Hmm...what do we have here?

Why those look like Ultramarine scouts...with a pulse carbine and markerlight armed sergeant and, oh ho ho, a pulse rifle armed trooper. My, my, it looks like they also have EMP grenades. Wouldn't that make for a nasty combination in a scout squad. :)

While fiddling around yesterday I read the Ultramarine section again and had wonderful visions of pulse rifle armed infantry, flying rhinos, razorbacks, and predators. Then I started thinking about operationally, how would the UM play differently.

Since the UM have a very efficient, integrated society, it seems like with well coordinated and structured armies, the UM could become more mobile, heavier hitters, than they currently are. So, one thing that would make for an interesting unit in any list is Scouts armed with more powerful pulse weaponry, able to effectively use Markerlight technology, and should it become necessary, with EMP grenades, feel more confident in assaulting armor.

Anyway, this is what first came to mind as an interesting change to the codex forces. Not too overpowering, in that these seem like simple technology adaptations, but certainly a bit stronger and more flexible than current scouts.

So, I think that's it for today. Also since my vacation is up after today, updates are more than likely to be not as frequent. But it was fun while it lasted.

Cheers,

Gah, I usually hate Ultramarines but their Dornian Heresy counterparts are sooooooooo temptingly awesome with their Mk16 Damocles Armor and now pulse rifle armed scouts? Must... Resist... Urge...

Oh Honda, just a suggestion for Tau-ing up your scouts a bit more, try giving them Fire Warrior backpacks and helmets (why carry night-vision goggles when you can have them built into your helmet?).

Oh that is just great! :P Thanks for pointing me in the direction of this thread, Honda. I am particularly impressed by the haggard look of the Iron Hand - the flesh really is weak, it seems, and certainly looks to be ready for replacement with strong and incorruptable metal. ;)

And Pulse rifle scouts as well? What's not to like there? B)

I did get a variety of models that are set to become 'Dornian Heresied' (heresified?) when I get any time to paint, such as the Iron Warrior Shadowsword and a trio of Emperor's Children jetbikes, and it is great to see the other legions making it onto the battlefield as well. :)

Howdy.

SO the termie. Love the body & Shoulder pads. I'm not so much diggin' the head though. I think it is mostly because of the angle I see it i in the picture. It looks ver tau-ish to me and not fitting the IH NEcron theme. But I'm such a fluff fanatic that it must fit perfectly or it is an utter epic failure. :(

I like the IH symbol on the chest though, that is a very nice touch.

I do like the Necron Chest plate on the PA trooper and I am a big fan of the guass bolter.

My only suggestion so far woul dbe to try in include more Necron looking tech in the marines, like the chest plate, and limit the amount of imperial looking tech that shows. I think the easy explanation is to get them to look move more towards Gen. Grievous and less towards a stormtrooper. Remove and simplify. :P

Ok, time for an in progress shot. I'm testing out "blues" for the UM and I rather like the dull blue-ish grey from VMC, but still looking at it.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/DSCN8930.jpg

My goodness, that looks like the new Stalker IFV, armed with an autocannon and seeker missiles...and oh my, it skims. :)

What head did you use for the Terminator sergeant?

A <wait for it> Sergeant's head with all the meat...uh, filed off, then I put an IG Heavy weapons sight on it, then a little piece of plastic rod on the side for a little asymmetry.

I got some more Nec bits, so I'll be working up some more of that squad while I fiddle with the UM's a little more.

Cheers,

Interlude

Dorn slowly circled the manacled Astartes.

Stoic, standing proud as only an Imperial Fist can, a thin sheen of sweat could be seen upon his brow in response to the continuing scrutiny by his Primarch.

“Is the command structure within my chapter…lacking in clarity or perhaps insufficient for command and control in your estimation?”

“N-no my Lord, never!”

Dorn hissed, “Yet you still feel the need to fraternize within the confines of this, this lodge structure that I hear about. Why is that?”

