WH40778
Ok, this is the first time that I write down all my ideas about my chapter. My greatest difficulty, however, was to translate it in English (because i'm not english, duh), so i might have done some errors...sorry. Anyway, here it is. Apart from Telchar and Tyrian, all other names are just work of fantasy, and any possible reference is purely casual! The Sentinels are a quite uncommon chapter, since they believe that every Imperium citizen is equal and that their duty is to protect them, no matter the cost, to keep the Imperium itself strong in such a dark age. Changelog---------------- -Changed the geneseed an Primarch thing. -Added more history about the Homeplanet section to better understand the chapter's creed. -Slightly changed the Combat Doctrine section. No more attrition battles. -Changed Organisation section. Now better explained the absence of Chaplains (even better, their substitution). No more Ark Mechanicus -Changed the Beliefs section. I've corrected some errors and tweaked the whole thing. Origins and Gene Seed Very little is known about the past of this chapter. It is stated in the Imperial Archives that it was founded during the mid M.32, as part of the 5th founding, and then was sent to the Segmentum Ultima, to protect the remote human colonies in the Dominion of Storms from the unknown menaces that could come from the uncharted space of the Eastern Fringe, wich even the Light of the Astronomican could not reach. They were created with the same gene seed of Ferrus Manus, and share some traits with the original Legion of the Iron Hands. Homeworld and Capitular Fortress As soon as the Sentinels came to the Dominion of Storms, they settled on the planet Ultima Thule, calling it their home from that time on. This world was covered with great plains as well as large mountains, the soil was fertile, rivers and forests were commonly found all around the surface of the world. Several cities rose on the surface of the planet, fulgent examples of the Imperium's greatness. Being at such a distance from the center of the Imperium, the planet's society was completely different from the monarchy of the Emperor, but it was instead a completely equalitarian system, where every citizen had the same rights and could individually choose how to live their lives. This was permitted by the vast natural resources of the planet, that allowed to distribute the a modest wealth equally to every citizen. As the Sentinels recruited most of their members from the planet's cities, this affected much their own creed and belief system. However Ultima Thule and the whole system suffered a terrible fate because of what happened just at the beginning of M.35. A terrible warp storm invested the entire system, unleashing cataclysm of enormous proportions on the worlds on its path. The whole planet was devastated by the foul energies of warp, cracking the entire surface of the world itself and covering it with rifts and scars. All the living beings were exterminated and, once the storm ended, nothing was left behind but a dead world. Fortunately, the chapter managed to escape and also rescued some settlers aboard their battleships , but the majority of the population was wiped out by the warp storm. Even though the cataclysms shattered their homeworld, the Sentinels still use it as their base of operations, where they coordinate the defense of all the nearby systems, that were left untouched by the tempests. There the Sentinels rebuilt the chapter fortress and renamed it Everlasting memory, to commemorate all the people who died because of the cataclysm. Being entirely made out of metal, the stronghold shines beneath the tenuous light of the star and stands immovable on the surface of the planet. However, most of the fortress is built underneath the barren ground and it spreads for several kilometers deep into the rock. This is where the space marines of the chapter train and choose where to go on mission next. The chapter’s schedule states that at least two companies of space marines have to garrison the fortress, both for security and maintenance purposes, and, if forced to leave for extraordinary events, one Master of the Forge and at least 5 Techmarines must stay there, as well as some other marines to maintain the optimal operational strength of the chapter’s base. This base is divided in different major sectors, each controlled by separated logical engines and cogitators to prevent the entire system of the facility to be shut down by a malfunction or a direct assault. Every section is well defended by patrols of space marines and automated defenses such as tarantula turrets and armored security doors. All around the fortress are located several orbital defense cannons, camouflaged as the rocky surface of the planet to avoid detection and gun the enemy down before they can even see it coming. Due to the planet’s rich mineral resources, the Sentinels can keep all their battle equipment always at the best performance , completely self-sufficiently, as well as having the capabilities to build and craft fresh gear anew, due to the salvaged technology recovered from the ancient factories constructed on the planet before the cataclysm. Combat Doctrine and Famous Battles The Sentinels are