farseerixirvost
Playing a few small point games soon, and looking to field a single cheap HQ. My list currently allows me to get up to 105 points for him, and not a single point more (I'd even prefer less, but at sub-100, the only choice is the WGBL). So with a hundred points, looks like I can get: WGBL with a few minor goodies - thinking Frost Blade and WTN. Rune Priest ("naked"). Wolf Priest (also "naked"). Are there pros and/or cons to which is best in a 1k game? If it matters, my list is basically 4 GH squads - 3 in Drop Pods w/ Fist Wolf Guard attached and one home objective camper, and a Long Fang squad (3 missiles). Make me an offer I can't refuse (i.e., suggest what and why). Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/219176-which-cheap-hq-choice/ Share on other sites
Freman Bloodglaive
Fast reply. Rune Priest Psychic powers, psychic protection, comes with all you need for 100 points. Ullr Direfang
I would say WOlf PRiest. Has the 4++ and can buff what ever squad you run him with. Sarapham
Rune Priest is the best all around, fits in any kind of list. Wolf Priest is more specialized and is slightly wasted if not in CC. Kjarl Bluetooth
I agree with the others - the Rune Priest is the best all around option you've got for the points. nurglez
rune priest, can provide your army with psychic protection on those few games you need it, and brings a lot of choices all at the same cost, due to power options. Artex
The fists in your GH squads take up a total of 100 points, and they wont get that many attacks to be honest. If you drop them you could fit in 2 Runepriests or a pimped out Wolf Lord. Wildfire
Rune Priest. He give psychic protection and powers that can be used as soon as he's on the table. Wolf Priest goes better when you're going to be assaulting more, and Grey Hunters charge less. Brother Grius
I've always liked a WGBL with Paired LC. 100 points. The only con is no invulnerable save. The key is to have him slaughter hundreds of innoce- err.. infantry. His Initiative 5 can be a valuable tool that can cut his foes down before they strike. I may be biased based on my allegiances though. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/219176-which-cheap-hq-choice/#findComment-2614351 Share on other sites
Gerwulf
I agree, for small points games you can't go wrong with a rune priest. I personally favour living lightning and murderous hurricane. For me those are the absolutely best psychic powers ever. Living lightning for the unlimited range and possibility to crack open light vehicles and also put a few wounds on monstrous creatures. Murderous hurricane is just awesome, the hits don't really do a lot of damage, but having to roll for dangerous and difficult terrain whenever the enemy moves is really helpful. I use it to slow down key units of my opponent and whittle them down a bit more with the wounds. Taking a wound with no armour/invulnerable/feel no pain save is not too bad and it has it's uses against almost any codex. Grey Mage
Im also going to throw in for a Rune Priest. Psychic Protection is a must for me these days, and his potent psychic powers dont hurt either. Not a combat badass, but then you cant have everything. Marshal Wilhelm
Rune Priest ("naked"). Make me an offer I can't refuse (i.e., suggest what and why). Take the witch, though if power armour is too expensive at least give it a fig leaf, for the love of the Emperor. It is always most satisfying skewering a warp dabbler with The Black Sword. *Imperious look* Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/219176-which-cheap-hq-choice/#findComment-2614401 Share on other sites
Orphus
WGBL with twin wolf claws and WTN (I don't do 'cheap' so this is as bare as I could bear) :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/219176-which-cheap-hq-choice/#findComment-2614559 Share on other sites
nurglez
i swear by living lightning and murderous hurricane too, casting MH on a daemon prince and watching them strike at I1 due to moving through cover is priceless (especially when you kill one before they can strike). farseerixirvost
Thanks, fellow Wolf Lords. Glad to see all the options got at least a couple votes, but clearly the Rune Priest is the hands-down winner by a landslide. Thanks again! Valerian
Looks like I should give my Rune Priest another try.... he tended to kill him self in the past tho... Yeah, go with the Rune Priest. At 1000 points, many players won't have any psykers, or psychic defenses, so you can have your way with them. When you run up against someone who does, then you'll want the RP to counter whatever nastiness they've got in store for you. The RP is a great "first" HQ choice. Move to the others when you increase the size of your games, and have the freedom to include different types of capabilities. Vassakov
Chalk another up for the Rune Priest. Living Lightning at that points level is mean, and something like Murderous Hurricane can slow a unit significantly. Especially evil to cast it on an IG Guard Blob squad near an objective, but not on it and watch him sweat. :tu: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/219176-which-cheap-hq-choice/#findComment-2615832 Share on other sites
