Cweorth
Btrethren, I have only had anything to do with Warhammer 40K for a couple of weeks, but the rebel in me just can't help it and I've decided that I'm going to create my own Chapter from the word go. I started out with a Ravenwing army, and loving matt black bikes myself have revolved my Chapter around this. I want to get it right from the outset and therefore am sharing the initial fluff ideas here. Please be gentle with me LOL I'm very new to this, but you guys are the best place I can think of to help me .... So here goes: Cweorth Chapter “Fire marks both beginning and ending: it reminds us that everything new rises from the ashes of the old and that there can be no destruction without creation - and vice versa. This is the great mystery of Cweorth, the rune of the fire-twirl which sustains life and the funeral pyre which marks its passing”. Origins Cweorth is a renegade chapter of the Space Marines, somewhat mercenary in nature but loyal to the cause of mankind against all oppressors and forces of chaos. They fight for what they need to survive and continue with their quest for victory over the oppressors, payment is taken in the form of arms and equipment. What cannot be supplied is taken from the fallen; hence there is no specific signage, although honor accounts for most of the armoury being from Space Marine stock. Aware of the shortcomings of future troops, the Cweorth is constantly on the lookout for warriors to join the chapter. Uncertainty, rumor, gossip and hearsay around the Imperium make a ready band of volunteers, ready to fight to the death for truth and the old Gods. Founding The chapter is founded on a brotherhood of believers whose bond is stronger than gene seed alone. Most of the chapter can boast gene stock from Roboute Guilliman, although rumors run rife of elements from Lion El’ Jonson, in particular the phenomenal bike skills showed in combat has its modern legend deeply rooted in some of the founding troops coming from The Ravenwing. Colours & Markings There is no official marking rules, marines are open to wear apparel that they see fit, although most choose not to wear badges or signs of rank, most wear with pride the Space Marine chest plate on their armour where it can be found and used. All marines are seen as equals and brothers rather than a strict rank structure; titles are given as positions of office, all of which are democratically voted for by the entire chapter. The colour chosen by most of the Cweorth is black with gun metal edges to the shoulder guards and breast plates. The armour, weapons and equipment tend to be battle scarred and heavily worn due to the short supply of replenishments. Organisation Cweorth is an extremely small chapter, slightly heavier in number than a battle force which makes hiding an easier task: Ealdor - Wulfgesith Rune Master - Aelfwine 2 x Bike squads 1 x Attack bike 1 x Landspeeder 1 x Rhino 1 x Tactical squad 1 x Combat squad 1 x Scout squad 1 x Assault squad The above is the chapter at full compliment, due to the mercenary nature of the chapter; sometimes a full force is not possible. Homeworld Cweorth have to be completely nomadic due to the renegade and mercenary nature of their existence, they travel to fight where required, a never ending journey. Beliefs & Philosophy The pre heresy Gods of Earth, rumours of which were discovered in a manuscript and artifacts passed from age to age. Shadows from the Earth before the time where mankind was scattered over a million worlds. In the middle of the 40th Millennium parts of a book, a manuscript and some artifacts were found; the exact details have even been kept secret from some of the higher ranks of the chapter. These are rumoured to have been passed silently on from one place to another since the second millennium, and dated from as far back as the first. They give a glimpse of when there was relative peace throughout the worlds and men worshipped and revered Nature and fought side by side with their women folk as equals to defend their tribes. This strikes an immense chord with members of the chapter, and for this reason the split from the Mother chapter occurred. The Emperor is seen as a living ancestor to be honoured but not worshipped. Nor do they worship the gods of chaos, but instead look back to the Old Gods of the first millennium; Woden, Thunor, Frigge, Tiw, Eorthe and Ing. Combat Doctrine Cweorth warriors are all originally from codex chapters, and despite their subsequent excommunication, still hold allegiance to this. They fight in small units and utilize bikes and other fast attack methods as a preferred method of combat. Motto “Might & Main” Battlecry “For the Gods of old” Cweorth (Tony) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/218626-new-chapter-cweorth/ Share on other sites
Ace Debonair