well-known for their ability to resolutely hold their position, even when heavily outnumbered. They excel in sieges, as defenders or as attackers as well, taking advantage for their wide choice of heavy weapons and support vehicles, as well as orbital ordnance barrages and demolition tools to destroy the enemy and end battles as fast as possible. During the millennia, however, the chapter had to face situations where it was needed to strike before the enemy did : There the Sentinels make great use of special weapons, jump infantry and vehicles to assail and trample the enemy lines and reach their objective as quick as they can. Bolters and melta weapons are a favorite among the infantry of the chapter, and is not uncommon to see Storm bolters deployed instead of other special weapons, to grant more firepower during assault or flanking maneuvers. Every kind of heavy weapon is equally appreciated, from the simple but deadly heavy bolter, to the devastating Lascannon. The chapter tends to avoid plasma weapons due to their instability and chance to overheat, so they are rarely seen on the battlefield. An uncommon practice of the Sentinels is that also leading units such as captains prefer to deploy with powerful ranged weapons, instead of getting directly into the melee. This initially had been seen as a sign of cowardice by other more conformist chapters, but they soon changed their minds when they witnessed the zeal and fury with wich the Sentinels usually fight their enemies, even from the distance, unleashing the wrath of the Emperor on them. Most of the marines that show a particular interest in technolgy, however, are not sent to train on Mars to become Techmarines (unless they espressly ask for it), but instead beacome what is known as the Ironwatch. This marines are augmented with special bionics and prothesis, that helps them to interface with their new specialistic equipment and wargear wich is given them. This marines are taught to join the machine spirit of their weapon with the one that resides inside the numerous augmentations that are grafted into the body of the fighter, becoming a whole with his own equipment. This soldiers often choose a single weapon, with wich they fight the enemies of the Emperor for the rest of their life. As a result of this "empathic" bond that develops between the marine and their own wargear, the soldier gain special abilities that permit him to fully exploit the power of the machine spirit, unlocking the very potential of the weapon they bring in battle. Many times however, the members of the Ironwatch become very elusive and silent, eclipsing themselves form the life of the chapter, and are seen often repairing their equipment and nursing the needs of the machne spirit of the weapons. During their long service, the Sentinels have shown its true valor and power multiple times. The archives of the chapter are full of reports of great battles where through usage of brilliant tactics and powerful weaponry, or solely with their unmatched determination, they prevailed against a much more numerous enemy or a new terrible threat. Siege of Arkurion Prime, 750 M.33 There, in a conflict lasted three years, the Sentinels repelled the continued attacks from chaos traitors that wanted to take over the entire sector and sacrifice it to their own Dark Gods. Six out of ten companies of the Sentinels were employed during this war, where they led a resolute defense, pushing the enemy back and permitting the population of the sector to safely evacuate. There the great war hero Damios Vanor, with just an handful of hardened veterans, managed to kill the daemon prince that commanded the chaos host and finally drove the enemies away from the sector. After this, the whole population of these planets honors them as their saviors for repelling the attack with so few losses among the civilians. Battle of the Ash Plains 355 M.35 When the powerful Whaaaag! Zteelzkull assaulted the nearby sector of Malidor Tertius, the Sentinels’ battleships engaged battle with the Ork fleet over planet Ides, while at the same time the 3rd and the 9th company of the chapter fought the orks on the surface of the planet itself. During an assault to the ork basecamp led by Captain Kaidan, Veteran instructor sergeant Furius Atlas shoot the Ork leader in the head using his sniper rifle, Silent Judge, causing the remaining ork nobs to disband along with their troops. Again, the Sentinels managed to save the major cities of the planet, rightfully deserving their eternal gratitude. Extermination of Davion III 889 M.35 A strike team, composed by the Terminator Sergeant Aurelius Cade along with his squad, teleports right in the middle of the Ulthwè Eldar troops, fighting to their deaths, thus allowing the 1st and the 2nd company to evacuate the planet Davion III before the incoming Exterminatus. This event was a tragic loss to the chapter, and it’s remembered on the 1st company banner, with all the names of those who died permanently marked on it. The heresy of Dren 111 M.37 Under the command of the traitor marine Dren of the Alpha Legion, the whole system of Moridunum turned to chaos. The Sentinels, along with the chapter of the Death Spectres, after massive bombardments, attacked the traitor troops