Br0ther Rafen
Hey guys After admiring a lot of the beautiful free handing techniques from friends and people on the B&C, i want to start out, but i find it very difficult to paint the starting guidelines for a design. Do you vets have any advice on how to draw up a design relatively easily without it looking wonky/oversized? thanks for any input in advance. WingsOfTheFalcon
I guess it's just a case of a steady hand and doing everything in stages. Wha are you wanting to freehand? If you can give us a rough idea, we can do you a step-by-step. Brother Nihm
There is quite a few articles in The Librarium that deal with freehand painting, they should help to get you started. winterdyne
Practice on paper. The main trick is to learn how to construct your design from simple, easily repeatable or symmetrical shapes. After that it's basically thin paint and brush control. Stolid Fox
Only thing I might add is that free-handing something abstract first might give you more room for error. Complex swirlies on a Libby/Sorc type, say, rather than trying to make Calgar's Land Raider :cuss Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/218953-painting-freehand/#findComment-2611046 Share on other sites

Hyaenidae
A good brush is important as well. At my local hobby store, there are a variety of brush gauges that run from large number gauges, down to a small bin of brushes with the label "insane detail" (about three hairs on the brush) above them. Don't be afraid to spend a few extra dollars on a solid brush for whatever size detail you're doing, it'll pay back huge in the long run.
