subtlebrush
@Brax: I know what you mean. I'm weird when it comes to me hand painting numbers or letters. As long as everyone else likes it then I'm fine with it haha. @SirTainly: Thank you very much. I had some doubts about it when I first started since it was something I had never done before but like you said I think I toned them down well enough. And a small update: El Capitano Front Side I began working on the Captain last night and I seem to be stuck. I need your input here brothers. What should I do with his cloak/cape? I was thinking a darker yellow on the inside to show his 2nd Company colors and maybe a very dark green on the outside and if I dare say.... a Salamander decal on it :) I want the cape to not overwhelm the green of the armour if you get my drift. I'm also adding the red to his "chest rope" and his relic blade/power sword (depending on what mood I'm in :)) Let me know your thoughts. subtlebrush
Small update: First, where are you guys? I need help on that Captain's cloak :( Let me know your thoughts please. Second, I was trudging through my old bitz box and found a little gem from my younger days when Codex: Space Marines had the Traits system. I had originally bought him just cause he looked sweet. He has always been one of my favorite space marine models and I hadn't noticed till now but check out his allegiance on the left shoulder pad..... If you cant tell he is designated Salamanders! Now he has to be in my newest army. So in a few days he will take a thinner bath and will be reborn with a nice new crisp paint job of the Salamanders 2nd Company. I love finding stuff like this. Just saved me the money of having to buy another Librarian ;) I should have some more guys done in the next few so give me some suggestions cloak wise and I will feed you more updates :tu: Mr.Malevolent Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/219555-lpc-2011-little-green-men/page/2/#findComment-2628303 Share on other sites
Seahawk
I can picture it now: Â Poor ol' Mr. Tiggums gets the acid bath. "Aaagh, it burns! It's horrible and aaaa - ooh look, I'm shiny now!" Â For the captain's cloak, it depends on the material I suppose. I like doing black leather with a Shadow Grey highlight (cool tone) and black cottony stuff with a Codex Grey highlight (warm tone). I think a cool tone would work best for him. subtlebrush
Thanks Seahawk! Yeah I've been leaning towards a leathery black and doing the inside a darker yellow. Hell I might just make the whole cloak leathery black cause I have a feeling the yellow on the inside would be way too much. I think a cool tone would work best for him. XKhalilX
Malevolent, yeah those are the pens. Sharpie makes micro pens now. I use them, but real micropens may come in even smaller tips im sure. I always have troubles with the eye lenses, you think a micro pen would work? and where can you get micro pens? Â you should turn that librarian into Pyriel or Velcona. A bit too veteran of the Librarius to become Dakir. Dakir would be a fun bits conversion! Nick Kyme is an amazing write, i think the Tome of Fire series is the best Black Library books outside the Horus Heresy. They are superb. I was never a big fan of the Salamanders, their paint scheme, the weird black skin red eye thing. but after reading book I, i just loved the characters. I cannot wait till book III, I just finished Firedrake a couple weeks ago. I love how even someone as embittered as Tsu'gan has compassion for humans as the salamder ethic. They all show compassion in different ways and Kyme really captures that. Â I marked the thread to keep a watch. if you do some termies, definitely make sure you do Tsu'gan and the rest of the boys from the first :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/219555-lpc-2011-little-green-men/page/2/#findComment-2629207 Share on other sites
subtlebrush
Thanks XKhalilX. Â I didn't know Sharpie made anything small to be honest. The problem with eyes is getting the right consistency to not overwhelm the eye with color and to not leave too little to make no effect. So technically, practice, practice and practice haha. As far as using a marker, give it a try and see what you get. I've never tried it and I'd like to see what you get. Oh and to get the Micron pens try any art or hobby store they should have them. Â I think after I get these initial Battle For Black Pass minis out of the way (and finsih my LPC) I'll start to focus on converting characters and units. I see this as my trial by fire, getting the colors right and the technique down and THEN I'm gonna have fun converting units and characters. However I will probably base the librarian as either Pyriel or Velcona as it requires no conversion work haha. Don't worry I have some big ideas for the Salamanders 2nd Company just need the money to do so.... subtlebrush
Quick Update:  So as anyone who has been following this blog knows, I played my first game in over 4 years last night. In actuality I played two games one being amazing and one being just plain horrible. My opponent was my wife's cousin who has been into the miniatures hobbies a bit longer then myself and like me hasn't played a game of 40k in as many years. He chose the Orks, which left me with my Salamanders   First Battle Salamanders Full Tactical Squad Sergeant with Power Fist and Plasma Pistol Flamer Missile Launcher Orks 2 Ten man Slugga Mobz 2 Nobz with 'Uge Choppas Each mob has 1 Big Shoota  Set-Up So the game was set up with my Tactical Squad 12" into the table placed conveniently snug against a nice large piece of the crashed Aquilla lander terrain in the middle of the table. He chose to place the Orks to the left and to the right of my position about 14" away or more (I cant remember exactly how far away he was but it was enough to take 3 turns to hit my front line) . I won the roll to go first but I decided to go second instead.  Turn 1 His first action was to move forward with both units, the unit to my right sped straight towards me while the unit on the other side of the terrain piece RAN trying to flank me as fast as possible. His shooting phase involved his one Big Shoota Boy blasting away and only wounding one Marine which I managed to save. I decide not to move my squad and lay into his approaching squad with bolter superiority. I picked off three Boyz with bolters, however the missle launcher went wide <_< and the flamer was not yet in range.  