Summoners + Truescale Death Watch Marines

Yeh i got the whole teacher vibe from you long back, but my point still stands - why not make the poses more life like with realistic firing positions, you after all said that you wanted the marines to feel more "mariney" and intimidating so why keep making them in awkward stances? Edited by Pulse

Great models, nice bit of fluff too. I'm sorry but seeing the name of the Templar I can't help it: "See you at the party Richter!"

Looking forward to seeing the squad painted :D

Cheers guys! :)

Pulse: I know where you are coming from mate but like I say I just always end up trying to push it that little bit further when I try something like that. I'll probably get around to something like that at some point but for these first ten guys I'm going to keep it simple. :)

Reyner: Never thought of that! :D

Little Lost Swordsman: I'm not aware of any but I'll probably knock up a tutorial at some stage when I start mucking about making videos again.

NightHunters: Hopefully it won't come to that. :D

Here's the progress on the first five models so far, the goal is to get them done by the weekend so they're ready for painting next week.

Here's Harkon minus "Freya", I've just started the detailing on the tooth necklace and will clean that up next.

Although there aren't rules for them in squads it makes some sense to me that a DW squad operating on it's own would include an apothecary. I'm toying around with making this guy into a Dark Angel at the moment but may go with another chapter depending on how it works out.

Its not hard to focus on one task at a time you know. Legs legs LEGSSSS! :P

Looking awesome, looking forward to seeing more on the Apothecary in particular. Are you going to making him stand out from the crowd with a different colour helmet as in most chapters or keeping him dulled down?

I'm not sure yet. I may just keep him in traditional DW colours so that on closer inspection you see he's an apothecary rather than the blatant white of office kind of thing.

I can maybe see him playing a duel role of field medic and xeno-biologist given the nature of how the squads work.

Bit more done on the SW.

Came across one of my original DW squad members from back when the pads first came out. I was hoping to find the original SW guy that Harkon is the new version of but could only find this Ultramarine.

I think that would work very well, the idea of the xeno-biologist is pretty sweet!

Yeah the way I see it if you are a DW team operating without the support of an Ordo Xenos Inquisitor that may have such specialists in his retinue you are going to want to have someone that knows his stuff.

A medic that has atleast some basic understanding of xeno anatomy would be vital in identifying new threats and determining the best way of purging them. Then you have the likes of the genestealer hybrids that aren't entirely human or their infected human cultists where such knowledge is going to be tactically vital. It's probably more of a case of finding the best means of purging the xenos scum rather than anything truly academic though.

I would think thats about right, is it something you made up or do the DW have that sort of thing? I don't know much about the DW other than what is in their IA.

Something that I'm just making up for the squad. The only stuff I have to go on is what I know from the IA article and the old Inquisitor RPG game. There is a new Death Watch rpg game that probably goes into greater detail but I'm just winging it with what I know. I think there were some DW novels as well?

Beauty of DW is that it is made up of members of lots of different chapters so you can really go to town on individual details and back stories to create plausible model conversions. So just because this squad has a medic/specialist it doesn't mean that the second squad that I want to make will which makes him stand out as a character.

The bit I'm most looking forward to though is the Cantor proxy that'll allow me to use these as sternguard troops. I was toying around with SW rules but the bolter ammo is probably more iconic to be fair than their counter attack rule.

The space wolves codex would give me greater freedom of individual weapons options though and fits the heroic smaller elite force ideal better, plus I could have a dreadnought leading them! :P

Thanks mate.

Yeah he still needs a little cleaning up but he's getting there.

Here's the first five as they stand now. I should have these finished by tomorrow with any luck and will start painting them on sunday.

Here is the xeno-biologist/apothecary that I'm working on. I'm currently leaning towards doing this guy as a member of the Death Spectres mainly because of their extensive work beyond the boundaries of the Imperium in the Ghoul Stars. It sort of makes some sense that these guys are going to have had more contact with exotic aliens than most so would be ideal in this sort of specialist role. I'm using the techmarine head to give him a more technical feel, the Salamander is most likely going to be the closest thing that the squad has to an actual techmarine though.

