Like loads of others I got a load of 40k stuff for Christmas. Im 30 in a couple of weeks and these are the first marines ive painted in 17 years! Comments and tips and greatly appreciated! Ive not decided on a name for the chapter yet, I guess i'll know it when I see it, all I know for sure so far is that they are from the 13th founding, and following the codex. I plan on completing a full battle company, ive gone for the 4th, with support from 1st, 8th, and 10th. Anyway the first model I painted is the black reach dreadnought

Feel kinda sorry that you've gone 7 posts in and nobody bothered to add any comments. For Shame B&C! For Shame!

Right then. Models look quite nice but they can be improved. I think (and correct if I'm wrong) that you're not thinning your paints so much, it kinda shows on the first tac marine shoulderpads. Next problem is the mash of colours - we have a terracotta-orange base with red and green and white and silver :) I suggest losing the green or red and replacing it with the couterpart (i.e red for green or green for red), or trying something else out that balances, like that beige on the kneepad of said marine. Your highlighting effort is okay but the models all need washes. If you haven't been using them, I'd recommend Badab Black for metallics, Ogryn Flesh (a pinkish orange) for the armour, Gryphonne Sepia (yellow) for the parchment part of the seals, and Baal Red for the red. Basing is nice ;)

finally someone made a comment! cheers Hubernator

yeah, Ive just figured out the whole thinning the paints down! gives a much better finish, as for the color scheme, I'd settled for orange armor, with a red shoulder pad where the chapter symbol is gonna go, and the green is cause they are from the 4th company. The odd yellow knee pads are down to a picture i saw in an old codex where the ultra marines have squad numbers on there knees on a yellow pad.

So assuming Im keeping the orange armor, and red shoulder pad, what would you recommend? Im thinking of continuing the green piping to cover the tac symbols, so that will get rid all the white, as for the odd yellow knee pads, what do you think? red to tie in with the shoulder pads?

I get what your saying about losing the green or the red, but one is chapter identity and other company identity, what would you do?

as for washes, all the models and washed in devlan mud, guess it doesn't come out in the pics too well but they are quite heavily shaded even if the highlights are a bit dodgy!

GOod to know about the paint thinning, I had to learn that one meself :D Urm okay for trim I can understand why you chose green but I think it kind of ruins the scheme. Or makes it like the marines should be in a garden :P I think you could try yellow trim instead of green - it will blend in well and hey it denotes company right? If it's DIY it doesn't have to strictly abide by the silly trim colour for comapyn marking system the UMs use ;) Washes wise I did spot streaks so I think you might want to water the washes down a tad as well. I would still suggest black for metallics - gives a nice darker finish. Baal red is good for the reds aloing with devland mud (one wash red, dry, one wash mud). Try out ogryn flesh on a model instead of devland mud and see what the result is - you may like it.

Oh and that rhino has a hatch missing. Don't want any sneaky grots getting in there ;)
