How to avoid band-wagoning?

All you should care about is the attitude of the gamer across the table from you. What might seem "broken" or "cheesy" to you might be 100% "fluffy" to them. And you are in no position to judge. The game is for all of us. All of us. Don't define what is or is not "fun" for people other than yourself.

As always, #6, I couldn't have said it better myself.

My big concern with the new codex is actually slightly different. All my friends know I've played GKs for years, and I have dozens of pewter models to prove it to anyone new. My big worry is actually that many other people will actually bandwagon. Don't get me wrong, I welcome new GK players to the fold, and am glad to share my love of the boys in silver. However, I'd be lying if I said some part of me hasn't enjoyed being part of a small, select group of truly dedicated gamers who were willing to stick with the GKs through thick and thin. Not only are we all really dedicated to our army, but we've managed to scrape out success with our horrendously underpowered codex for years, showing that we're also among the elite players. I know it's petty, but that part of me is going to be sad to see the snot-nosed little kiddies plopping down their new plastic GKs all around me. I want being a GK player to still mean something.

Ah well, I've had my rant, and now I'll let it go and just be happy to have some GK love from GW again. Because, on the whole, this is really a fantastic time for us!

Aidoneus, I feel you there.

In August I'm going to a tourney with some friends of mine, and I had mixed feelings about the release of the new Codex.

On one hand, I'm glad that we're finally getting brought on par with other, newer Codexes, and will meet similar success stories as they have in the recent months. An updated gear list will bring tears of joy to my eye (I'm looking at you, old-school StormShield).

On the other hand, I know that with every OTHER Codex that has been released, there's always a rush to get them, to play them and field them. While I too feel a sort of joy in welcoming new folks to the table, I feel like when I go to the tourney in August, instead of being one of the only people playing Grey Knights, that I'll be facing off against a dozen or moreso of such armies.

I too feel that little tug on the heartstrings for being one of the elite few who stuck by it and made it work out, despite being old and horrendously outdated.

I'd like to be able to go to a hobby shop and not see Grey Knights on every third table.

Loyatly is a dead cause huh, Aidoneus?

I don't mind people buying buying up Grey Knights when they're released, in fact I hope their a huge success like Dark Eldar and that we gain some loyal fans for the longterm. Though they'd be certain situation that would wind me up. It's when a certain type of player starts blagging that Grey Knights are the only army they have ever stood by, when you know they probably don't even own a copy of C:DH and/or will be the first one to jump ship when Codex: Black Templars comes out. After the years we've had to put up with being (probably) the only members of a club playing Grey Knights, being told that our codex is most uncompetitive and even 'jurassic' it wouldn't be right to allow such weasely leering.

EDIT: 17/01/2011 - Grammar, harshness, etc.

I fear you guys are going to end up like the BAs and not the SW or IG , GK are still going to be very hard to play well . So I dont think you will see many people view GK playing gamers as bandwagoners . Thats unless the game size you normaly use is 2250 or more , under that the GK armies are just too small and a lot of the upgrades they can technicly take are just there for the fluff [just like a lot of BA gear too].

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I had this sort of conversation many times before by beloved Dark Eldar were released. The only new dark eldar player I've seen to date was actually an old one who had given up hope years ago and moved on. So (in my area at least) I'm expoecting more 'true believers' to come out of the woodwork than bandwagonners.

Because I was rather bored and love deleting little white pixels, I made this:

Here's the BB Code. Just add a bracket to the front of url=blah], img], /img], and /url]:

Hell when the Sisters get their long wanted Plastics I WILL be Band Wagoning I have always want to play them But have never wanted to buy a full metal army in NZ I have no children to sell so it would be pointless since they come to roughly 12 for a basic SOB how ever their Exocist is roughly the same as a Rhino.

You could always care less. :P I know a ton of players who stop by my FLGS every month to play in the 40k tournament who are always using the newest army with the newest min-maxed theorized list. It's annoying, but they paid money for it so they should be allowed to use it without complaint.

It isn't like 40k has a caste system of who can play what army.

Bloody typical, just when I'm starting to really enjoy my Sanguinary Guard army my first love is on the way back.

I'm not too fussed about the bandwagon, like the wolves and BA's they will be gone a few months after the codex comes out. People will of learned to beat them and the bandwagoners will flee to the next new thing that they hope will give them easy wins.

If I band-wagon — and I may, though probably not — I confess that it actually won't be because of the codex. I would play with the codex now, and I've even written army lists that I never got a chance to use.

