Am I allowed in here?

Hello, I'm new. And I'm afraid I'm a fluffer pure and simple, assuming Dawn of War doesn't count (and I suspect it doesn't). I'm sure it's bizarre in this august company that I have never once played the tabletop game, so first things first - is there room here for the likes of me?

Further troubles: I am in some moral difficulty. I may be guilty of some horrible form of disloyalty; I put myself before you for adjudication.

Many years ago I saw a game on my cousin's Amstrad CPC464 (yes, I know) called "Space Hulk", which featured people with exciting names like Ultramarines and Blood Angels. I rather enjoyed the game and the tiny taste of 40K it offered, but then drifted away from His service. A long time later, thankfully, salvation came; with a website here, and a novel there, I gradually came back into the fold bit by bit, until I found I was really quite obsessed with the fluff. I now devour as many 40K and Heresy books as I can get my hands on, haunt sites like this (brilliant) one, play Dawn of War poorly but keenly, and generally walk in the light of the Golden Throne. My better half is quite despairing, believing I am too old for this, but I suspect she is in thrall to the Ruinous Powers and may have to be dealt with before long. Indeed, her face was a picture when - whilst out for a walk on Christmas day just passed - I gave an audible whoop of delight upon seeing a 40K banner outside a shop in a miniscule place called Grimstage (which is an excellent 40K name in itself, come to think of it!). Seriously, Google it - there is no town or even village there, it is just an old manor house now made into a tiny shopping centre, and a scattering of houses; that's it. And yet, His light illuminates even the smallest corners; there it was, the Aquila. I was thrilled!

My difficulty is as follows. After reading and absorbing much, I was drawn to the ferocity of the Black Templars. I was always going to be; there is some small dark part of me that is drawn to, and fascinated by, fanaticism. That is surely a large part of why I love 40K so much. Anyway, they became "my" chapter, the ones I mentally associated myself with. But then I began to play Dawn of War, and I found myself being entirely un-Templarish. I almost always begin by putting squads on every single possible approach to my base, with orders not to move out; and I build as many heavy bolter sentry turrets and minefields along each approach as possible (more than once, I have actually walled myself in and found my dreadnoughts unable to leave base!). And basically I don't move an inch until I am at full strength, maxed out on units, and ready to go in massive force. There's only one conclusion here; I may have thought I was a Black Templar, but I'm not. I'm an Imperial Fist.

Every instinct, every inclination makes me build and build and build until I have a rock-solid "wall" around my base, and not a ceramite-booted toe is put forward until I am ready to overwhelm the filthy enemies of His Sacred Majesty. It just feels right to do this. But it feels so wrong after such a long time imagining myself as a Black Templar. Where they would charge out howling defiance against stupefying odds, I want to take three dreadnoughts and a couple of heavy-bolter squads to every tiny enemy patrol. So I ask - is it forgivable, in 40K's world of absolutes and stark loyalties, to switch in this fashion? Or have I transgressed against the honour of TWO of chapters of His chosen?

May the blessings of the Eternal Emperor fall upon us.

Welcome to the B+C kged.

There is no transgression. Each person must find their own chapter and it takes time to do so. I was a Salamander for years before the Black Rage of the Children of Sanguinius took me.

Be proud as a Son of Dorn.

Well, although you don't collect, paint and game, You're still a Marine at heart, that's a good start. And you're lucky that you at least chose two chapters from the same Primarch (Dorn) so at least you're still a Son of Dorn. I've been around the palette of possibilities in this universe. I started with Tau, luckily I changed to the Blood Angels and His light, then it was Iron Warriors, Blood Angels again, and then a Black Crusade of each Legion, where I only managed a weak alliance with the legions, I fell back to the Iron Warriors, and now the Raven Guard and to a part the Inquisition (Ordo Xenos). In other Words, I am a Prime example of the change people go through. I think that you'll find that this Forum is more than "Look! I've thrown a bit of paint on this!". I'd suggest you take a look around. We have a subforum for fluff (I think you'll find it good :P ), subforums for the different chapters, both loyalist and traitor, a forum for painting and even for DoW (Other games I believe it's called). So with that, welcome to the BnC, I think you'll feel welcome here.

I should hope there is, or I'm out on my ear as well. :cuss

Thas was good reading, welcome on board

I'm not a BT myself... but a DA. And I don't think you betray the BT concept. They are marines after all and are able to think a bit beyond the "enemy, go for theeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeem".

Also, if you fish a bit around for fluff, you will see that Dorn was quite a Siegemaster (unless I'm mistaked), so problem in bunkering up :D

However, you better go out for all of them once your house is built!

As for your wife... it would only be understandable if she falls for Slaanesh ;)

Have no fear. I switch between armies constantly. After yesterdays painting session, I now have 15 marines painted the same color. The rest are painted many, many different colors. I've played almost all the armies GW produces with the exception of Necrons, Daemons, Blood Angels, and Witchhunters in the five years I've been in the hobby. Yes, I switch a lot. It's very beneficial to your gaming ability, as you can understand the strengths and weaknesses of the enemy, as well as know what each model does, which helps the game go a lot faster.

Excellent writing! I enjoyed reading it greatly.

A Rainbow chapter!

Thank you for those kind welcomes, brothers - I think I'm going to like it here.

To settle the domestic issue, I think I can recommend my good lady to the missionaries of the Ecclesiarchy, rather than the Inquisition; rather than committing outright heresy, she simply hasn't yet found the way to His light. I remain hopeful.

As for my own conflicted loyalties about which Chapter to follow, I have (brilliantly) found a solution - Deathwatch avatar! Thus I avoid slighting any single Chapter. And I really do think I should avoid slighting Black Templars if at all possible, as I have been diagnosed as allergic to chainsword-in-the-gut.