Really nice work, that head is perfect for the Apothecary! Will he have all the belt vials, etc added? Also, liking the HB guy, has he been assigned a Chapter yet? I'd probably go ImpFists (or something Dorn).

Edit: Never mind, just reread back through the thread again, the HB guy is Demetri the IF? Cool.

Thanks mate! :P

Yeah the Heavy Bolter guy is going to be Demetri. A lot of people mentioned that should be an IF for some reason and I have to agree as it does seem right. I've got a few of the GK terminator apothecary vials that I'll be adding to the belt of the apothecary guy and I may chuck a servo skull in there as well. This'll depend on how sturdy it is attached though as they will probably get handled quite a bit at GD.

Just a quickish update

Got a little impatient and base coated Richter as I wanted to see what he'd look like.

I'm currently cutting out the templates of the Land Raider right now as a change of pace so I'll get the shots of that up once it's built. Here's the mock up version made of MDF. As you can see it's quite a beast.

Here's a quick update

Starting to clean up Harkon a little more and am starting to get the basics of the Death Spectre guy together now.

Started to block out the base colours on Richter, I think he's going to look really nice when finished.

i think one of those things that keeps my warhammer life tied together is the hope of another doghouse project threat. With this one, my warhammer life will last a bit longer than expected!

great job as usual, as a precursor of true scaling as you are, your models are paramount.

I have always toyed with the idea of making a true-scale deathwatch kill team for myself, not having the force of will to convert a full army, i think that a 10 man squad is an "ok" project, and there is no more iconic 10 man squad that a deathwatch.

I love your true-scale, that is obviously out of the question. I think i am not legitimated to make any critics on your work as your skills are like 20 times better than my skills wil ever be, so i think that the only think i am able to comment is the squad composition...

I have always picture in my mind a deathwatch 10 man team formed the following way:

1 Captain/Sargent

3 Shotty guys

3 Close Combat guys

3 Specialists, mostly 1 apothecary, 1 Techmarine 1 librarian. This last 3 guys can be added into the CC and shooty guys if you dont feel like adding them

The Cpt/Srgt is an Ultramarine. I play Ultras, this is the main reason, but also, they are the most balanced, charismatic, and posses the greatest tactical expertise. They are born leaders or at least, that is how they picture them

the shooties, an imperial fist, because yellow rocks, maybe a Salamander, because you can add all those promethean cult things to his armor to make him unique amongst all the others and the 3rd one, maybe belonging to a late fundation chapter or a DiY

the CC fellas, a wolf is a must, as is a templar, both for their CC characteristics as, once again, for the model and personalization possibilities. The thrd one, as before, a late-fundation or a DiY

The techmarine, an iron hand, and no clue on the apot. and the libby... not sure even if they should be there, but i guess that when you are just 10 guys facing, for instance, a hive mothership, they could come handy...

That is, of course, just my oppinion...

Btw, Give that wolf an axe :cuss!!! xDD

Well if your warhammer life is hanging in the balance then I'd better get this finished! ;)

The trick to GS stuff is to keep practicing and keep making stuff. My first minis I tried sculpting were god awful to be honest but I persevered and am now getting to a stage where I'm a bit happier with the direction that I'm heading. There are loads of tutorials online that are really helpful but I've found the most enjoyable aspect of sculpting is figuring out new stuff on my own. There are things that I worry about sculpting like hands and faces but through practice I am getting there, basically you just got to keep at it and you'll get there. :)

I reckon it'll be another couple of years before I get to the stage that I'm happy with my stuff but with a few small companies having expressed an interest in my non-40k models I'm hopefully on the right track. :)

Totally agree with you on the squad composition. What I'm hoping to do is to use the regular marine codex and create a proxy cantor as the dw captain and have him lead two squads of sternguard and a vanguard squad to begin with. I definitely want a couple of the new contemptor dreadnoughts as well, while not truescale they should look about the right size with any luck and save me having to scratch build my own.

Ideally I'd like to use the sw coedx but that'd be purely so that I could have a dreadnought leading a bunch of marines! :P

I petition you paint up a Star Lord for your squad. ;)

Seriously loving that Apothecary and the idea of him being a Death Spectre is pretty good, although from IA9/10 it seems more than a few chapters have gone outside the boundries of the Astronomican.
