New Deathwing Player

Hi All;

I've finally shaken off some of my painting apathy to start a project - Deathwing.

I was wondering if any of the Deathwing players could offer any advice or tips?

My primary motivation for the force is background driven. I play for enjoyment and tournements to me are an opportunity to meet new people and play interesting games - win or lose. I would use this force in a tournement setting (maybe for an upcoming doubles tournement - each player of the alliance has 1500pts to work with).

That being said I'd like to put up some fight.

Initial questions which come to mind are:

1) What is the ideal balance between Terminator Squads and support elements (Land Raiders/Dreads)

2) Which makes for a second HQ choice an Interrogator Chaplain or Librarian?

3) Would 1500pts be too small for 1) a second Hq and 2) 1-2 Land Raiders?

4) Which LR varient do you find more useful to the Deathwing? Right now I'm thinking Crusaders to help with enemy hordes and the larger capacity to carry a character.

I also have some spare models from my Blood Angels force-in-progress.

I've decided to funnel some models into a standard Dark Angels force. This could generate a third force and also be incorporated into a larger withe the Deathwing. Would it be frowned upon to include a unit of for example - Tactical Marines or a Ravenwing Att/Sup Squadorn in an otherwise Deathwing List?

Also a painting question. Does anyone have any input on my paint scheme (sadly no pics yet) - I'm using at present:

White Undercoat > Bubonic Brown > Flesh Wash Ink (need to find GW Wash alt) > Bleached Bone > 50/50 BB/SW highlight.

Can this be simplified or is this as simple as possible? I know that in some sources the armour should be white but as a giming standard at best painter, this is not suitable. I'm happy with the above but I just wanted to check I wan't missing anything. I tried this before the foundations/washes came out so I haven't tried these yet.

Any feedback to the above would be greatfully appreciated and over the next week or two - circumstances permitting - I'll get some pics up.

Thanks & Regards

In a hurry, but replies are in red

1) What is the ideal balance between Terminator Squads and support elements (Land Raiders/Dreads) I use 1 squad and 1 Raider together

2) Which makes for a second HQ choice an Interrogator Chaplain or Librarian?Chaplain, but only in larger games; 2000pts +

3) Would 1500pts be too small for 1) a second Hq and 2) 1-2 Land Raiders? 1) yes 2) nope!

4) Which LR varient do you find more useful to the Deathwing? Right now I'm thinking Crusaders to help with enemy hordes and the larger capacity to carry a character. LRC is standard for Belials squad, for the rest I use the basic raider. Multiple TL lascannons shots make up for the lack of long range heavy weapons

Quick thoughts:

- Ideally, 1 scoring unit per 500 points. If these units are to also do the killing, I'd say increase by 1.5 factor.

- 2 HQ simply won't fit into 1500 lists. They take up too many points.

- Too small for 2 HQ or 2 LR. 1 may fit.

- LRC, because of fire rate. Hurricane for swarms, TL assault cannon for MC.

- Green marines are ok to include with a DW... its just that they seldomly deliver.

- Gryphonne Sepia is your wash. You can make it yourself with Acrylic matte medium+water (1:1) and adding acrylic colour to the mix.

- As a paint scheme, I think you have it right.

Hope it helps :cuss

Thanks for the replies asmodai650 and Tanhausen.

I'm in the process of drafting an army list and preparing my first two Deathwing squads (right now, after working on a 20 Ork Boy Mob and two units of 10 Black Legionnaires a unit size of 5 is quite a novelty). I also have a number of metal Deathwing which are acting as test models since they can be readilly stripped if need be.

I'm going to apply your advice to my list and do some tweaking, starting with putting the Interrogator-Chaplain on hold for the time being.

Tanhausen, you mention that:

I understand that some Dark Angels players prefer to use Codex Space Marines - possibly due to pts differences. I must admit I didn't think that the Green Marines looked too bad - a little restrictive and slightly dated perhaps, as a result of being the first Codex of the then "new" approach. I have not faced Codex Space Marines or Dark Angels since 3rd Edition (Space Wolves, Chaos, Eldar and more recently the Dark Eldar (who have finally given some attention at last) tend to be the popular armies locally). Are they such an underwhelming choice for what will be at heart Deathwing force?

Again thanks to both of you.

No problem, sorry I had to be so short in answering above.

As far as your "green marines", they are a little more expensive than their Codex: Space Marine counter parts. A DA 5 man squad with sargent with a powerfist in a razorback with TL lascannon and extra armour will be 5 pts more than C: SM. To me, that is no big deal as the 5 man DA squad can get a special weapon where the C: SM squad has to be 10 man. To me, 5 points is not enough to gripe about. Also, in a Deathwing army these "green marines" allow some pressure to be taken off of your terminators be acting as objective grabbers / holders.

2) Which makes for a second HQ choice an Interrogator Chaplain or Librarian?

1. I like 1 for every 500 points, or spread your points 50/50 between Deathwing Squads and other stuff. (At 1000 run 2 squads, 1500 run 3, 2000 run 4) It's just an easy rule of thumb.

2. It depends. Psychic defenses are nice, but our librarians have a paltry Ld9. Most of the time a chaplain will be better.

3. To small for a second HQ, it can be to small for two land raiders.

4. I like both. Assault squads should go in crusaders though (99% of the time).