from two fronts, penetrating into their defenses and finally reaching the chaos commander. There, Honored Brother Furius Atlas, now a Dreadnought, engaged battle with the enemy leader, and ultimately crushed him with his amrored hands, ending his foul existence once and for all. Struggle for the Forge World 753 M.39 As the ork Whaaaag! Bigtrakk menaced to invade Forgeworld Corinthe, the Sentinels challenged the ork horde to confront them on a nearby planet. There Captain Dahl Hammerand of the 8th company led a direct assault to the enemy lines commanding the whole chapter’s biker squadrons, trampling the enemy ranks and blowing up the impressive Battlewagon alongside with warboss Bigtrakk. That was the biggest deploying of motorized troops ever seen in the chapter’s history. Secrets of Tesla Prime 990 M.40 After receiving a signal from a beacon on the surface of Tesla Prime, the space marines of the Sentinels were sent here with a group Techmarines and their Chapter Master Telchar to assess if it was possible to recover some ancient technology or lost equipment. As soon as they landed on the planet, however, the space marines were assaulted by the inhabitants of this dead world: the Necrons. There the Sentinels fought resolutely even being no more than fifty men, and thanks to a brilliant tactic designed on the field by the chapter master himself, they managed to pass though the skeletal horde in order to reach the Necron Lord. Telchar fought the terrible being and prevailed, destroying his enemy with the aid of his relic Bolter, Wrath of the Primarchs, causing the Necron army to teleport away. Unfortunately Techmarine Daecius was severely injured, as he was acting as a diversion to draw the Necron’ s attention and save his brothers, and didn’t survive the battle. He is now remembered in the Halls of glory of the chapter for his paragon sacrifice, as a hero of the chapter. Capitular Organisation The Sentinels agree to respect Guilliman’s Codex Astartes, but show some divergences in their capitular organisation. Capitular headquarters – Composed of Chapter master Telchar, alongside his counsellors Master Artificer Tyrian (the senior Master of the forge) and Ancient Scar (the Chapter’s standard bearer), includes Grand Master Arkar of the Ironwatch and nine chosen élite soldiers, who are the Honour Guard and protect the Chapter master; a Land Raider (Shield of Mankind) is also deployed to serve as dedicated transport. Armoury – Called The Arsenal, is much more vast than other chapters’, including the two other Masters of the Forge (a total of 3, one senior and two junior), 50 Techmarines (almost as many as the Iron Hands), more than 200 servitors and an impressive number of vehicles: 20 Predators, 10 Vindicators, 15 Whirlwhinds and 10 Land Raiders, rivaling the major chapters’ own armoury. Apothecarion – Unchanged, Master Apothecary Darius Argentus and 12 Apothecaries, dispatched to each company. Librarius – Minor deviances from the Codex. Chief Librarian Tiberius Storm, 3 Epistolaries, 8 Codiciers, 10 Lexicanii and Master Scribe Meridius. Ironwatch and Reclusium– The Ironwatch is a special wing of the chapter, composed of soldiers augmented with bionics and various prthesis, that battle the enemy with powerful weapons and armors. Their number varies between 15 to 30 veterans, divided in squads of 5 marines each (or less). The Chaplains are replaced by the Ironwatch masters, who basically have the same functions, and also aid the Techmarines blessing the wargear before going to battle. Battle and Reserve Companies – Almost as written in the Codex Astartes. The 1st company is composed by the veterans of the chapter and includes two Venerable Dreadnoughts (Venerable Brother Furius Atlas and Brother Elijah); under the orders of the Commander-Captain Maximus Octavian. The companies from the 2nd to the 5th are the Battle Companies, while the companies from the 6th to the 9th are the Reserve Companies, each led by a Captain. The 10th Company is the one completely composed by scouts, and is led by Veteran Commander Severus Turian, the most experienced of all the captains (excluding Commander Octavian), who is committed to train the new recruits under his commands. Fleet – It is similar to a normal Space Marine fleet, including Escort vessels such as Gladius and Nova frigates, some Hunter Destroyers, and Strike Cruisers. The chapter possess three Space Marine Battle Barges, and one of them is very ancient: named The Relic of the Primarchs, it has seen over eight millenia of wars and is revered as one of the chapter's most sacred relic. Beliefs and Creed The Sentinels own creed might seem similar to the one of other Space Marines chapters. As the others, they consider the Emperor not as a god, but instead as the greatest of mankind: they do not follow him because they are told to do so, but because they respect him for his actions and his deeds, that united almost all the galaxy under a single flag : that of the Imperium. As the Emperor built the Imperium with great crusades, wich led to terrible bloodsheds, the Sentinels believe that their duty is to keep this together, defending it from all the menaces wich threaten to damage an already fragile peace. This might have been true once, but