Btrethren, I have only had anything to do with Warhammer 40K for a couple of weeks, but the rebel in me just can't help it and I've decided that I'm going to create my own Chapter from the word go. Please be gentle with me LOL I'm very new to this, but you guys are the best place I can think of to help me .... So here goes: I'll just wrap the bowling ball of criticism in the bubble-wrap of being the resident nice guy, then. <_< Right - here comes the critical analysis. Brace yourself. :P Cweorth is a renegade chapter of the Space Marines, somewhat mercenary in nature but loyal to the cause of mankind against all oppressors and forces of chaos. They fight for what they need to survive and continue with their quest for victory over the oppressors, payment is taken in the form of arms and equipment. What cannot be supplied is taken from the fallen; hence there is no specific signage, although honor accounts for most of the armoury being from Space Marine stock.Aware of the shortcomings of future troops, the Cweorth is constantly on the lookout for warriors to join the chapter. Uncertainty, rumor, gossip and hearsay around the Imperium make a ready band of volunteers, ready to fight to the death for truth and the old Gods. OK, I'm intrigued. Not a bad start. But who, exactly, are these oppressors? I assume you mean the Imperium, but sometimes it's better to spell these things out. That actually doesn't tell us anything about the founding. Which founding, why they were founded (for example, to bolster Imperial presence in the X sector, or to combat rising numbers of Orks in the Y region) and which geneseed the chapter is from are good points to adress in the origins section. Do me a favour, though - don't go for mixed geneseeds. There's nothing stopping a UM successor from having an affinity for fast attacks and bikes. ;) There is no official marking rules, marines are open to wear apparel that they see fit, although most choose not to wear badges or signs of rank, most wear with pride the Space Marine chest plate on their armour where it can be found and used. All marines are seen as equals and brothers rather than a strict rank structure; titles are given as positions of office, all of which are democratically voted for by the entire chapter. Your average marines see their armour like a patriot sees his country's flag. It is a thing to be honoured and displayed with immense pride. I suspect there'd be a good bit of muttering within the chapter if you abandoned whatever colours you originally used. And most importantly, you need to explain why they have no colours of their own. Every time you come across something in your chapter that isn't standard issue, it's a good idea to explain why those differences exist. :D Cweorth is an extremely small chapter, slightly heavier in number than a battle force which makes hiding an easier task: Wait, what? That was the whole chapter? :D You weren't kidding, that is a small chapter. I'm not sure if I think that's a good idea or not. A chapter that small is probably in danger of extinction. I don't really know if that's what you were aiming for, though. Cweorth have to be completely nomadic due to the renegade and mercenary nature of their existence, they travel to fight where required, a never ending journey. Where required by whom? The pre heresy Gods of Earth, rumours of which were discovered in a manuscript and artifacts passed from age to age. Shadows from the Earth before the time where mankind was scattered over a million worlds. In the middle of the 40th Millennium parts of a book, a manuscript and some artifacts were found; the exact details have even been kept secret from some of the higher ranks of the chapter. Nor do they worship the gods of chaos, but instead look back to the Old Gods of the first millennium; Woden, Thunor, Frigge, Tiw, Eorthe and Ing. Hmm. Your chapter just happened to stumble on this information despite the Emperor wiping religions out? And they convert immediately? I find that a bit too unlikely, to be honest. Cweorth warriors are all originally from codex chapters, and despite their subsequent excommunication, still hold allegiance to this. They fight in small units and utilize bikes and other fast attack methods as a preferred method of combat. Yes, tell us about this excommunication. Why are they renegades? Why do they worship Gods that have been basically erased from humanity's history, since long before the chapter's creation? It's also far more likely that the marines you have in your chapter are the ones who were always in your chapter than ones you picked up from elsewhere. Renegade marines aren't common enough for you to tour the Imperium recruiting them. :P -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= All in all, it's not a bad start. But, you could do with giving them a little more history, for instance explaining how and why your lads became renegades. And justifying the whole 'old gods' stuff, which I must admit is going to be a tricky concept to float. But stick at it. With time your chapter will evolve into something cool and unique. Oh, and kudos for jumping right in with the DIY crowd. :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/218626-new-chapter-cweorth/#findComment-2606702 Share on other sites
