BFG Space Marines

A SM fleet is expensive in both points and money as all units are specialty and metal. Also, a SM list, while having some advantages such as T-hawk ordinance, a 6+ save on all cruisers and BB's and bombardment cannons they are expensive in terms of points so you'll be outnumbered most of the time.

The segmentum solar list allows for an Imperial fleet with SM support so this would be my choice if you are set on getting some marines. Imp cruisers come 2 in a box and are plastic so are cheap. Imp fleets are also designed for fleet actions unlike SM's which are suited for planetary assault and so lack in ship to ship combat.

A SM fleet is viable ( I have a 1500pt fleet myself) but they require more finesse and skill than an Imp fleet.

As for the easiest fleet to enter into I would recommended a chaos fleet. Their ships can be used individually with good results so you won't have to crash learn fleet tactics like Imp's will to win. Chaos also are plastic in terms of cruisers so it's also a cheaper option.

Best of luck whichever way you go! It's the best game GW has ever put out.

Short answer, no, Marines would be a fairly terrible starter fleet for BFG. Start with IN or Chaos. Marines are slightly underpowered and rely on light cruisers or escorts for the bulk of their capabilities which makes them pretty susceptible to lances. In terms of weapons they also take a hit since both their primary shipboard weapons use the gunnery table and their strike cruisers don't have a whole lot of firepower to begin with. That forces you to squadron to avoid BM penalties and hurts you more when you brace.

All that adds up two a couple of options for them. Going mostly SC with escorts for filler or taking as many BB as possible with escorts for filler.
