thechosen1
Hiya, everyone! So, for the painting challenge, I swore to paint a full squad of 10 Assault Marines, 2 full squads of Tactical Marines, and 1 Razorback. I've got the infantry at about 60% completion; I haven't done highlighting, shadowing, etc yet. My paint scheme is pretty simple, and with a lot of practice, I can crank out basic looking infantry in a very short amount of time. My first Tactical Squad, 2nd Company, 1st Squad Azar: http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d184/darkjedi908/DSCF0988.jpg Tactical Sergeant with Powerfist and Combi-Melta: http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d184/darkjedi908/DSCF0989.jpg Assault Squad: http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d184/darkjedi908/DSCF0985.jpg Assault Sergeant: http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d184/darkjedi908/DSCF0986.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d184/darkjedi908/DSCF0987.jpg I'd appreciate any advice you all could give me; I'm still learning how to paint. MagicMan
Its looking nice so far buddy. The white on the shoulder pads looks a little thick though, do you thin your paints with water? With lighter colours, you'll often find that you get a smoother finish with a couple of coats of thinner paint. Keep up the good work! thechosen1
Yeah, I noticed that my white looks off too. Is there a specific ratio of paint/water mix you'd recommend? Thanks for your input! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/219356-marines-mendicant-wip-thread/#findComment-2616866 Share on other sites
MagicMan
To the consistency of milk is the best advice i can offer. At first you'll think, what the hell have i done, this looks awful. But keep going with the thinner coats and you'll get a solid white finish. I notice the same with the red on your guy's weapons. You can see the black showing through. For Red, try using a brown colour as the basecoat (Or mechrite red, if you have it), then apply a few thinned coats of the red colour you want. For white, paint all the stuff thats going to be white a light grey colour, such as fortress grey, then apply the thinned coats of white. Not blowing my own trumpet, but i use white extensively on my army and it comes out as a fairly solid white. Takes about 4 thinned coats of white over the grey, give it a try, see what you think. Heres an example, Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/219356-marines-mendicant-wip-thread/#findComment-2617279 Share on other sites
MagicMan
Oooh, just noticed you have some of the washes hiding in the back of one of the pictures. The Devlan mud looks good slapped on just about anything, metal, skin, bone, reds etc. Try putting it on the metal parts of your models to get some shading, the same with skin colours. Once its dry and the brown colour has settled in the recesses, you can go back over the higher parts of the area with the original colour.] So with faces you'd go back and paint the flesh colour on cheekbones, brows, noses, foreheads etc. Give it a try and see if you like it. Good luck, man! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/219356-marines-mendicant-wip-thread/#findComment-2617281 Share on other sites

thechosen1
Thank you all for your kind replies! I think I'm posting the finished pictures in time for the deadline; without further adieu, first off is a long-outdated WIP update of a Tactical Marine: http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d184/darkjedi908/Bolter%20and%20Chainsword%20Challenge/DSCF1085.jpg School and personal drama possessed my life for a bit; I didn't really take many other WIP pics besides that lame one. But, the finished ones should make up for it. And the finished piece: http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d184/darkjedi908/Bolter%20and%20Chainsword%20Challenge/DSCF1080.jpg Librarian and company: http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d184/darkjedi908/Bolter%20and%20Chainsword%20Challenge/DSCF1084.jpg Assault Terminators: http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d184/darkjedi908/Bolter%20and%20Chainsword%20Challenge/DSCF1082.jpg Tactical Terminators: http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d184/darkjedi908/Bolter%20and%20Chainsword%20Challenge/DSCF1081.jpg Assault, Tactical Marines & Razorback: http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d184/darkjedi908/Bolter%20and%20Chainsword%20Challenge/DSCF1083.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/219356-marines-mendicant-wip-thread/#findComment-2705931 Share on other sites
