When I first found your NL army blog a couple of years ago, I was so hoping you'd go for a full army... Now it might actually happen.... If you have any original Gothic Night Lords left))))

Top notch as always mate... don't stop!!!!!!

Overall I must admit I'm not a fan of these resin bases. In person they look a lot bigger for some reason so I may have to add some detailing to them to break them up a little and stop the marines getting lost in the bases.

Why Doghouse, WHY??!!! Too many favourites to choose from! Your original NL is my ultimate fav but geez... you new NL in seriously pushing towards no.1 but the apothacary..... total awesomeness :cuss . Oh & also the heavy bolter guy is also bad ass looking. Don't ask me why but when I look at him, I get the impression you were watching Aliens???? Got that Drake look about him (Drake with a helmet on if you please :) )

Cheers guys! :)

Just got to get them looking like a proper squad now and a little less hotch potch. :)

Dorns Padawan: Wait till you see what I have planned for the First Claw mate. ;)

I have a picture of them now courtesy of Nephren-ka and will be including them as an allied unit (probably Chosen as the are existing BL characters) rather than a proper part of the army as such. Started work on them and will get some shots up as soon as I have something decent to show. ;)

I think the art that I'd be basing them on might have been done on a commission for AD-B if I'm remembering right so I'll track the guy down and ask either of their permission to make them first before I get too far into it.

In the meantime I'm going to get these guys base coated and crack on with the paint job.

Awesome looking group shot there Doghouse. I love it when you crank out the models and pics on a regular basis like this. I would like to see you use the old chaos marine heavy bolter with the chain sling for the First Claw marine armed with heavy bolter (I can't think of his name right now.) Consider it a special request for you to consider it. I also agree that the bases might need a little something to make them more unique to each marine, they are a little plain and spartan for my taste. I also meant what I said earlier about donating parts for this project. Pm me if you are interested, I have a few bitz in mind that you might find useful. Edited by mikhail

Cheers mate, if I come across any bits that I need I'll definitely give you a shout. I do have one of the heavy bolters so see what I can do mate, I think I'll have to try and read the novels to see what they are all about and get some descriptions. ^_^

Bit more of an update.

Just working on the armour at the moment to make it look like it's made of bits from various sources. Hopefully the Mk V heads should be arriving soon, got the plastic Mk IV heads to day so am going to put together nine Mk IV guys for the twenty man mega squad.

Thanks mate! :)

No he was definitely pointing at you... :)

The production line has begun. Here are the first sixteen waiting to get underway, I've added the plasticard to the bottom of the feet and am now going go back and trim them up before gluing them to their bases.

As I'm going for a heresy sort of look it'll mostly be Mk IV and Mk V looking armour with some custom and chaos parts thrown in for good measure. As this twenty man unit is the main warband I'm thinking it'll mostly be Word Bearers but I will be chucking in some Emperor's Children now that I have the cool plastic Mk IV lids and a couple of the other legions as well.

Figured I may as well show these warts and all as it might be of some use use to some people who are looking into truescaling. Normally I use a mix of techniques from sculpting the torso to scratch to using terminator parts but for these guys I'm sculpting over old torso to make it easier to attach the heads and back packs.

Now that I've stuck the legs on the bases after trimming the excess plasticard off I've stuck a regular torso on the ball joint where they connect to the terminator torso.

Truth is that for this process it doesn't matter which torso you use as long as it has the collar on the back and the neck socket for the head. Ideally if you are going to make these it's better to trim the shields off the tops of the legs first along with the belt buckle on the legs but I tend to work on the fly.

As you can see I'm using the really nice FW Mk IV heads and the first of my plastic Mk IV heads to create a real mish mash heresy armour feel.

The Maximus helm is my absolute fav of all time!!! Not a huge fan of the newer FW version espite owning quite a few myuself. I have 4 of the ones your middle guy has & am saving them up for when I become a Sensei at true scaling!!

Doghouse, a question regarding the leg shields. Your answer will probably be each to their own but: Why do you cut them off? I leave mine on purely because I like the idea that they can be used for mag-locking weapons & ammo to. What is the reason that you trim them off for?

Also - how deep do you fill the chest with GS? I appreciate it is all practice with trial & error but I am down to my last 'fag end' of GS. I have tried experimenting with it & know it is all about practice but wonder if I am not doing something quite right? I have got the backs of the legs off to a T now as I could never ever get them to look symetrical so what I do is to roll up little snot ball sized balls of GS & add them in that way to the backs of the legs. Still not 100% but much better than my first attempts. I do find your tutorial very helpful :P

Very pleased with what I see. Lots of TS on a grand scale!!!! Seriouly can't wait for your version of First Claw!!!! Do you read any BL novels Doghouse?

I think that I like the plastic Mk IVs mainly because they look more like the original models. The new FW are very nice but don't quite look the same to me.

I cut the shield off mainly so that it looks more like a regular marine. I have left them on in the past but find it easier to sculpt the entire top of the leg rather than work around them.

I don't really cover the torso with that much GS to be honest. With this style of sculpting over old torsos that I'm doing here I place a sausage of gs around the abdomen them spread it out flat all around the waist.

I then add a sausage of GS to mark out the lower edge of the breastplate then flatten that out to give me an edge then work upwards.

The key to the legs is to use the struts that are on the back of the leg as a guide and fill in between them. It is very much a case of what ever works best for you at the end of the day, I pretty much do the same thing as what it sounds like you're doing and adding little bits at a time then blend it in and smooth it over.

Taking a slightly different approach with this first guy. Normally I just build up the sides of the torso using GS but this time decided to experiment a little. What I've done is add a small plastic base cut off an old epic mini to each side of the torso before I started the main sculpting. The idea is that GS doesn't bear stress very well when you super glue stuff to it as it tears so you have to pin the arms to get the strength that you need. By adding the plastic discs I can the regular arms to them and have a much stronger bound. It also serves as a guide so that all the marine torsos will be uniformly the same width.

Little bit of an update.

Nearly finished the basics for the first of the new guys. Normally I like the idea of each marine being a hero in his own right but I may go for more of a generic henchman approach for the rest of these guys to make the characters stand out a little.

Now the basics are in place I can get started on chaosifying him a little more.

Started to add a few bits of Necron parts to the base of the DW guys to break it up a little.

And lastly just because it's cool... (my money is on the Word Bearer...he's a bit mental...)

If he had a helmet maybe. Your speed is really something to behold in addition to the models. That one marine on the to the right of the marine with the mark V helmet is so cool. Nice sharp edges on the breastplate, Gs is smooth. I'm certain in five minutes you will be finished so I'll be back to this thread soon. Great work those two squads are characterful and coming along nicely.

Thanks mate! :)

Yeah I seem to be getting through these guys at quite a pace at the moment. ;)

Hopefully I'll be getting some gaming in with these guys as there is talk of a group taking shape down in Winchester which will mean regular gaming again so it's giving me a bit of an incentive to keep going at the moment.

Just base coated this new guy that I'm working on and will begin painting him this afternoon with any luck. Not sure if I should go for the red armour of the word bearers or the grey at the moment but am thinking that a mix of the two armour colours among members of the unit should look pretty good and stop me getting bored.

I've also just based the night lord so with a little bit of tidying up and some more detailing he should be ready for painting this afternoon with any luck.

Yeah I'm really looking forward to getting started on him, should be lots of gore involved for sure. ;)

The first test trooper is coming together nicely at the moment. Still got loads of work to do on him in terms of blending and weathering but he's looking ok so far.

I'm going for a sort of improvised mix of Mk IV and V bits with some custom bits thrown in. You can't really see it here but the left thigh plate for example is Mk II.