now, when the entire galaxy is at war, the Sentinels primary concern is to defend who is not capable of doing it by himself, resolutely confronting the enemy on the battlefield without giving them anything if not an avalanche of bullets and fire. They believe that every person in the Imperium is equal, no matter if rich or poor, man or woman, human or not, and so they fight for their right to live in peace and not haunted by the concern of being dead or alive the next day. When the Sentinels embark on a mission, their primary objective is always to save more lives as possible. No matter what, they will always fight to death if there is even the scarcest possibility to rescue the emperor’s people. This caused many conflicts with other imperial organisations, such as the Inquisition and the Ecclesiarchy, the former because of their harsh methods, that often prefer to destroy an entire world without even thinking to its population; while the latter accuse the chapter of lack of faith. The current Chapter master, Telchar, is the incarnation of all those ideals. During the several centuries of his service he proved this more than just in a few occasions: many times he stepped in personally to block the enemy advance and permit the civilians to evacuate, or to drive the hostile hordes back from a besieged city; he risked his life several times in such a way, but his immense will and incredible determination allowed him to continue to lead this ancient chapter to victory, once again. Battle Cry B) “Be strong! For the Imperium, and the Mankind!” As the pledge they made millennia ago, also their battle cry remained unchanged. It is usually shouted at the beginning of the battle, when charging the enemy, or when the Devastators begin to shoot on the incoming foes. Every marine shouts this all together with the others, resulting in a powerful battle cry that instills the fear in the hearts of their opponent. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well, that's all. I hope to recieve your feedback soon. If something is unlcear, feel free to ask. I think that after some revisions i'll be creating rules for the Ironowatch and the other heroes of the chapter, too. :truly optimistic face: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/219551-ia-the-sentinels/ Share on other sites
NightrawenII
Welcome in the Liber... now onto massacre C&C. ;) Origins and Gene Seed It is stated in the Imperial Archives that it was founded during the mid M.32, as part of the 5th foundation... - Founding It is not stated however of whose Primarch was the gene seed that originated the chapter itself. - Okey, it is very very unlikely for Chapter to not know its gene-seed. For variety of reasons. The most important amongst them is the bond they share with the Chapters of the same gene-line and their genetical father, the Primarch. - 2nd, I sense great disturbance in the Force Warp. The Apotecaries established that there is no sign of mutation in the gene pattern of the Sentinels, except for the natural predisposition in the new initiates to develop psychic powers, a trait that they share with the chapter of the Blood Ravens. - Yep, there it is. NO. The only gene-seed affecting the development of psychic powers was the one of Thousands Sons and you really really don't want to be associated with them or with cliche-bags of Blood Ravens. Once again, for variety of reasons. - The reason for Blood Ravens larger librarium is unknown. The Apothecarion ultimately stated that the two chapter’s gene seed is the same and that it doesn’t belong to any of the known Primarchs; it is possible however that during the time elapsed from the original foundation, the gene seed had somehow suffered some changes, and that was then used to create the two chapters. This, however is just a conjecture and no real proofs support this thesis. *Screams in Agony* - Leave. The. Blood. Ravens. Out. Of. This. Please. :( With the above you managed to break my Suspension of Disbelief without fail. I don't know what is the purpose of this, but it's epic fail in any way. Let see what is next... Homeworld and Capitular Fortress A terrible warp storm infested the entire sector, unleashing cataclysm of enormous proportions on the worlds on its path. The whole planet was devastated by the foul energies of warp, cracking the entire surface of the world itself and covering it with rifts and scars. All the living beings were exterminated and, once the storm ended, nothing was left behind but a dead world. Fortunately, the chapter managed to escape and also rescued some settlers aboard their battleships , but the majority of the population of the sector was wiped out by the warp storm. - Ahem, the "Warp Storm" you have seen in the Dawn of War is in fact Warp Rift or something like that. Warpstorms are actually storms in the Warp and the real space is largely unnaffected. - "Sector" is area of space with the shape of cube with sides 200 light years long. It's freaking huge, what you have there is probably (solar) system. Ahem, you know the Homeworld section is the part of the IA where you tell us about culture of the Chapter's homeworld, their traditions and customs and how this affects the Chapter. There is also place to tell us about recruitment