A story about the glory bestowed upon the Space Wolves from the noble Emperor.

Today the wolves of Fenris went up against the insidious Tyranids in a battle of named characters. The overmind brought forth the Swarmlord whilst the Space Wolves sent Njal, caller of storms.

The setup was 1000 points and both me and my opponent wrote down a suitbale list quite fast.

Mine was the afermentioned Njal, two Lone Wolves with TDA, storm shield and thunderhammer, two Grey hunter packs and a pack of Long Fangs.

My opponent brought the Swarmlord, two small units of Warriors, a harpy, two zoanthropes and a dakka-fex.

I must say that I was truly impressed by the resiliance and tenacity of the Lone Wolves, there was not anything that they couldnt take on and beat down. One went toe to toe with the dakkafex and the other one went after the harpy. Both of the tyranids were smashed into a green pulp with the Lone Wolves walking out unschated and ready for more. More came in the form of the Swarmlord that assaulted one of the Lone wolves. The best the tyranids had to offer couldnt phase our hero.

More troops piled into the fight and the two full packs of Grey Hunters brought their power fists and let loose on the Swarmlord.

Due to the mission rules the named HQ cannot be killed by no other than the other named HQ, but I did however "kill" the Swarmlord two times over until my troops ran out.

Swarmlord went after Njal, who I had positioned a fair bit away so I could blast the tyranid monstrosity from afar, where the Swarmlord cast his own psychic powers and failed them taking a wound! But we agreed that named HQ`s couldnt commit suicide so we went on with the game, which would end shortly enough.

Njal brought his mind to bear and let loose the terrible powers of the living lightning and electrocuting the overminds champion on the battlefield.

The victory went to the sons of Russ!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As I said earlier, the Lone Wolves resiliance was amazing. Even though they didnt have to bear the full force of the ranged weapons the tyranids had at their disposal (and Njal cancelling psyching powers left and right) they did amazingly well.

Recieving a charge from Swarmlord and dakkafex and both could still fight on more turns to come. A harpy went "splat" in the first turn of CC.

In any other game my Grey Hunters would have killed the Swarmlord in two turns and about 15 of them would have massacred the other tyranids nearby. Both Lone Wolves would still have been alive as well.

Njal isnt much of a fighter, but as a supportive character he has his virtues. Especially the full access to all SW psychic powers. He accounted for several tyranid warriors, a zoanthrope and cancelling most enemy powers that could have been a real nusiance to my force.

All in all, the mission was not a good one and I will not play it again. Killing a named character thrice before it finally would stay down felt a little bit odd. Still, the Space Wolves held the field in the end.

I really think you have to take two, as one foot slogging in my force really doesn't do much (and is now replaced ).

It also depends what you go up against, and my luck with storm shields is rather random, first time I used lone wolves my terminator armour, storm shield and thunder hammer guy took 3 shots to die...
