A bit cheeky of me to comment (with your skills far surpassing mine own) but the head looks a tad small as does the barrel of the gun. All other proportions look awesome though! Razrhaghul Posted January 11, 2011 Share Posted January 11, 2011 I love the lighting and reflection off the armor, this is a fantastic WIP. I'm going to defend the size of the marine's head. The size of the bolt pistol actually is on par with what a realistically scaled one would look like (a regular human would have to brace that thing with two hands). They're scaled-up on the model for painting details and so that you can identify what marines are armed with from across a table. the pistol has some kind of perspective problem though, from what I can tell the body is parallel to the marine's arm, but I think it's the magazine that needs tweaked, like it's twisted or we shouldn't be able to see so much of the bottom. I think it's that the right leg's greave needs to be extended on the inside a bit...and maybe the knee and greave should be turned outward so that they aren't facing right at us..? i'm looking forward to this when it's finished Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Drudge Dreadnought Posted January 12, 2011 Share Posted January 12, 2011 What you're doing with the armor is absolutely amazing. But yeah, I'm gonna agree about the bolt pistol. It's just far too small. Aren't bolt pistols to marines like .50 cal revolvers to humans size wise? All the major GW artists depict them as much larger, and I think in the context of this picture he'll look much more heroic if it was bigger. Think of a motorbike helmet on someone's head, then add everything else into it. Unless you're deliberately doing it that way to not draw attention to the head and instead keep it on the banner & pistol, then it makes sense to make it slightly smaller. I think I disagree. Excellent work here, as others have already said, but to my mind, if there's something wrong about this marine, it's the hands. He has quite tiny hands - his right one is closest to the beholder, still it is smaller than the head. The fluff says that a Space Marine is capable of crushing a man's head with his bare hands. But how would he do that if he could hardly grasp such a head? Compared his own hand and his helmet, which is far more away from the watcher, his hands seem to small. But in the end, this doesn't matter. Is it a Raptors Chapter Marine? @ Drudge Dreadnought: Bolt pistols use roughly the same ammunition as boltguns. And since boltgun rounds are .75, bolt pistols sure would be, too (c.f. core rulebook, 3rd edition). If I am not mistaken, that is. oO Might mix something up. I think the problem with artwork based on a well established archetype is that alot of criticisms will be based on a persons personal view of how that thing is presented.