“My Lord, the purpose of the lodge is only to facilitate a, a different kind of communica-“

“SILENCE TRAITOR! My chapter will not be subverted by this insidious practice. SIGISMUND! Begin a search of the barracks areas immediately. Anyone in possession of one of these, these lodge stones is to be taken into custody. If anyone resists, then terminate them immediately.

Sigismund replied, “Yes my Lord Dorn. What of him?”, tilting his head toward the slumped figure.

“Call an Apothecarion to extract his geneseed. He doesn’t deserve his.”

So...I gots me some double dump truck loads of flu bug starting last Wednesday. I have not had my butt kicked like that in a very long time. I finally got to the ER yesterday and they were at least able to confirm that I didn't have any pneumonia like in 2007 when I was kicking off my Apocalypse Lords army build.

For those who have been down the pneumonia lane, last Thursday I thought I was going to die, whereas when you have pneumonia, you just wish you were dead. A subtle difference I know. Let's just say I have a better understanding of the french word "le miserable".

In the mean time, whilst floating along in a delirious fog, I've been mentally designing helmets for IH and will get started on those soon. Also, I've darkened the armor of the UM Scouts and it's better than it was I think, but I'm not that convinced that its working yet, so I'll touch on that a little more before I post any pics.

Anyway, it's been quite a thrill the past couple of days and I still feel like I was tied up to a tree and worked over by baseball bats.

So still here and working hard on learning to breath again.

Cheers,

Well, it has been a little while...when we last left our intrepid warrior, he was struggling with 104+ temps and severe dehydration. Just to show that it can always get worse, I got a free upgrade to bacterial pneumonia.

Yeah, it's been real.

However, the Emperor protects his faithful servants and despite the disappointment from the Nurgle crowd (how do they get all that crap into your body anyway?), I am on the mend. Supposedly, by next Tuesday I can do something besides walk with old people. :D

Anyway, between jitters and such, I've continued on with things.

Here are the UM Scouts, which I'm rather annoyed with. They just don't look right to me. The Blue is close, but...anyway, I got frustrated with them and decided to stop here. I still need to do the drybrush on the painted sand, but for the time being, they are as they are:

I may like them later.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Dornian%20Heresy/DSCN9008.jpg

I know, you're probably wondering what in the world is this. I'm one of those people who see things (not dead people) and think, I could probably use that for something someday. I think it drives my wife nuts, but she never really says anything about it...though sometimes she'll see me staring at something and say, "Is that one of those things?"

Anyway, we had a broasted chicken in the house and it comes in a container. I kind of looked at the container and thought..."Hmm, that's kind of a cool hexagonal shape, plus some of the others...I think I could put some green stuff or something in them and make weird looking tiles for my DH Iron Hand bases."

Yeah, I'm a lot of fun to live with. Not only that, but with four very bright children there's no telling where this "gift" will lead.

Anyway, if you see some interesting hexagonal thingies on some bases in the near future, you'll know where they came from.

Now since I'm still very interested in continuing with the Iron Hands, I decided to do the full monty on them and build out an entire squad of 10. So here's some in progress shots.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Dornian%20Heresy/DSCN9025.jpg

He's going to get a bionic leg and some real shoulder pads

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Dornian%20Heresy/DSCN9027.jpg

An objective that will be part of the recovery operations of DH Iron Hands

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Dornian%20Heresy/DSCN9017.jpg

And finally a confession. I've been on this forum for many a long year. I'd done a fair share of my own chapter, a few odds and ends, pretty much whatever I've wanted. <takes deep breath> Ok, ok, I can get through this...I...can't...stand...Mk VI...helmets. There I said it. I've always felt they were goofy looking. I refuse to put them in my chapter and I was so thankful when FW came out with all the Mk II, III, and IV kits because I just couldn't see putting those pointy little crappy looking helmets.

