CML question

Greetings brothers,

I am going to battle a blasphemous Eldar tomorrow with my brand new 1500 pts army list of the Bran Redmaw's finest. My army will descend upon him in Drop Pods and in its core will be my terminators (yep, I know they're not that wonderful against Eldar but I just love those models) - and I am wondering whether or not to equip one Wolf Guard with a Cyclone Missile Launcher to help me strike down those awful, melta-proof Wave Serpents.

I need to know if the Wolf Guard with the CML can use both the CML and a combi-weapon at the same time. The rules say that he can shoot with the CML while shooting with stormbolter but since combi-weapons can replace stormbolters, is it possible that he could launch 2 krak missiles AND a melta shot?

Thank you very much for help, I tried to search for it but found nothing.

I would hope yes, but don't take my word for it. I am sure some rules lawyers will show up and let you know.

Of course, if you are dropping in with multiple wolf guard, then it is easy to give other guard the combi-weapons to avoid this issue.

Yeah.... a CML is an excellent idea. Id also advise that your 5th pod, and maybe your 4rth aswell, contain dreadnaughts with assault cannons and heavy flamers. Drop in behind them and pop the tank, or shred infantry out in the open.

Plasma, and typhoons, are excellent versus Mechanized Eldar. Take both, in numbers.

Best of luck!

yep, he comes with four more terminators, 3 of whom have combi-meltas. the problem is that I run into an awful lot of Wave Serpents and Land Raiders in my local store and I want to be able to erase those things as soon as I arrive on the battlefield, the greater the chance the better. so even that single little extra combi-melta could mean a lot.

3 combi-meltas is usually enough to hurt one target. I don't know exactly what your load out is, since you didn't mention what the 5th termie has, but you could always drop pod in 4 terminators, and 2 power armor wolf guard. 1 termie with CML, and perhaps a chainfist to hurt tanks the following turn, plus 2 PA guard with combi-meltas, plus the other 2-3 termies with combi-meltas if you want. That's 4-5 meltas.

My point is if these guys are primarily dropping down to use combi-weapons to take out vehicles, then increase the number of regular wolf guard and take out a terminator or two. If your drop pod has 3 termies, then you can fit 4 PA guard with combi-weapons as well. Just remember, unless you drop in with Long Fangs, you can only shoot at one target per unit you drop in. Hope this helps.

You've answered your own question. What do the rules say can be fired with a CML? A stormbolter. Do they mention anything else, like a combi-melta? No. So the answer is no.

We actually need a FAQ on this, because only the SW can have a terminator with CML and combi-weapon loadout, so GW has never touched upon this. Deathwing has CML with stormbolters, but CSM, while having combi-weapons on their termies have no access to CML.

Thank you very much for all the advice, brothers - I showed that damn Eldar where his place is!

He brought Yriel with 9 Warlocks (Embolden, Enhance) and a Wave Serpent with TLBL, a Farseer (Guide, Fortune), 10 Avengers with an Exarch in another Wave Serpent (this one with EML), 3 War Walkers with Scatter lasers, 2 Fire Prisms and 3 Guardian jetbikes.

In the end, I gave up that CML and just brought a Dreadnought (it was the first time ever that I used him) with AssC/HF in a Drop Pod, two Drop Pods with melta-totting Grey Hunters with Wolf Guard terminators as pack leaders, one Pod with Blood Claws with a flamer and another TDA pack leader with a Heavy flamer, 6 Long Fangs (3MLs and 2HBs) and 5 Wolf Scouts with a PA pack leader, a meltagun and with MotW. There was one more Drop Pod filled with terminators (4 combi-meltas altogether), a single PA WG and a Wolf Priest and one of the GH packs had a Rune Priest with LL/MH attached.

Although my melta fire was terribly ineffective (2 packs of GHs and the terminator pack only managed to blow up one Fire Prism in the first round), I managed to eventually destroy his transports and butcher his Avengers so he was pretty much unable to claim any objectives.

The Dreadnought didn't do much - he dropped in 4th round and mostly just drawed some fire, but he managed to snipe the Farseer hidden in a unit of 3 remaining Warlocks and Yriel with his Assault Cannon - I love to instakill enemy models on S6! So he paid for himself.

What really saved me were the Wolf Scouts who wonderfully complement a Drop Podding force. After they came from an unexpected angle, they destroyed both Wave Serpents with their meltaguns and torn apart the Avengers (who had been "pre-warmed" by the flamer Blood Claws).

In the end, I still had my Long Fangs left unscathed, the Wolf Scouts did not suffer a single loss, I had all the Blood Claws left with their pack leader, a half of one pack of Grey Hunters with their pack leader, the Dreadnought was just stunned and even two Drop Pods survived. All the Eldar had left was Yriel with 2 wounds, those 3 Guardian jetbikes hidden behind a hill and a Fire Prism.
