Hawk Lords Army WIP

Well, i decided to pull my finger out and get started on my Hawk Lords army.

I painted up a test marine, and posted it HERE, but then never really got going on the army. Well, I decided last weekend to get it ready, starting with a Tac squad. I've just finished my second Tactical marine - 8 more to go!

Sunday WIP

And just finshed today (17/01)

Here is my original Test Marine from the other thread

And the two of them together

I went for Golden Yellow Shoulder pad rims on the first guy, but this time have decided I prefer the rims a little bit more subdued. They along with the badge and squad markings are Iyanden Darksun on the Mk6 Marine. Which do you think looks better?

I'm going for the colour scheme in the current Space Marine codex, so I'm going to paint any Chest eagles Black/Charcoal and the lenses will be Red. I tried Green eye lenses following suggestions from the other thread, and it didn't look right.

The chapter badge is freehand, and is a swine to do. I'm very greatful to Lord Skullthrone for his Raven Guard badge tutorial in his blog!!

C&C welcome as always

The colours are really well chosen, and that is a beautiful job on the free hand chapter badge. I would go with the subdued yellow myself, it does look better with the purple. Good luck with the rest of the squad.

Nice work Cyrox. Have you thought about grabbing some Raven Guard bitz or decals from Forgeworld? The Chapter symbol is the same so it'd work right off the bat, even the decals would just needs to be neatly over-painted yellow which is simple enough.

Other than that I have to agree the eyes are too close to the armour and should be something for a nice contrast, the same probably applies to the purity seals, though the shoulder one works nicely with the pauldron trim. Perhaps a wash to tone down the grey highlights on the bolter just to really round things off too, other wise :P

Thanks all - think i'll stick with the Iyanden Darksun then

@SCC - I'm going to buy some of those RG ForgeWorld bits, aswell as some Brass Etch Raven Guard symbols too. I've just downloaded the Hawk Lords sheet, and going to invest in some decal paper, as I can't paint that symbol on every Marine, it will kill me :P

Can you print it on any printer?

Dunno, I bought the FW RG decal sheet, it had loads of neat RG decals, white ones, black ones, squad symbols, little bird skulls, numbers and so forth, plus vehicle sized ones.

That said I think as long as you use ink jet decal paper in an ink jet and laser printer decal paper in a laser printer you'll be fine.

@WingsoFTheFalcon Sure, but i've hardly played 5th edition, so may need a refresher course. I drive, but have no gaming table

@SCC - decal paper and micro set and mirosol ordered :D

Thanks everyone for the kind comments - starting more tomorrow

Nice posing on your minis. I second the comment about your red eye lenses being too similar to your purple armour though. A bit more contast would be good. I think part of the difficulty is that the purple in your photos is more in the violet range with more red than blue

If you want to stick with red eye lenses, how about building up some highlights with red/orange through to orange/white? Yellow/orange is a contrasting colour for purple, particularly if you built up the shadows on the purple armor by darkening your purple into indigo in the recesses.

Continuing with themes, what colour do you plan to use for veterans and sergeants? A white helmet for vets would work with the purple, but a red helmet might not work.

The veterans and Terminators will have White Helmets, and the Sergeants will have the same colour helmets as normal marines, but I'll use Helmets with a skull, or go for bare-headed.

The Shoulder pad rim is the same colour as the chapter badge in the Codex, so i'm going to assume (rightly or wrongly) that the Black chest eagle shown in the Codex denotes 5th company, thus all my reg Marines with a chest Eagle will have them black, denoting the 5th company.

For the veterans alongside the White helmet I think i'll have gold rims and chest eagles, like this dude

What do you think? Or go with a White Chest eagle?

Suggestions welcome

I love Mk.IV armour :)

As for the chest eagle, have you tried a white aquila using the painter? I like the gold in that image so I'd be tempted to just go with that and really make the Vets stand out.

@SCC Yeah Mk4 is mean looking. Tried white, looked a bit odd, and you are right, i think the Gold should look good provided i can paint it ok lol

@Darth Potato Thanks mate. As for the FW kits, they are very nice, if pricey. I'd say they are worth it yeah, but I'd find it harder to say that if i was a student

@Vodunius Cheers for the info - I'm not too keen on that book, but in that case I guess my Marines are from the 2nd compnay lol. Going to stick with Gold rims and Whote Helmet s for the veterans though

wow! very nice looking hawk lords there...you planning on taking lots of storm ravens? <_<

Well, I have one pre-ordered already

As a chapter that is master of Thunderhawk tactics, I'm guessing they would use a Storm Raven or three

Thread rescue!

Its been a while since I did any work on these, but now things have settled i thought it would be time to get going again

Not much of an update, added another basecoat to the Missile Launcher Marine, and started with base layers on 2 tactical marines (flamer and Mk4). Still very much WIP though.

I've also put the sergeant together with Blue tack to see how he looks - any good? Can't make my mind up, i think I like it:
