Shadow Hunters

I managed to do some painting over the weekend and thought I'd post the work so far.

I'm a long way from having any solid fluff set down as yet, but I want a very dour monkish marine chapter with no unnecessary ostentation. I want them to look like they would be at home in a cold dark fortress monastery dedicated to the arts of war. Perhaps the founding chapter master was a Chaplin?, They obviously have a strong DA influence, maybe they are a successor chapter, maybe they aren't or maybe they have a hint of the unforgiven about them, who knows?. The colours are bone and black to mirror the Chaplin. I don't have much of an idea for a chapter symbol as yet, but I'm thinking of something like a grail or maybe the Grail knights cross used in the Indiana Jones film, I'll see if I can find a picture

Maybe a variation on something like this....

Anyhoo.... the newest five chaps are started and I have included a picture of a force commander made from a Black Reach commander I got for peanuts. I have deliberately included a chaos chest plate to hint at the fact these chaps have been around for a very long time and have plenty of ancient armour to choose from.

More bits, when and if....

Opps, I suppose this should have been in WIP, sorry about that...it's a age thing.... : (

Hi,

I have to say i really love your colour scheme. The robes look great in black and the bone-coloured armour is a brilliant contrast and looks excellent in its own right.

From the texture of the robes i'm guessing tht you dry-brushed them? Its left a slightly chalky look which could probably be fixed with a really thin glaze of badab black.

Great conversion with the Black Reach captain, your version looks alot more 3-D and characterful.

Cheers,

Mike. ^_^

Thanks chaps. :)

The chalky look is because as you said I dry-brushed the robes. I did give them a wash of thinned chaos black, but I overdid it and had to dry-brush again to make the robes lighter. I have a bottle of black ink somewhere, but I cant put a finger on it at the moment and after 4 years I'm surprised so many of my paints have made it through still in liquid form, it's time to invest in paint again I think.

I am using the unused front of the commander to make a Sargent/ commander figure of some sort, but I haven't got further than marrying him up to an old body at the moment to see if it works.

Jury is still out on this...

I am thinking of trying a Terminator next and maybe a crack at a Dreadnought to see how the paint works with those models, once these are finally sorted.

Thanks to Kurgan the Lurker btw, for moving the post for me :)

Cheers

Steve.

Here you go then Nat. They are still WIP's as they both need a bit of something or other doing to them. The jump pack Chaplin is going to get a new full bone helmet and the staff is going to be painted more in line with the Terminator one.

Well I've had a wee bit of a play over the last two evenings and now have enough paint on the Terminator and the Commander to get an idea how they will look.

I'm in two minds over the Termi, because there is less black on the shoulders, no edging, he looks a bit washed out compared to the standard tactical bods. I'm considering reversing the colours and giving the Terminators black armour and bone helmet and shoulders, any thoughts? I admit though the photo is not the best and he is less washed out in real life. I'm also not sure about the power claws being red, maybe just do them steel like the Sargent's sword.

The Commander is much better, more balanced re the colours. The only thing I'm thinking is reverse the shield to black background with a bone device to match the banner...or reverse the banner to match the shield? choices choices.... The power sword need a bit of thought to...I'm tempted to give them black (Stormbringer) swords and power weapons as a whole, if I can find a convincing way to do it...thoughts, links would help...

Next up a Dreadnought to see what the paint looks like...

Fantastic colour scheme and the painting is first class. I really like the simple conversion of the AoBR captain, looks great and the blue eyes on the chaplain are amazing!

Looking forward to more!

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello again,

I had planned to do a bit of painting and a wee update last weekend, but unfortunately some idiot :D forgot to check the heating oil tank and we spent from Friday to Monday huddled round the coal fire trying to stay warm.

I did get to have a bit of a play later in the week and last night, so here's an update.

Firstly, the Jump pack Chaplin got a new helmet and staff head to bring him in line more with the Termi Chaplin.

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd272/snowdogs777/Steve185.jpg

Secondly, I had a go at an old nasty Dreadnought to see how things would look. I'm quite pleased how it turned out so far and so I'll spend some time on him tarting him up a bit and adding bits and bobs. It's a shame about the pose though, he leans a good way back at the moment and that will be hard to correct without resorting to a big knife and a saw.

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd272/snowdogs777/Steve195.jpg

The commander is all but finished, the sword looks odd in the pictures, but looks a bit better IRL, but I may still change it.

Next a stroke of luck on ebay, I'd been looking for a Land raider going cheap so I could strip it and paint it again, when I saw an auction for two LR's at less the £20.00 each, two impulse buys later and these two turned up on the doorstep. They turned out to be well painted, and because they are predominantly black, they will only need a bit of work to have them ready to go. I have started on the Crusader, all that was once yellow has now been painted bone and the blue weapons have been painted black. The other one is how it came.

Lastly group shots of the infantry so far....

Thanks again for all the kind words so far, much appreciated.

Steve.

A couple of years ago, wandering round one of those new age, crystal, nicky-nacky shops, I spotted a small resin statue of an Angel. Thinking it may come in handy some day for a bit of terrain or something and as it was only about a couple of quid I bought it.

Last night I had an idea......

Possibly a very stupid one.....

But I sort of like it......

Unpainted and held on with blue tack, just to see how it looks....

Thoughts anyone?

Cheers chaps, thanks for all the nice comments...

Natanael... Conceptually I agree, that the jump pack Chaplin looks like it should/could have the wings, but I do rather like the idea of an black armoured winged Angel of Death bestriding the battlefield dispensing justice to the enemies of a half dead god. Perhaps if the Chaplin was the chapter master, is such a thing allowed?

s.bloodhowl... the bone is dead easy.... ,black undercoat. then as I was using Vallejo game colour, base coat with thinned Cobra leather then add thinned Bonewhite to highlight. Just before the final highlight, give all the bone a very thin wash or two of the Cobra, then do the final highlight of the bone and a bit of white if it needs it. Some of the Marines are a good bit dirtier than the others, it just depends on how far you take the highlighting up from the Cobra. Citadel Snakebite leather and Bleached bone are as near as, it you only have citadel paints.

Heru Talon... are they daft because they are wings, or because they are not on Blood angels? I surprised that with all the Angel iconography associated with 40,000 there aren't more winged figures about. Perhaps he could do with being flanked by a couple of cherubs carrying war gear to bolster the theme?

or in a moment of rare clarity, maybe not...... :D

Dorns padawan, zxyogi, chaplain belisarius many thanks for the kind words :D

I very much like your color scheme, and the execution is a pleasure. As far as the wings, I think they look OK on the Terminator Chaplain, but on the Jump Pack Chaplain they look redundant. It is "odd" to see wings on a suit of TDA, but depending on personal/fluff reasoning not odd enough that I would knock it. But attached to a jump pack it just looks bad, in my opinion.

Heru Talon... are they daft because they are wings, or because they are not on Blood angels?

They are daft because they are fluffy wings, and they don't suit either of the models:

On the Terminator his pose doesn't suit them, and on the other the positioning doesn't fit at all. It is as if his jump pack has wings, rather than him himself.

I've seen wings on non-BA that look good. So it's not the fact that your guys aren't BA.

Quick picture of three wip tacticals. The skull painted beakey harps back to the days when I painted a squad of Griffons in the Badab war camouflage, they all had skull helmets.