No, if I jump on the wagon, it won't be because of new rules. It will be because of those long-awaited, longed-for, sexy sexy plastic GK Terminators.

actually I used to heavily think about grey knights as an army before i stuck with the blood angels, i had the codex, some killer lists, and tactics, but i hate painting metal. now that new plastics are being released, i'm going to go back into the grey knights once my blood angels are painted and at 5000 points (currently at 4000) so i don't know if that makes me a bandwagoner or not but i will start grey knights this.

I must admit i do like the exclusivity of being the only grey knight player in my games club at present, but i don't begrudge anyone who goes 'ooooooo cool i want it!' because thats the exact reason i picked this army too. The only difference is the timing.

The only time to be be concerned about bandwagoning is if your the kind of person who rushes out buys half an army then 2 months later shelves it and REGRETS blowing your budget. That is the only time to be concerned and hold back

To add to the above, I know the one other die-hard player at my gaming store has already set aside time and money for the up and coming release because he, like myself, is genuinely excited that FINALLY we're getting a leg up. Funnier still, are the people at the store who are a little worried about what will become of their winning records when something like the Grey Knight's takes the field (I'm 6W/1D/0L so far, and the other guy is about equal if not a little better; despite the new and shiny codices, we're holding our own damned well). They're worried that something that's quite capable of putting up a heck of a fight in the right hands will now be able to falcon-punch Avatar's of War, Daemon Princes, and Greater Daemons off the table with ease, and everything else will be just gravy.

For myself, I've already set aside a good chunk of money, and have suspended commissions beyond the start of April to give myself time to paint up my new Grey Knight force in time for a tourney in August (fancy that the LPC ends on March 31st, no?) :)

I agree though; someone who runs out to buy up the big shiny, then shelves it in a few months makes me want to punt grots into a woodchipper.

Every game out there has bandwagoners that jump from faction to faction with a new release. These are the same kind of people that jump from class to class in a MMO as they follow the current power curve. They're unavoidable.

Personally, I'm just getting into 40k and decided that I love everything to do with the Inquisition (Witch Hunters and Daemonhunters). It just so happened that I saw the announcement of the Grey Knight book after that decision and am going to wait until it comes out before I start getting them. Does that make me a bandwagoner? It doesn't really matter to me. I'm just looking to get into the fluff I like.

Tusic, I don't think that makes you the 'typical' powercurve jumper if that's the reason you're getting into it. You're doing it because of the story, because of the fluff involved, rather than "Omg this has more pew than that does, I MUST USES ITZ". That I can respect. That I have no problem giving a clap on the back and saying "Welcome to the club".

It's everyone else that does it simply because they want to see if they can get their rofl-stomp on with what's new and shiny this month needs to slam their junk in a sliding glass door.

Personally I think the fact you can say you were attracted to Witch Hunters and Daemon Hunters in their current state means you can't be a powergaming bandwagoneer by definition :) Really what gets people into these two Codices is fluff and background, either of the Grey Knights, the Inquisition itself, or the Adepta Sororitas.

And since that's the case, welcome! I hope your stay is long and memorable, and we don't bite ;) No, not even against Chaos, I don't want to corrupt my teeth!

I fully intend to lovingly embrace the GK bandwagon before leaping all over it, I don't care what people think. It's my hobby as well as everyone elses, they've probably bandwagoned themselves over one army or another. Besides, if you're introducing a new army into your gaming group it can only benefit everyone, variety etc etc.

Hey, after nine long years of long-suffering with my SoB army (mostly pure, only have a couple of IQ models, PenEn, arco's etc) I finally broke down and bought some Dark Angels (love the fluff, love the models, love the new and different options). Obviously, the DA's are nothing new (but will be soon, EMPY-permitting). My friends know my "history" with the game, and I couldn't possibly care less about those that don't know me, especially if they're crass enough to make such uninformed commentary.

Thanks for the welcoming guys (and for not lumping me in with those that need their junk slammed in a sliding door Vindicatus  ).

As I'm a long-playing World of Warcraft player, I've seen so many of these "flavor of the month" types it's really mind-boggling. Although, for WoW, it's merely a time investment. With a hobby like 40k it's obviously a decent money investment to be a bandwagon jumper.

I guess it's just a matter of sticking through for a bit until the next Codex comes out. If there are some who would look down on you as a bandwagoner, let 'em. You know you're not, and that's what really matters, right?

Also, don't look down on those who you see pulling out GK armies for the first time. They could've had 'em in storage for years and are taking the opportunity to breathe new life into the figs.
