Wiggle Room

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have an Army that began as a Salamander Force back about the time of Armageddon. But since I didn't like the all green look, I gave them black thighs, arms, feet and faces. Oh, and gold aquilla. Jump forward a decade or so and I'm getting back into 40K and I have these guys who look a LOT like the Disciples of Caliban.

Question: Do Dark Angel Successor color schemes vary enough for me to call my guy Disciples or do I really need to go in an touch them up to match the single published photo?

Thanks

Simple answer: it's your army do paint and call them whatever you like :ermm:. The gold aquila with that Disciples scheme sounds pretty cool anyway.

Cheers

As far as I can tell the Dark Angels, even a chapter founded as late as the 37th M, don't really use company colors, do they? Otherwise I could claim the aquila is just showing the company color (even if I also do a company badge on the knee). Maybe I could claim the gold is somehow related to being an honor badge.....

Not sure what to do about the black face masks except say that (like the color change to the Deathwing) there was some event in the company's past for which they paint their face masks black. Battle on an ash and tar world, heroic fight led by a Chaplain, something like that.

Thanks for the reply.

I have seen many variant colour schemes of established chapters. Hell, Blood Angels players to this day cannot decide wether BA have black shoulder pad trims or not. I am a bit of a purist and would probably do a quick touch-up - painting the faces and chest eagles should be a matter of minutes per marine if you do it assembly-line-style - but I wouldn't mind the variant either. And disciples of caliban look awesome, and I think they'll look just as awesome with golden aquilas.

Yeah, it wouldn't take long to repaint. Call it one day because I also have to do all the shoulders and lower arms. And I tend yo be a purist somewhat myself which is why they are not Salamanders - the "wrong" paint scheme or livery are like an itch you can't scratch. I went back and looked. While many figs have the basic black and green, most do not have the gold because well ten years ago I was not as disciplined about painting. I only have gold aquila on 5 terminators (out of 20), 10 assault marines, the command squad, and one tactical squad. Of these, the command squad also has gold shoulder trim and the tacticals are the only squad which is fully completed (as in based, highlighted, and sealed). Only the Champion and Xavier have chapter markings because I could never decide who these guys were. Most tanks are either black primered or green and black in a a sort of odd camoflage.

Of all of these things, I am somewhat inclined to keep the black face mask and call it a company tradition. I may keep the aquillas on the few models that have them - call it a campaign badge - it will eventually be lost by the more "purist" models. I have to confess a great deal of nervousness about the chapter emblem. I'm a terrible free-hand painter and I can't find any decals for the emblem.

The Disciples are supposed to have been founded in M37. That makes them most likely 22nd or maybe 23rd Foundings, "shortly" after the cursed founding. Do you think it is out of bounds for the disciples to have a successor?

Acolytes of the Rock?

Emerald Cohort?

Dark Vipers?

At present, I'm honestly prefering to keep them as Disciples because there are aspects of the disciple fluff I like such as the super-pure gene-seed under a microscope or the sense of built for some secret purpose. I'm probably leaning towards saying it is a company thing. Perhaps they got in a long running desperate fight where they and a bunch of Salamanders fought off desperate odds in caverns full of Orks and in remembrance they use a lot of meltas and flamers and have black face masks. Likewise, the gold trim could denote a campaign such as Armageddon or that could just be a story and what it really denotes is being part of a mission that successfully recovered one of the fallen.
