Evening Brothers,

I wrote this article for a blog, and thought i would share it with you - Hopefully to get some good feedback! Enjoy!

With only 1000 points to spend, you are going to be seriously restricted on what you can choose in you force. Now... There are much better players out there than me, and I'm sure most of you will be able to pick my army to bits! The point behind this is to try and build some Balanced lists!

So what to choose? First off let's look at a HQ choice...

HQ

I think in 1000 points, there are only two choices: a WGBL or a rune priest. However, for his price and shooting attacks, the Rune Priest is always the clear winner for me.

Elite

With 1000 points, you are going to have to skimp somewhere… But should it be in your elites choice? Now, I’m a huge fan of Wolf Scouts, but in small games like this, I think they are wasted. They wont have any staying power, and you are less likely to encounter any serious tanks for them to melta on turn two from behind! Although expensive, Wolf Guard are you best bet here.

Troops

My money is on the troop choices. As you are all aware (or should be by now), Grey Hunters are probably the best troop choice in the entire game. And its for a reason. They are tactical marines with an extra close combat weapon, and Counter Attack to boot. Fair enough you cant take a heavy weapon… but that’s why long fangs are som damn good!

Blood claws are always worth considering. Love or hate them, they have their own place in Army Lists. Personally, with small games I always go with the Grey Hunters. I cant afford to be buying a Wolf priest to lead the Blood Claws.

Heavy Support

Two words here… LONG FANGS!!! It really is that simple, I couldn’t live without my long fangs in any game, no matter what the size. The only thing to consider here is how to equip them. Missile Launchers are always a good bet, and if you know who you are playing you can tailor your choice for them.

Fast Attack

In a small game such as this, there isn’t much choice here, although I would be inclined to try a landspeeder or two! Swift Claws are always fun, but in my mind, too expensive for 1000pt games. One other unit worth mentioning is the Fenrisian Wolves. I understand they aren’t particularly popular amongst players, but against a lightly armoured opponent they are magic! 8 points for what is essentially a grey hunter without power armour? Yes please!

Ok so after all the deliberation, I came up with the following two lists. As always, I’m open to comments – it’s half the fun after all!

List One – Geared towards Dark Eldar (Im playing them on Friday!)

HQ

Rune Priest : 125pts

Power Armour, Chooser of the Slain, Wolf Tail Talisman, Wolf Tooth Necklace.

Elite

Wolf Guard Pack : 129pts

3 Wolf Guard in Power Armour, Combi Melta’s and Frost Blades.

Troops

Grey Hunters Pack : 170pts

7 GH, Mark of the Wulfen, Wolf Standard, Melta, Rhino.

Grey Hunters Pack : 135pts

6 GH, Wolf Standard, Flamer, Rhino.

Heavy Support

Long Fangs Pack : 200pts

Squad Leader, 3 x Heavy Bolter, 2 x Missile Launchers ,Razorback with TL Lascannon

Fast Attack

Land Speeder : 70pts

Heavy Bolter, Multi Melta.

Total 999

List Two

Ok, this list is designed to be as competitive as possible, instead of just for fun like the previous list! It’s Mainly Just a tweak though to the previous though.

HQ

Rune Priest : 125pts

Power Armour, Chooser of the Slain, Wolf Tail Talisman, Wolf Tooth Necklace.

Elite

Wolf Guard Pack : 129pts

3 Wolf Guard in Power Armour, Combi Melta’s and Power Fists.

Troops

Grey Hunters Pack : 200pts

9 GH, Mark of the Wulfen, Wolf Standard, Melta, Rhino.

Grey Hunters Pack : 200pts

9 GH, Mark of the Wulfen, Wolf Standard, Melta, Rhino.

Grey Hunters Pack : 200pts

9 GH, Mark of the Wulfen, Wolf Standard, Melta, Rhino.

Heavy Support

Long Fangs Pack : 140pts

Squad Leader, 5 x Missile Launchers

Total : 994

Not much difference here, apart from the Grey Hunters are a little bit more versatile with 9 squad members (10 when the Wolf Guard Join them).

The premise for both these Forces is to get to the Enemy Quickly, under the covering fire of the long fangs. Both armies are capable of sitting back and shooting if needs be (Russ forbid it!) and both forces are able to react quickly to threats on the flanks. I hope this has given you some insight in to what is worth trying for smaller games of 40k… smaller is sometimes more fun! Everything has to count in a small game, especially with the Space Wolves – nothing is cheap enough to throw away!

And now, as Monty Python once said, Time for something Completely Different…

HQ

Canis Wolfborn : 185pts

Troops

Fenrisian Wolf Pack : 120pts

15 Snarling Wolves!

Fenrisian Wolf Pack : 120pts

15 Snarling Wolves!

Fenrisian Wolf Pack : 120pts

15 Snarling Wolves!

Fast Attack

ThunderWolf Cavalry : 310pts

5 Thunderwolves, 1 with Thunder Hammer and Storm Shield.

Heavy Support

Long Fangs Pack : 140pts

Squad Leader, 5 x Missile Launchers

Total : 1000pts

Anyone fancy trying that out? Its certainly in character… whatever you do, don’t comment on this list telling me where its weak… I already know this! However, once I have enough Fenrisian Wolves im going to give this a go – I will let you know how that pans out!

Cheers

Alex

What themes are dominant in 1k battles? I mostly play 1.5k battles but looking at going back to basics and starting at 1k and fashioning a 1.5k list from there. I was playing around with list:

Rune Priest #1

- BP, RW, Living Lightning, Murderous Hurrice, Chooser of Saga of the BeastSlayer (not sure which yet)

Rune Priest #2

- BP, RW, Living Lightning, Tempest's Wrath

x2 Grey Hunter Packs

- Meltagun, Powerweapon, Mark of the Wulfen, Wolf Standard, Rhino with Hunter-killer Missle

x2 Long Fang Packs

- SGT, x3 Missle Launchers, x2 Lascannons

I believe I have a good amount of transport poppers and anti-med-armoured vehicles, which will double as decent anti-infantry as the game wears on. I wouldn't expect to go against AV14 but Lascannons are there and missle launchers might do enough to slow enemy advancement.

Squads are tooled out for close combat, designed for counter-attacking from objectives, however if the battle turns sour it may allow me to alter the original plan to develop a more offensive stance.

@Coverfire - That list looks interesting! Certainly an awful lot of firepower for 1000pts, and i can see it working nicely against the DE! Certainly an alternative i might have to playtest!

The only thing that bothers me about this list is the simple fact that you only have two units capable of taking objectives (and i would imagine these units would be too busy in hand to hand combat to actually do that) and that the GH packs are stuck with LD 8 (without WG leading them) unless you put the rune priest in with them. And i would prefer to have the Rune priests in with the Long Fangs so they can stay out of CC and keep using the nifty powers!

Still, i think i might give this a go - it certainly looks like it might be fun.

Cheers for you comments.

I will have the Rune Priest with the Grey Hunters so I can try to keep some heat off the Long Fangs. Otherwise my opponents ranged weapons will just hammer the LF's and Then I'll be left with nothing. If I separate the Rune Priests for the Long Fangs this will allow me to shoot other targets (such as troops disembarking from troop carriers) and give my opponent more to worry about.

That is the precise problem I saw with your list #2.- If I had first turn I could pummel your Long Fangs and then you would be forced to come to me with absolutely no covering fire or I could pop your transports and take out your fangs next turn as your troops would either be forced to hunker down and wait or run the gauntlet, and your Long Fangs target priority would be split 4 ways instead of just 2 ways.