Until the other day. I had this one beaky helmet and I was wondering what to do about it and I just started...I don't know, shaving bits off...and then I remembered one of the old WD covers where I think they had these on the cover. BAM! Epiphany strikes and I'm all lovey dovey on Mk VI's all of a sudden...as long as they look like this:

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Dornian%20Heresy/DSCN9023.jpg

I don't know. I guess it's the sloping down on the nose that finally looks right to me. Anyway, now me and Mk VI are buds forever. Also I see that I missed a mold line, so I'll get on that.

Remember kids, don't ever let anyone tell you that little bits of plastic can't be therapeutic.

Anyway, the madness continues....

C&C greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Rejoice! Our brother Honda has returned to us, purified of the foul Plague God's taint! (That said, some Nurgle Blood Angels would be awesome...) Welcome back to our racks brother, it has been too long.

But I don't think the vast majority of us have a boobs... although I wouldn't mind being welcomed by some... ;)

Welcome back to our racks brother, it has been too long.

I guess I wasn't the only one who thought we were getting a little too friendly in this thread. :P

I've made some additional progress and decided on how the back packs are going to look. I'll target mid-week for an update. I'd like to get these guys basecoated so I can get some paint on them.

Uh, right...what week was that update coming again?

Ahem, so back again with the construction complete. Lungs still on the mend a bit, mostly causing me to avoid cold air which we are still getting a bit of down here.

Anyway, here's the squad

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Dornian%20Heresy/DSCN9037.jpg

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Dornian%20Heresy/DSCN9038.jpg

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Dornian%20Heresy/DSCN9039.jpg

I decided to add a little marine necrony badge thingie to the left side of some to add a little more color to the guys

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Dornian%20Heresy/DSCN9042.jpg

And of course, my favorite (not), Epic Bionic Leg Fail Guy

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Dornian%20Heresy/DSCN9041.jpg

Yeah, bionics. Learned a lot trying to build that leg. Mostly that the people who make it look so simple make me nauseous. However, one big trick I think I learned out of this character building experience is to build the bionic bit first and fit it to the figure, not the other way around.

Seems obvious now, but low oxygen levels, meds, and lack of sleep convinced me otherwise. I also know better because I have built some bionics before, but for some reason I had to fail all over again to really get the lesson. I think the paint will perhaps grant me some mercy.

I've also changed how the troopers hold the gauss blaster, greatly expediting some of the conversion work. On the first guy...

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Dornian%20Heresy/DSCN8697.jpg

...you'll note that he's holding the ray gun in a very similar fashion to how the Necron warriors hold their weapons. This relatively trivial piece of information, from a modeling technique is a pain in the left hind fetlock. So, I have cut the end of blaster off, still have to shave the warrior hand off because they are smaller than a SM (Necrons = dainty...gotta think about that), which then fits quite nicely into the left hand without modification. Going forward, all the troopers will be holding the ray gun in this manner.

You can also see the new back pack design for the troopers. At the end of the day, I wanted to do something that looked...different, could be duplicated 30 or 40 times if I had to and yet is still obviously something that resembles, even if vaguely, a power pack. I'm kind of thinking right now that the plastic rod dealies may glow to further weird out the figure.

So, these guys will be off to be base coated and I'll work up some paint here shortly.

Also...

Mmmm....bits....

Oh how I missed this thread, Honda my brother, will you be updating your DH Iron Hands now that the Necrons have been re-released? I think an assault squad of Morlock Terminators with Hyperphase Swords and Dispersion Shields/Rods of Covenant would look pretty sweet, perhaps a Vidicator with Doomsday Cannon? Vanguard Veterans armed with Warscythes, tactical Terminators with Voidblades and Particle Casters (Gauss Blasters & Tesla Carbines replacing Assault Cannons

& Heavy Flamers respectively). Razorbacks mounting Telsa Destructors and Scout Squads equipped with Deathmarks Synaptic Disintegrators.