of the neophytes if its uniqueness warrant the readers attention. And you have there purposeless story(=> if there is any purpose, I can't see it.) about destruction of the planet. And some nice and useless decrption of Chapter F-M. My question is what this all adds to your Chapter's character or nature? Hint: nothing  Combat Doctrine and Famous Battles They excel in sieges and attrition battles, taking advantage for their wide choice of heavy weapons and support vehicles, as well as orbital ordnance barrages and demolition tools. - Yeah, yeah... NO. The marines are Elite Strike Force. "Hit fast, hit hard" and all the Rock'n'Roll. It's job of Imperial Guard to hold the postions and die fighting. - 2nd, the marines simply don't have the tools nor supplies to fight in the sieges or attrition battles. This marines follow a special training and ultimately become the chapter’s pride, the Ironwatch, implacable soldiers with an incredible martial ability, increased by their psychic powers, but at the same time less vulnerable to the Warp than a Librarian, because they do not draw the energy from the Warp itself to feed their powers, but from their natural inner energy. - Sorry man, but chakra doesn't exist in this Universe. :o Though they not possess the same power as a Space Marine Librarian, they are still giants among the others, as Space Marines are among the normal humans. - I smell MISS!(=Me, I'm So Super!) here. Mostly nothing new under sun, just re-packaged. The Siege/Attrition and Ironwatch aspect is outright wrong, though. Capitular Organisation The Sentinels agree to respect Guilliman’s Codex Astartes, but show some major divergences in their capitular organisation. - Ahem, outside the ironwatch and absence of Reclusium, I can't see any major divergence. Reclusium – The Sentinels do not follow the canon “faith” in the Emperor, so they do not have any Chaplain at all; their loyalty to the Emperor and to Mankind is preserved by the Ironwatch, that act as caretakers of the spiritual needs of the other brothers, and ultimately by their own creed and belief system (explained better later) wich rejects any kind of religion. - Nope. *For the canon faith in the Emperor see below.* The Chaplains are keepers of Chapter's traditions, rites and customs. In addtion, they are spiritual link to the Emperor. No sane Chapter will leave this task in the hands of psykers. Actually the opposite, the Chaplains will be required to keep an eye on your witch-brethen, because if anything the psyker is untrustworthy and dangerous. Beliefs and Creed The Sentinels own creed is very uncommon among the Space Marines. First of all, they consider the Emperor not as a god, but instead as the greatest of mankind - I LOLed very hard. Do you know why? Because all (with some exceptions) Chapters don't revere Emperor as a God. They have their own belief system. B) They believe that every person in the Imperium is equal, no matter if rich or poor, man or woman, human or not, and so they fight for their right to live in peace and not haunted by the concern of being dead or alive the next day. - A dreadful question of Liber make appearance at last: WHY? When the Sentinels embark on a mission, their primary objective is always to save more lives as possible. No matter what, they will always fight to death if there is even the scarcest possibility to rescue the emperor’s people. *terrifying music* - WHY? ++++++ Overall: I think this IA is simply missed opportunity. Some of the parts work well or could work well with additional attention. However, there are parts, a major parts no less, that don't mesh well with the "shared" universe or are outright fallacious. Edit: Also, the "Sentinels" is rather plain name. Try add some adjective. WH40778
Well, this caught me by surprise. But since this is the good part of the feedbacks, i'll take your hint and try again. Let's see what I can do here... I see, probably all this mess is caused by my "not as good as i thought" knowledge of the Space Marines history. - Okey, it is very very unlikely for Chapter to not know its gene-seed. For variety of reasons. The most important amongst them is the bond they share with the Chapters of the same gene-line and their genetical father, the Primarch. Ok,ok, my new Primarch will be there soon. I'll choose one that i like. - 2nd, I sense great disturbance in the Force Warp. Meditate on this, I will. - Yep, there it is. NO. The only gene-seed affecting the development of psychic powers was the one of Thousands Sons and you really really don't want to be associated with them or with cliche-bags of Blood Ravens. Once again, for variety of reasons.- The reason for Blood Ravens larger librarium is unknown. Well then, no more Blood Ravens. And so no more extended librarium. Their gene seed will be changed into something better. *Screams in Agony*- Leave. The. Blood. Ravens. Out. Of. This. Please. I swear. With the above you managed to break my Suspension of Disbelief without fail. I don't know what is the purpose of this, but it's epic fail in any way. Let see what is next... Didn't completely understand this...you are telling me that i write this terrible? :o - Ahem, the "Warp Storm" you have seen in the Dawn of War is in fact Warp Rift or something like that. Warpstorms are actually storms in the Warp and the real space is largely unnaffected.- "Sector" is area of space with the shape of cube with sides 200 light years long. It's freaking huge, what you have there is probably (solar) system. Warp storms are quoted in the WH40k 4th edition manual, and I actually meant sector. But maybe you're right, let's reduce it to a single system. Also, i didn't even think to DOW to figure this out. Hint: nothing I agree. I completely forgot to add the cultural part (even though i've tought that i did). My fault, I'll add it later. Mostly nothing new under sun, just re-packaged. The Siege/Attrition and Ironwatch aspect is outright wrong, though. I admit that i've exxaggerated it a bit. A classic attrition war is actually longer that what i meant. The super-super-human problem is resolved with the previous measure: no more psykers than normal, so the Ironwatch is just super-ultra-mega veteran marines. - Sorry man, but chakra doesn't exist in this Universe. I don't even believe that chakra exist! You're right. Didn't even think at this aspect. I'll say that there are Chaplains, and that are the leaders of the Ironwatch (like the Blood Angels' Death Company) - I LOLed very hard. Do you know why? Because all (with some exceptions) Chapters don't revere Emperor as a God. They have their own belief system. Noticed this a few hours after posting this, while reading the 4th ed. wh40k manual. Remove this. ;) - A dreadful question of Liber make appearance at last: WHY?+ *terrifying music* - WHY? Simply you didn't expect an we-are-here-to-defend-you chapter, didn't you? (I don't believe this is such a terrible thing however) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After all, i've made quite a mess, but you say that other things are good. Please tell me what it is, so i can keep it and change the malfunctioning parts. Thanks for the feedback, it seems that i've much to learn. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/219551-ia-the-sentinels/#findComment-2619236 Share on other sites
Captain Juan Juarez
Suspension of Disbelief is something we all experience. It's that feeling that, although this is all fiction and totally impossible, it's believeable; when you shatter that belief, then it's bad for your IA and can make something that is a decent start seem bad. Chapter Master Ignis Domus
First off, welcome to the Liber, please read the guides on the way in, and yes, I do accept credit cards. :D The Sentinels are a quite uncommon chapter, since they believe that every Imperium citizen is equal and that their duty is to protect them, no matter the cost, to keep the Imperium itself strong in such a dark age. Marines are not "nice". They are brutal, superhuman killing machines, psycho-conditioned to be cruel and unfeeling. We are not teddy bears with lollipops. Though that would be cool. Very little is known about the past of this chapter. It is stated in the Imperial Archives that it was founded during the mid M.32, as part of the 5th foundation, and then was sent to the Segmentum Ultima, to protect the remote human colonies in the Dominion of Storms from the unknown menaces that could come from the uncharted space of the Eastern Fringe, wich even the Light of the Astronomican could not reach. It is not stated however of whose Primarch was the gene seed that originated the chapter itself. Alright: 1. 5th founding, not Foundation. Even though Aasimov is the Emperor, the Foundation trilogy is not the Codex Astartes. The Apotecaries established that there is no sign of mutation in the gene pattern of the Sentinels, except for the natural predisposition in the new initiates to develop psychic powers, a trait that they share with the chapter of the Blood Ravens. End it! Now! Before it's too late! And it's Apothecaries. You just missed the 'h'. This brought the Sentinels and the Blood Ravens to share their own historical archives to discover more about their origin, however this granted just little disclosures about their own story. The Apotecarion ultimately stated that the two chapter’s gene seed is the same and that it doesn’t belong to any of the known Primarchs; it is possible however that during the time elapsed from the original foundation, the gene seed had somehow suffered some changes, and that was then used to create the two chapters. This, however is just a conjecture and no real proofs support this thesis. See both points above. I recommend rethinking the whole section. As soon as the Sentinels came to the Dominion of Storms, they settled on the planet Ultima Thule, calling it their home from that time on. And the Dominion is what? A terrible warp storm invested the entire sector, unleashing cataclysm of enormous proportions on the worlds on its path. Even though the cataclysms shattered their homeworld, the Sentinels still use it as their base of operations, where they coordinate the defense of all the nearby sectors, that were left untouched by the tempests. I agree with whats-his-name. Change it to system. Sectors are a bit too big. You could do multiple systems, but no sectors. I like the fortress. Two things, though. Two companies is a full fifth of the chapter's strength. You aren't going to ant them on garrison