The Fists of the Fourth

Recommended Posts

Due to the chapters recent mishap, apparently a fleet-based company had accidentally parked on a planet since the Emperor told them to do so, and have been completely wiped out over a book. Mistakes happen (Abnett's script writing skills mostly), but we must move on. Due to a massive reorganization and relocation, my two previous captain models have been reassigned.

Captain Killsh** was moved to the 5th to teach those new ragamuffins a thing or two.

"What's this here grenade launcher auxiliary to? How's about my fist?" You will be missed.

Captain Tybrus was given leadership of the 4th, but when then quickly promoted again to 3rd company, after the previous Master of the Arsenal accidentally pulled the pin on a vortex grenade in a small confined storeroom. (Hey Typhus if you're still active and reading this, congrats on the promotion)

I don't know what I'll do without your signature top hat to instill fear in your enemies.

On a serious note, I've started putting together a new captain model.

Please ignore the torso, it was an attempt at Dornian Heresy Ultramarines before I realized they were still Ultramarines. The big nasty pole shall represent a relic blade, and the shield up front will end up getting decorated and called a storm shield. I'm not too positive on how I'm going to pretty up the bike though, as it looks rather plain as of now. That means throw in your suggestions please.

I don't think I'm going to glue the shield or arms down though. I have a secondary captain build that still involves the bike, but has a pair of thunderhammers. Since he has more than enough wounds, I think for this build I'll have a magnetized sidecar with a marine holding a few spare hammers for him. A power armored caddy.

I decided to come back to the Fists after finding out Reaper actually carries an equivalent to the discontinued badmoon yellow, so I'm back in business.

Would the model be too "busy" if I based him jumping the bike over a shark?

Started thinking today "you know what would be cool? Starting something that will be extremely difficult to build in the long run, and only have limited use in a game." So I'm making a strike cruiser.

I found a spare large blast template in my BFG box, so I'm going to build around that to have an elaborate model to represent the orbital strike.

A special thanks to some user known as Vaaish on warseer that google directed me to. He/she is the only person kind enough to take an up close side shot of any BFG ships. Without your commissioned IF cruiser, I would have spent hours finagling with the BFG unit rules .pdf (they set the .pdf so that you couldn't select photos and copy to clipboard).

It's all a stand in until I can get a proper dowel for the beam.

I forgot to say this in my last post, but the new biker captain hasn't been named yet. Suggestions would be awesome. Perhaps helpful posters may get a model named in their honor?

Post number three, and it's still just me.

Did a test run with the new paints, and I wasn't too pleased with the result. My old recipe was Golden Yellow, Chestnut ink for cracks, Golden Yellow over all surface, Sunburst Yellow on all upper half of surfaces, and then highlight of Badmoon and Sunburst mix. I'm pretty positive at least one of those yellows are discontinued, and I know for sure they don't sell chestnut ink.

The new colors are from Reaper paints, but the compatibility chart I found on dakka wasn't 100%. Marigold Yellow is extremely orange, sun yellow looks right on the bottle but comes out VERY neon when dry, and I'm too afraid to put on the lemon yellow highlight for now. I didn't do the shade color with the test model since Orange and Brown Imperial Fists are things I refuse to believe in.

I think the worst bit in the lack of chestnut ink. Baal red does not have that charm it's older brother had. If there is a silver lining to this new color scheme, it's that now the yellow really pops.

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r120/Jaffar_Hasad/Dark%20Angels/HPIM1221.jpg

I did a comparison photo of the old and new scheme. Hopefully the more models I paint, the less noticeable it becomes.

Still looking for base suggestions and Captain names.

Thank you zxyogi. All you would need is thin layers and a tiny tiny brush.

I lost the helmet to that model 2 nights ago. I dropped it, and my room has a funky gravitational field that prevents things from falling straight down. Still can't find it, and I'm rather cheesed since it took hours dremeling it and inserting a face. You would think something bright yellow would stand out...

Still looking for suggestions.

----edit----

After spelunking under my desk, I found it pretty far back. It was a full 24 inches away from where the initial fall point should have been.

Added the Lemon Yellow highlight, and I must say...... YES!

Lemon would not be the right name for this yellow. I would call it "Fuzzy Baby Chicken" yellow. It also goes on and is easy to blend into Sun Yellow. I had really low hopes for this model, but that highlight really changed my mood.

I plan on painting up the biker Captain up to at least this standard. I just don't have a torso picked out for him, or his sidecar. Name is still up for suggestions.

Decided on a torso, and in that decision had to scrap the old head. I found an old ravenwing biker body from back when the ravenwing box just threw in 3 metal shoulder pads and called it a day. The backpack is from that special crimson fist guy, Cortez I believe. That shoulder in the photo will end up on the terminator with assault cannon, but the design will go into the captain's pad as well.