Turn 2 The Orks proceeded to close the gap some more. The unit directly in front of me came within 12" while the other unit trudged around the terrain some more and he decide to Waaagh! hoping he could close the distance even more. The unit directly in front of me moved an extra 3" and the terrain unit moved an extra 2". Then came my turn. The Sergeant reduced a Boy to a puddle of green with his plasma pistol while the Flamer scorched 3 more into piles of burning flesh. The rest of the squad rapid fired with all seven bolters managing to pick apart six more Boyz and even wounded the Nob! Then to put the cherry on the cake I launched a Krak missile at the remaining Nob. The missile hit BUT must have hit a foot in front of him as I failed to wound :o  Turn 3 The lone Nob moved closer and the other squad edged closer even partially moving through the terrain to get to my squad. The shooting phase was started with the lone Nob taking his chance and missing with his Slugga. The Slugga Boyz on my left opened fire with their Sluggas and managed a few wounds between them and the Big Shoota however I saved all. Then came the assault phase. The lone Nob charged in and managed to cleave the flamer marine in half with his 'Uge Choppa. Two marines struck back with the butt of their bolters but failed to wound. However the Sergeant stepped forward challenging the Nob before ripping one of his arms off in a spray of blood and then proceeded to pound the fallen Nobz skull back into its torso. On the other side of the squad the Orks, wooping and hollering managed to strike down two marines catching their cleavers in armour joins. The remaining marines stabbed and gutted four Boyz with their combat knives pushing the mob back. Losing the combat the Orks couldn't hold their ground and fled back over the downed Aquilla Lander before the Marines proceeded to catch the fleeing Orks, bolters pounding into their backs and ultimately winning me the game.  WIN FOR ME! Closing thoughts: Marines are HARD! With Orks or any C.C. oriented army: Make them come to you and make them regret it! I loathe missile launchers  Now as far as game two went I can just say this, I have no idea what I was doing. We played with the full forces provided by the boxed set. I was still on a high from winning the first game and just over thought my strategy completely (or lack of strategy). We played the game with the Dawn Of War scenario. For some stupid reason I placed my squad in Combat Patrol with the Captain and placed them right up front in the middle of the board while my Termies waited in reserve and I placed my Dread in the open. My rolls were horrible, nothing could see past 9" and anything that could see like the Dread missed and then was basted to high hell by the Deffcoptas -_- It was horrible. All my rolls were 1's and 2's so that meant nothing hit at all, we concluded it to the dice I used (they have always been "cursed" and I knew I shouldn't have used them but I did). He steamrolled me in two turns. It hurt so bad....  Loss Closing thoughts: MAKE THEM COME TO YOU AND MAKE THEM REGRET IT! Keep Termies on the table next time Get some new dice  So that was my experience. Winning my first game in years was such a joy. I dont mind losing though but by the emperor that second battle was pathetic. However I can learn more from losing then winning so when I get my re-match later this week maybe I can do better. Hope you all enjoyed.  Mr.Malevolent Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/219555-lpc-2011-little-green-men/page/2/#findComment-2632275 Share on other sites
subtlebrush
Progress so far..... Been working away on my Tactical marines so I figured I'd do a group shot. Did some more work on the Captain. I decided to go the leather cloak route and painted the highlights the same as his face but then washed continually with Badab Black to get the right look I wanted. I gave him a burnt red hair color as I always imagined Salamanders with burnt red hair. I also think Tsu'Gan was described with a burnt red goatee or maybe I'm just imagining things ;) Anyways hope you all like what I've done so far. I was going to work on the Captain a bit more, maybe finish his backpack but I'm feeling too tired to paint after work. I'm sure I'll finish him tomorrow. Comments and concerns are always welcome! GooseDaMoose
Still lookin' goooood! :) But with a force like the Salamanders I would expect some scaly goodness greenstuff conversions! XKhalilX
Mal, i got the taymiyya maroon spray paint that you suggested. its on its way ;) got a question, its a bit silly but do you prime the minis first before sprayin them or is the maroon taymiyya spray the actual primer in and of itself? I hope that makes sense. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/219555-lpc-2011-little-green-men/page/2/#findComment-2641149 Share on other sites
subtlebrush
@Reyner: Thanks brother! Â @GooseDaMoose: I know, I know I think once these are done and I start to focus on detailing every individual marine I'll get some scales in there. Oh and keep your eyes open cause I should have another W.I.P. started for my favorite cannibals very very soon :D Â @XKhalilX: Sweet. Yes I undercoat them first with white primer. I haven't tried it without priming them first. I'd say give it a try on a crap test mini first just so you don't ruin your marines. Let me know how the Maroon comes out. Â As far as an update I don't have much. Still staring at the Captains back banner trying to visualize what I want... I started work on a few more marines but with work and the purchase of a new X-Box 360 I've been glued to replaying Gears Of War 1 and 2 :P I should have an actual picture update tomorrow and the start of a new blog focused on my favorite anarchist cannibals. Cheers! Â Â Â Mr.Malevolent Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/219555-lpc-2011-little-green-men/page/2/#findComment-2642266 Share on other sites