duty. Marines Attack! Attack! Attack!, not Defend! Defend! Defend!. Also, there's only one Master of the Forge. He's not going to stay there his whole time. That's a waste of a valuable asset. I like this, too. My only problem is that you haven't really described their world and the people of it. Since they don't have people on their world, try a brief description of a few prominent recruitment planets. As expected from a chapter with such origins, wich was created with the purpose to defend an protect, the Sentinels are well-known for their ability to resolutely hold their position, even when heavily outnumbered. They excel in sieges and attrition battles, taking advantage for their wide choice of heavy weapons and support vehicles, as well as orbital ordnance barrages and demolition tools. During the millennia, however, the chapter had to face situations where it was needed to strike before the enemy did : There the Sentinels make great use of special weapons, jump infantry and vehicles to assail and trample the enemy lines and reach their objective as quick as they can. As stated above, Marines are an offensive force. Also, they don't participate in battles of attrition. You can't when you only have about 1,500 marines. Try reading the Thousand Marine Myth if you're confused about numbers. Unfortunately, the Librarium is going to be down soon, so best read it quickly. Here's the link. I like the captain thing. It makes a lot more sense then melee monkeys. Due to the natural insurgence of psychic powers in the new recruits, and thinking that having too many librarians might have been a danger for the entire chapter, those who reveal to be psykers are trained to use passively their powers, rather than as a weapon, as a defense. Once again, dump the Blood Ravens at the nearest gas station. Though they not possess the same power as a Space Marine Librarian, they are still giants among the others, as Space Marines are among the normal humans. We are not ninjas, nor are we Magnus the Reds. I don't recommend the Ironwatch or really big marines. I see super marines. Try including some horrid defeats. The Sentinels agree to respect Guilliman’s Codex Astartes, but show some major divergences in their capitular organisation. What divergences? Also, I might vary your words. You seem to really like capitular. Whoah there Nellie! If you have more Land Raiders, Vindicators, and other vehicles than any Former Legion or Second Founding chapter, you have a problem. Tone down the Supermarines. Librarius – Minor deviances from the Codex. Chief Librarian Tiberius Storm, 3 Epistolaries, 8 Codiciers, 10 Lexicanii and Master Scribe Meridius. What deviancies? Reclusium – The Sentinels do not follow the canon “faith” in the Emperor, so they do not have any Chaplain at all; their loyalty to the Emperor and to Mankind is preserved by the Ironwatch, that act as caretakers of the spiritual needs of the other brothers, and ultimately by their own creed and belief system (explained better later) wich rejects any kind of religion. Chapters have Chaplains or an equivalent. Period. Also, see Nightraven's comments on the belief system. Ironwatch – It is a special company of Space Marines whose innate psychic powers have been trained to bolster their martial abilities and physical features, transforming them into very powerful warriors. The Ironwatch is in charge for keeping the chapter’s morale high by their own example. They have access to special weapons and equipment and are revered by all the other members of the chapter. The number of the Sentinels that serve in the Ironwatch varies much, but generally is a number between 20 and 30 marines that are divided in teams composed by 5 soldiers (or less, if there are not enough to create a complete team). Once again, we aren't ninjas. Fleet – Another exception from the Codex is the Sentinels’ space fleet. It is similar to a normal Space Marine fleet, including Escort vessels such as Gladius and Nova frigates, some Hunter Destroyers, and Strike Cruisers; but instead of having two or three Space Marines Battle barges, as it is typical among the other chapters, the Sentinels possess an incredible Ark Mechanicus: a immense battleship, gifted them by the Adeptus Mechanicus after retrieving it form a space hulk for them. Re-adapted to act as a Battle Barge and renamed Relic of the Primarchs, it is the Chapter’s greatest pride and it’s righteously feared by the enemies of the Imperium. Uh, uh, uh. No super vessels. The Mechanicus would never give out such a highly valued and incredibly high tech vessel for a relatively minor service. Also, if the Mechanicus intended to give them it, why have them retrieve it if it brings no profit? See Nightraven's beliefs comments and my first comment. Good job! This is very, very hard, and even if you're absolutely sure of not having any problems, something always creeps up. Captain Juan Juarez
The Sentinels are a quite uncommon chapter, since they believe that every Imperium citizen is equal and that their duty is to protect them, no matter the cost, to keep the Imperium itself strong in such a dark age. Marines are not "nice". They are brutal, superhuman killing machines, psycho-conditioned to be cruel and unfeeling. We are not teddy bears with lollipops. Though that would be cool. Except the Salamanders and, to a lesser extent, the Space Wolves. WH40778
