My LPC WIP thread

So here's my WIP thread for the Librarian Painting Challenge. I've elected to do a full Assault Squad, as well as nine Librarians. Why nine? The Lords of Oblivion are a very psyker-heavy Chapter (At full strength, their Librarium is typically three times the size of a normal Chapter's, and is practically a Company on its own), so I wanted a "realistic" number of them to go with my full Battle Company, as well as give me all the options I could want in terms of abilities, wargear, etc.

Ultimately, I'll have the following:

-Two Lexicanii, one with a force weapon, one with a psychic hood (since my homegrown 'dex allows for taking them with one or the other).

-Three Codiciers, one with force weapon/bolt pistol, one with force weapon/plasma pistol, and one with force weapon/bolt pistol/jump pack.

-Two Epistolaries in Terminator armor, one with storm shield, one without.

-The Chief Librarian (who has his own rules in my homegrown 'dex, but otherwise is in PA with a a force weapon/bolt pistol). This is the only one that's already done.

-A Codicier mounted on a bike.

-One more I haven't decided on yet. Maybe one with Runic/Artificer Armor for when I play with the SW rules.

Anyway, here's the WIP pics.

Mostly just priming and a couple details done, still need to do the bulk of the painting. The metal got the bluish hue by painting Regal Blue first, then drybrushing the Boltgun Metal over it. I decided to give the guy with the flamer two hand-flamers to represent that for some dual-wielding hotness (see what I did there?).

Librarians:

The Terminator fellow took some damage, so I need to fix him up. Probably going to re-paint the tabard to be more consistent with the other two. His force weapon is different from the other two, in this case it's more bluish steel with gold force coils (I found the red and glowing blue doesn't work as well for the thinner coils on the newer models). Fortunately all three mostly just need some detail-work and highlighting, then post-production (i.e. varnishing and basing) to wrap them up. I also have the Space Hulk Librarian (whose left arm is currently missing, otherwise I'd have included him) that's about half-done, the other five are being done from scratch (four are still in the mail and I need to build the biker one. Still looking for inspiration on that one).

I did a little greenstuffing on the two in PA, since they both technically have their pistols in their holsters (and really that lets them count as bolt or plasma pistols). The middle one, I tried to sculpt and paint it so it looks like he's holding a blue fireball, with some hot blue flames coming up from it. I'm thinking I need to cut into it some more, and make the colors more vertical streaks. The one on the right, I wanted to do it to look like he's conjuring a blue ball of energy (hadoken!), complete with glowing effects on his palm and fingers. Apparently both are a little fuzzy because of the camera focusing on their main bodies, whoops.

Oh hey, I actually got something done. I should probably stop distracting myself with the non-40K painting projects I'm doing, though those are proving extremely useful (as they're practice models for learning new techniques, some of which could apply here). Anyway, here's the pics.

Assault Squad:

Got the Foundation coats down for the blue and green, which I'll follow up with the standard Ultramarines Blue and Dark Angels Green to bring out the real colors, and then move on from there. I wanted to paint in all the X's on these Blood Angel bitz (which are normally red on black for Death Company stuff), so I went with blue on black, i.e. matching the Chapter's heraldry (and possibly doing white in the crevices, rather than leaving them black). However, I'm not 100% sure those are the right colors, it kinda feels like they're too different from the rest of the scheme, so I'm wondering if I should paint them in different colors. Perhaps white on green? That would match the rest of the armor much more closely (though be a little harder to paint).

Librarians:

Not much done here, other than some clean-up, especially on Helcate (the one on the right), as well as repainting his face and fixing chipped paint. Unfortunately, I realized after taking the picture that yet more paint chipped off. Have I mentioned how much I hate metal models?

I've also received two of the four Librarians I've ordered in the mail, and primed them, but otherwise haven't done anything with them yet. Still trying to decide what I want to do with the biker one, haven't seen much to really inspire me yet...

Blah, this is going a bit slower than I had hoped. Dern college.

Anyway, I still have SOME kind of an update, in that I've complete the proper Dark Angels Green on the whole Assault Squad, as well as the Ultramarines Blue on three guys. I'll finish up the blue on the rest of the squad, and, after that, probably work on the white trim parts, and probably more of the metallics.

I also decided to go with white on green for the various X's on the shoulderpads and such (though I haven't gotten to the white yet, so it looks like blue on green right now).

Oh hey, I managed to finish the blue today, woot! On to the white. Or the metallics. Whichever I feel like doing tomorrow, I guess. :tu:

Need to figure out where all my remaining resin bases went...

Update on the Librarian front! I finally got in the last two blisters, so I have all ten Librarians, now. Well, except the one mounted on a bike. So that's what I spent a good chunk of today building, and here's the result!

http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2011/044/f/b/librarian_wip___3_by_allerka-d39ib28.jpg

Lotta different bitz involved, so here's the list:

-Standard bike and guns

-Ravenwing cowling on the front

-Book from Sammael's jetbike

-Ravenwing banner poles

-Ravenwing box/roll on the very back

-Various purity seals/scrolls

-Robed legs

-Black Templar tabard front torso

-Vehicle crew back torso (i.e. his power source is the bike)

-Servo-skull familiar

-Left arm is from (I think) the Noise Marine kit

-Left hand is Chaos Icon bearer hand

-Spear blade is from a Grey Knight Terminator

-Right arm is a Chaos Marine arm

-Right hand from standard biker arm

-Standard Space Marine head with osmotic gill

-Hand-made psychic hood (skull is from normal bike banner pole)

-Some green stuff

-Resin base by Micro Art Studios

I kept the force weapon close to the body to keep a slim profile, so he packs easier. Kind of excited about these guys, I wanna get them ready in time for the next Apocalypse game, so I can use that Librarium Battle Squad datasheet I came up with.

Blah, this is going slower than I was hoping it would. Of course, it probably doesn't help when I have to spend most of a week with my painting hand in a brace because I had a wipe-out on some ice and apparently sprained my wrist (first time that's ever happened, even). So, smaller update this time, but still making some progress.

First up is the Assault Squad:

http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2011/051/0/1/assault_squad___wip_5_by_allerka-d3a006d.jpg

Got a coat of Dheneb Stone on the parts that'll be white, which'll make it much easier for me to actually get them white, rather than paint six coats of white and still not quite get there. Also trying a new background technique with the pictures themselves to help the models stand out more, ala what GW does with their stuff. Thoughts?

The other update is with the biker Librarian:

http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2011/051/0/5/librarian_wip_4_by_allerka-d3a00gr.jpg

Got him primed and the first colors started. I'm practicing a new gold technique on a test model, and, if it works, the bright silver parts on the bike (i.e. the wings) will get the same treatment. I'm also going to try something similar on his weapon.

Well, the Assault Squad is nearly done, at least! I should have just elected to do them and maybe a couple Librarians or something. Got too much other stuff distracting me. Oh, well.

Anyway, here's the updates.

Assault Squad:

And the biker Librarian:

I should have the Assault Squad done by the end of the week, at least.
