There is no defection or going renegade from the imperium. We exist as an autonomous force within the imperium answering ONLY to the Emperor and King Leman. The Eccelesiarchy ships were fired upon because like most radical fanatics they over stepped their bounds and tread where angels fear. They had the outright audacity to accuse and attempt a show of force on the Rout after hearing some baseless rumors of pagan god worship and instead were met with a greater show of force which resulted in a three week war after which they realize "let sleeping dogs lie and withdraw its forces" (pg 19 space wolves codex). I do not believe any space marine chapter especially a founding Legion would allow some moon touched fools to go traipsing around our house all willy nilly. As far as the chaos like depictions? Are you serious? All chapters are affected by their homeworlds. The affectations on our armor are a reflection of that. It just show happens that Fenris is one of three death worlds most hostile to human life. How should warriors of such a planet look? There are no more stalwart defenders of humanity than the Rout. You might remember that sometimes the look of a warrior is to discourage the enemy. It is to strike fear into the enemies we face and is a reflection of our culture, there is nothing chaos about it. The canis helix itself is a bit of a proof against chaos in the first place ( 13th company 10k years IN the warp STILL loyal) Tactical it is extremely unsound for the Vlka Fenryka to break from the imperium and defend humanity on our own terms. Bolt's dont make themselves and we do not build star ships on Fenris. The more important fact is that breaking from the imperium in which we literally helped build makes us Oath-breakers and there is NO worse thing than an oath breaker. As far as Leman returning and saying, "OMG what the hell happened...why is my dad all beef jerky, where are my brothers? What is this god worship? Inqui what? Grey who? Oh man this is soooo messed up..." Honestly thats a possibility but again, Oath-breaker... Never that. If anything Leman would just say F this and start recruiting like mad and unleash us upon as many battle fields as we are possibly needed going to where no other chapter can and re assume our role of doing the dirty work.