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r120/Jaffar_Hasad/Dark%20Angels/HPIM1227.jpg

I also started on the bike's sidecar. It's a lame start, but I'm hoping everything will come through nicely.

Very Nice, I like your 'Fuzzy Baby Chicken' Yellow. And if I may say so, you must be mad to attempt that BFG ship-thing. Fortunately your madness seems to fall into the kind that makes good models.

Suggestions for Captain's Name:

Arberdon

Tanner

Ventarus

Lyphe

Kephus

(Sorry if those are hideously insulting words, when naming models I just pick what feels right to me ^_^)

How dare you Zincite! In my country, if you say those names backwards while hopping on one foot, well that's just grounds for execution. I will keep running those names through my head along with all other poster's usernames, and hopefully something sticks.

I've been holding off work on the captain because I wasn't sure what I should do next. I'm torn between making the shoulder pad or just buying a pack of Fist pads from GW's site. That Crimson Fist Command sprue looks sexy. Plus with a pack of IF terminator arms I could turn some LC termies into shooty ones. And with the deathwing pack...

That's why I try not to get involved with online purchases. While not working on the biker captain, I've kept busy with my DA LPC project, and a model to see what an IF bike would look like. I've also started making a frame out of legos for the strike cruiser. All that remains is the hard part.

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r120/Jaffar_Hasad/Dark%20Angels/HPIM1232.jpg

I only have this single attack bike, but it would look great driving alongside the twin hammered variant captain.

I'm guessing you mean the armor damage to the facial region? That isn't too hard, but it can be quite time consuming.

Tools:

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_f_W2t7sM938/SYm2Ho81XHI/AAAAAAAABdk/7UKoJeoGZkM/s800/dremel.jpg

While not necessary, a dremel tool will take minutes (if not hours) out of the initial carving phase. These can be quite affordable during sale seasons, and anything that isn't name brand (a Dremel brand will work just as well as a Craftsman or Black and Decker). Just be careful not to drill too deep. I suggest taking a leftover sprue practice carving into the frame. You'll want to go higher in speed (I usually use around 8/10), as it will reduce the resistance friction you'll feel. More on that later.

http://www.naturalhorsetrim.com/Cheryls_dremel_bits.jpg

Of the bits and heads you'll get in a dremel, you'll want to use the grinder. The one second to right is the style I use, and if you get multiple sizes always use the smaller one.

Pin-vise

Craft knife

Set of small files

Sculpting tool

Fine Grit sandpaper

Pliers

Eye wear

Dust mask

Materials:

A space marine helmet

A plastic head showing some skin

Two-party epoxy of your choice

Sticky tac

First off you're going to need to pick the side of the helmet you want damaged. Take your pin vise, and drill at the center of your gaping wound. Try to drill straight in, and stop near the center of the helmet. Take your kinfe (or saw if you have a small one) and cut off the nub used to fit the head into a neck socket. Congrats, you just did 5 minutes of work. If you have not poked or cut your fingers horribly yet, you are better at this hobby than I.

For the next part, you'll want to secure the head to a surface. This is what I use the sticky tac for. Use a very large glob of it (try 1" in diameter sphere) and squish that helmet in upside down. If you really value your hands, this is what the pliers are for. Basically find a way to secure that helmet so that you can put pressure on it, and not engrave your finger. I do not approve of self-mutilation, let me make that very clear.

Now comes the part where you put on your goggles and dust mask. Plug in the dremel, fasten the grind in tight, and please use caution. Start in the center of the freshly removed nub, and start drilling straight down slowly. If you have problems with your tool spinning the helmet while you drill, you are pressing too hard for your current speed setting. Higher speeds make quick work, but you must still must go at a safe pace. Stop constantly to see if you dremel to your initial face hole bore.

Once you get past the eye level and start working towards the top of the helmet, you should start widening your hole by going around in a circular motion. Notice that the tool will fancy clockwise motions (or was it counter clockwise? I haven't dremeled since Halloween). Note the direction the bit spins. Try not to force the tool in any other direction. Now reposition the helmet to its proper upright position, and drill the wound hole to the size desired. Try to keep the sides about 5mm thick at the thinnest points. Also be weary now if you are using pliers, as lateral pressure may crush your work.

Now find yourself a face to use. So far the ones I have used came from the older Catachan heavy weapons kit. Hold the face next to your helmet and see what exactly should be shown. Start slicing up the head, first into 3/4ths. If you want what I've done, keep the nose and ear. The head still won't fit, as GW sucks with scaling. Chop off everything above the forehead and start filing away until you can manage to get that sucker in.