Auuuuugh! Please give me some time...I'm now changing the Original Post. I'll include a changelog to see what i changed (duh) Thanks for the feedback anyway. I like to see that you liked at least a part of it. PS: didn't include major defeats because they are not a good thing to remember into the "Famous Battles" section Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/219551-ia-the-sentinels/#findComment-2619327 Share on other sites
Captain Juan Juarez
But even the Salamanders aren't as nice as these guys. Salamanders don't go citizens first, war second. Read Helsreach, you'll find they do. EDIT: Some battles are famous as defeats, but generally a Battles section is superfluous information in an IA; get the base right before adding topping. Chapter Master Ignis Domus
But that's a biased point of view. It makes perfect sense for them to want to defend their base of operations against the Orks. Plus, they probably figured that the Templars had the offense in hand when they charged forward. It makes perfect sense for them to want to defend their base of operations against the Orks. Plus, they probably figured that the Templars had the offense in hand when they charged forward. How so? They turned from a conclusive victory, instead choosing to take a partial one to protect civilians; nothing biased about that. WH40778
Update complete and changelog added. Tell me if I've missed something (or if now is even worse than before :tu:) I don't think there is need to discuss if the Salamanders are nice or not (I think they are). Feedback! Chapter Master Ignis Domus
They sacrificed a conclusive victory from the Templar point of view. From the Salamander point of view, the odds may have been too much for it to be worth it, there may have been a threat unseen by the Templars, etc. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/219551-ia-the-sentinels/#findComment-2619369 Share on other sites
Captain Juan Juarez
They sacrificed a conclusive victory from the Templar point of view. From the Salamander point of view, the odds may have been too much for it to be worth it, there may have been a threat unseen by the Templars, etc. A conclusive victory under those conditions is not subject to the Chapter one belongs to; with the Salamnders they could have destroyed the attacking Orks in their entirety, without them they lacked the numbers. The Salamanders stated that they could not leave the civilians unprotected, which - oddly enough - wraps up my argument conclusively. Captain Juan Juarez
Changed the Attriition thinghy. Anyway, thanks for your concern, but I know my numbers very well :D . I'd say that my chapter will be around 1000-1100 total members (a normal chapter, actually :tu: ). If you can plausibly explain it, 1500 Marines isn't such a huge number - I am aware some Frater would probably consider that around the actual average, myself included, because I consider Rhino drivers and Thunderhawk pilots seperate (even if I am aware maybe I shouldn't). EDIT: But the citizens were at a bastion of safety. Protecting the citizens means protecting the bastion. If you lose the bastion, you're stuck there, near the Ork horde, with no safe point near. WH40778
Don't worry, i did. I was referring to fighting space marines , including vehicle crew (as I also mentioned, the 10th company is not 100 marines strong) and excluding fleet and aerial support pilots and any kind of servitor I know that there are a lot of other members like Non-Astartes, Navigators, et similia. Don't misundertand me, i already know this because of the Space Marine codices. It's all written in there. :tu: EDIT: originally referring Ignis Domus, now to both Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/219551-ia-the-sentinels/#findComment-2619398 Share on other sites
Captain Juan Juarez
Fine. A tenable position of not instant death. :tu: Now you're just being awkward - my job, incidentally - the fact is the Salamanders refused to fully engage because of the civilians, which cost the a decisive edge to the victory. Also, the Salamanders live in and around the peoples of Nocturne and are renowned humanitarians. EDIT: I actually mean 1500 combatants; Command echelon Marines, specialists, Companies, Scouts and Dreadnoughts. Chapter Master Ignis Domus
But not so reknowned as to sacrifice a battle to save grandma Edna whose house is being burned by rabid Chaos monkeys. The Helsreach thing was a matter of battle strategy. Salamanders are more conservative, while Black Remplars are reckless charge forward types. EDIT: Missed the IA author. I suppose he's important. :whistling: I'm talking about a paper strength chapter. And the codex actually contradicts itself on numbers. It says one thousand marines per chapter and 100 marines per company. There are actually 107 marines per company, vehicle crews, etc. not included. Then you have the 98 chapter HQ marines(I think honor guard are no longer spread among companies), vehicle crews, and the marines stationed aboard ships, which is a fact established by several prominent fluff sources. Again, this reasoning is explained better and in more detail in that article.
