5th & 9th Company Sergeant Shoulder Pads

DexC

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Getting back into the hobby after some time off, and looking to repaint (or in some cases paint for the first time) my old Blood Angels. Now, I fancied doing 5th Company, but I haven't been able to find out from anywhere how I ought to paint up the Sergeant's right shoulder pad. Black blood drops on black pad seems somewhat pointless. I had thought of using a SG/DC shoulderpad with a raised large single blood drop, but that still leaves me with the colour problem. So, anyone got any ideas on how to make this look good? I had thought of just going with red pads for the Sarge, but I'm not really a fan of that idea.

Firstly, welcome to the boards ;)

Onto topic... I second ancient god's suggestion

... or if one is unable to get a pad with a raised-outlined blood drop, we could try having two shades of black? Perhaps the background or the blood drop would be one or two shades lighter than the other, enough to visually separate the two?

Hth :tu:

welcome to the ba, and to the 5th co! indeed its a white outline on the blood drop. a pain sure... but it works. scouts is debateable... page71 in our dex, top left shows a 5th co tactical sarge. page 70 shows a scout sarge but his shoulderpads are the same as the rest shown. however that really dosent look like a vet sarge so i say its up to you on that one. personally if it was me id say for sniper sarge, use telion and wwork from there. if cc, he should have etter weapons than standard, and you could make fists etc stand out relatively easily. though id prob do something with the pads, like invert it... hope that helps!

A visual of a few options, note these are from the black-trim standpoint.

1. Official method.

2. In days of yore (RT) the black/red trim switch was specifically said to be an inversion of the colours - at the time the chapter badge inverted from black to red along with the trim, one could therefor apply the same to the modern company drops (it wasn't an issue back then since the only colours were yellow, blue & white) - wouldn't work with the new scout marking however.

3. semi-RT method - back then only the chapter badge pad inverted, company pad stayed the same.

4. semi-RT method - use the RT BA company designation of two blue drops for the 5th or three white drops for the 9th and call it a homage.

Wow, thanks for the detailed replies.

I didn't know about the 'inversion of colours' thing from RT (I started with 2nd Ed.) so I might go with that, as I've not got much confidence in my ability to paint a decent freehand blood drop.
