Starting a SW army, any tips?

Hello space wolf brothers!

I'm thinking of starting a space wolf army soon and would like to get some tips and ideas on some units.

For troops, are there any strong setups people like to use? I've seen some like blood claws with a wolf priest in a LRC and blood claws or grey hunters led by ragnar. Is there more?

For elites, how do you like to gear up your wolf guard? There's so many options, it's hard to decide. So some ideas would really help me :)

I also plan to run at least one pack of thunderwolves. When my friend used them agasint me, I didn't know they had fleet :D , and I got charged from 23" away... wasnt fun. ;)

Any and all tips are welcome. Thanks in advance!

About troops: Squad of Grey Hunters in a Rhino and led by a Wolf Guard is pretty much standard but sometimes WG is left out so you can take squad of 10 GHs and get that free special weapon. Melta is propably the most common choice for special weapon, but if that squad of 10 is taken then plasma gets pretty common too.

About Wolf Guards: Combi-melta and Power Fist if by far the most common set up if you going to use them as pack leaders. If not then Terminators become more common.

Before you ask:

About Scouts: There is alway melta unless you plan using sniper rifles.

About Long Fangs: They use missiles. A LOT!

I like 10 GHs personally, with a PF and 2 plasmaguns or a powerweapon and 2 meltaguns. I rarely run 2 flamers, in wich case they get a powerfist- keeps them well rounded. Totems are nice, and if I have the points Ill give them one. Top it off with a rhino or a drop pod depending if Im running mech or DPs. When I run footslogging each pack will have a Terminator to lead it- but thats less common by a good bit. A unit like this runs about 220pts give or take and is the backbone of every single SW list I run- they dont let you down.

I dont. Most games I leave the WG at home- they get expensive quickly, and theyre no more survivable than a GH. That being said when I do run them I have several packs I favor-

4xPW, 1xPF+C-M, in a Razorback. Makes a good bodygaurd for an HQ. If I have the points sometimes Ill switch out 2 PWs for a pair of Storm Shields to make them a lil tougher.

8xPW, 2xPF+C-M, in a Landraider. Takes up every spot, costs about 300pts, and hits like a ton of breaks. This is a line breaking unit, and its nice to mix it up compared to the BCs in a Landraider unit.

Terminators I like to take in mixed units these days- 2x LC and a CML is common, PF+SB or PW+C-weapon is too.

Thunderwolves can be fun, it just depends on what you want them to do. I like to use them to tie things up, so ive found that a pack of fenrisian wolves is just as good for the points against most foes. *shrugs* still, could be that my limits *I only have 2 models* keep me from seeing the true "must have" that some people seem to attach to these guys. Still, a very strong unit. I recommend atleast one storm shield in a unit, 2 if theres more than 3- from what Ive seen of others running them they need the extra survivability even if it is at a premium cost.

Other tips? Sure:

1 Scoring unit per 500pts, rounding up. Always. Without fail. If you do this youll never find yourself struggling to hold objectives, dealing with enemy troops or hordes, and your list will have one thing many elitists lack- depth. The ability to take a hit and keep coming is not to be under estimated. When in doubt, round up!

Rune Priests. Even if they didnt have some awesome psychic powers of their own the number of deadly powers out there builds with each new codex that comes out. The incredible psychic defenses you can get with this guy and wolf tail talismans is worth its weight in gold, and I rarely leave home without one.

Long Fangs- unless your going to be playing exclusively DP armies, and even then, youll be wanting a pack or two of these. Some people like 4 of a particular type- Missile launchers are a general favorite because of their strong versatility- I prefer 2xML and 2xLascannon *LC*, and usually backthem up with a razorback- either twin linked lascannons *TLLC* or Lascannon/Twinlinked Plasmagun *las/plas*. Runs about the same as a GH unit, also worth its weight in gold.

Landspeeder Typhoons- Fast, deadly, good antiarmor that can flank for side armor shots and switches to frags and heavy bolters to eat enemy hordes alive. For the bargain price of 90pts you can ask for much more.

DONT BUY RHINOS! Rhinos are a great transport, if you get them as part of a deal *like the SM Battleforce* then cool, but if your buying the box then pay the extra two bucks and get a razorback every time. Why? Because if your smart, and dont glue down the backplate, you can switch out the top for razorback or rhino as you see fit. Its nice to have that option.

I'm going to agree with the previous posters.

1.) I start every list with 2 packs of long fangs. I can't get enough of them. Missles are great, but I have been experimenting with las cannons lately.

2.) Grey Hunters are amazing in more ways than I can comprehend. Cheap, resilient, shooty, fighty, scoring, cool looking....