Cweorth
I thank you for your very helpful insights and advice. I now aim to take any comments and take my time in padding this all out. I'm hoping it will grow in tandem with the modelling of the army. And definitely take your time - the results are always better than stuff that gets rushed out, something I can personally attest to. :) If I might reccomend a bit of reading, too - the DIY guide stickied at the top of the forum is filled with a lot of useful information. It's a long read, but thoroughly worth it. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/218626-new-chapter-cweorth/#findComment-2606736 Share on other sites
Octavulg
but the rebel in me just can't help it and I've decided that I'm going to create my own Chapter from the word go. This is the impulse that destines you to good things and shows you to be a man of discerning taste and inarguable good character. :P Cweorth Chapter What's a Cweorth? There's a lot of established ways to name a Chapter, and this isn't any of them. Honestly, it just looks weird. Plus, there's the in-universe issue of why a Chapter Master would name his Chapter after some weird language on some weird planet. Gothic is the language of the Emperor, after all. “Fire marks both beginning and ending: it reminds us that everything new rises from the ashes of the old and that there can be no destruction without creation - and vice versa. This is the great mystery of Cweorth, the rune of the fire-twirl which sustains life and the funeral pyre which marks its passing”. Nice. That still doesn't make it a good name for a Chapter, but nice. ;) Cweorth is a renegade chapter of the Space Marines, somewhat mercenary in nature but loyal to the cause of mankind against all oppressors and forces of chaos. Aware of the shortcomings of future troops, the Cweorth is constantly on the lookout for warriors to join the chapter. Uncertainty, rumor, gossip and hearsay around the Imperium make a ready band of volunteers, ready to fight to the death for truth and the old Gods. What old Gods? The only gods that would transcend the Imperium would seem likely to be the gods of Chaos... The chapter is founded on a brotherhood of believers whose bond is stronger than gene seed alone. Most of the chapter can boast gene stock from Roboute Guilliman, although rumors run rife of elements from Lion El’ Jonson, in particular the phenomenal bike skills showed in combat has its modern legend deeply rooted in some of the founding troops coming from The Ravenwing. If the DA contributed founding troops to a Chapter, I can't imagine they wouldn't be a full DA successor, with knowledge of the Fallen and all that stuff. Cweorth is an extremely small chapter, slightly heavier in number than a battle force which makes hiding an easier task:Ealdor - Wulfgesith Rune Master - Aelfwine 2 x Bike squads 1 x Attack bike 1 x Landspeeder 1 x Rhino 1 x Tactical squad 1 x Combat squad 1 x Scout squad 1 x Assault squad There's no shame in not owning your entire Chapter, you know. OK, the idea that the knowledge of the Norse Gods has endured forty millenia is kinda pushing it, honestly. That, and as previously mentioned, the Emperor was very thorough in his eradication of previous religions. Then there's the fact that his religion replaced them (and was mighty eager about making sure other religions were absorbed or destroyed, including other branches of Emperor-worship). Then there's the issue that non-Imperial religions are almost always fronts for Chaos, and the bloody and exciting Norse Gods would seem perfect candidates for that. Leonaides
some interesting ideas- i'll try and drop by with some suggestions when i have internet again rather than using my phone. Until then, you've already had some good questions from these guys, have a good think about what they're saying, and why. Good luck with the diy. Cweorth
Brethren, after a bit of debate with myself, I feel as though my extreme inexperience in all this has got the beeter of me so for the time being I'm going to shelve this project. Never mind, I see that the Raven Guard are nicely all black, so from a motto I used to have emblazened on one of my old matt black motorcycles "chrome don't get you home" Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/218626-new-chapter-cweorth/#findComment-2609675 Share on other sites