It's in, now what? Take that epoxy and start filling in gaps. Jam it right up on the cut side of the face to keep everything snug and secure. Finally take a blob of the stuff about half a centimeter large and stick it on the bottom. Smash thing into a neck socket of a spare torso you have, remove, and cut away the excess.

This is great for showing battle damage, as done with my Genestealer dueling IF terminator. It also looks great on nurgle marines, as shown below.

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r120/Jaffar_Hasad/Emperors%20Children/Nfinishfrontleft.jpg?t=1296714078

Feel free to use this method, but please send me a PM so I can see and respond to your blog once you make some. Sorry that this tutorial sucks, but hopefully next time I make something like this I'll remember to take some pictures during each phase.

I'm going to be a drama queen and say I'm rather close to hobby suicide. Just when bits and ideas were coming together, I dropped the Captain's torso+head bit. Searched for 10 minutes, but then lost my cool. It was great watching it bounce off the seat of my chair, then hear it clang off of my desk leg in a random direction. I think I need to invest in a safety net of some sort.

Despite this, expect a picture update within a few days. I inserted a magnet to the bike, so the side-car will be modular. Still not 100% on name so suggestions are still appreciated.

The torso bounced into a box full of winter apparel, so everything is back on track.

The magnetic sidecar is turning into a nuisance since the attraction is tearing through the epoxy holding the magnet in place. I guess I have to go pick up some actual superglue at some point this week.

Started work on the shield. If I can find the bit, the fist should have a laurel and there will be some wings and thunderbolts around the circle.

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r120/Jaffar_Hasad/Dark%20Angels/HPIM1236.jpg

Also found an interesting bit in my chaos box, so I'll throw it on to hide the gigantic filled gap at the waist.

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r120/Jaffar_Hasad/Dark%20Angels/HPIM1237.jpg

I've also realized that if I'm not feeling a biker captain, he could easily become an attack bike.

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r120/Jaffar_Hasad/Dark%20Angels/HPIM1238.jpg

The reason I'm shying away from this captain is that I now have access to someone's forgeworld book, specifically volume 9. There's a captain in there who's chapter tactics seem to reflect my views on how IF should be represented as a chapter, so I might have to make a model for it. As much as I hate special characters (GW should stop calling them special), Tank Hunters and Extra Armour are a better representation of the siege kings than stubborn.

If I do cop-out and use a special character, I guess I could call the biker a chapter master. This would allow me to convert up some centerpiece honor guard.

@ Brother Rathul: Missed your toast, but thank you. Have you done any work on your IF's since last may?

@ Leonidus: You're welcome. Again, please send me a link if you ever use it. I'd love to see your results.

@ zxyogi: Danke.

Still accessorizing the model before I glue everything into place. I'm never too sure how stingy people are about WYSIWYG, so I'm adding a rag with krak grenades and a frag on the left and right hips respectively. Also threw on that Iron Halo. Apparently if a captain doesn't have one, SM fans lose their minds.

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r120/Jaffar_Hasad/Dark%20Angels/HPIM1240.jpg

I also worked on making the bike fit for the captain, so I threw on a banner, and started work on the storm shield. The lines coming out of the chapter emblem will be cut straight and sanded into lightning bolts. The purity seal may be scrapped for a smaller one; I need those gaps on the sides clear for bolter barrels.

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r120/Jaffar_Hasad/Dark%20Angels/HPIM1241.jpg

The name list has been shortened to Ventarus and Rathul. Shame zxyogi doesn't roll off the tongue. Mind giving a suggestion or two?

On a final note I'm going to point out that I found a solution to the magnetic sidecar falling apart. Doused it in superglue, and it now holds weight like a champ.

Yes, after dropping my small purity seal yesterday I have been convinced that Games Workshop install a small teleporter in every Piece so if you drop them they 'port 10 inches in a random direction.

The shield is awesome, it's very easy to imagine him ramming a Chaos cultist. BLOOD FOR THE BLO... *muffled crunch*

It has come to my attention that you are using far too many Ravenwing parts on your captain, the Interrogator Chaplains have been informed.

Hey Brother Styphus , nice to see another 40k gamer from michigan. I like these fists a lot, the yellow is really looking great. The just look so... soft.... and fluffy....

Haha, probably not what you were going for but awesome none the less. I'll be watching this thread.

Where on the big mitten are you located?

As for the colors, may I please direct your attention to post #7:

Lemon would not be the right name for this yellow. I would call it "Fuzzy Baby Chicken" yellow.

The yellow is indeed soft and fluffy. I think it will make the carnage I plan to dish out that much sweeter. Thank you Zincite for giving me a lovely idea for the base.

I haven't done any work over the weekend due to concert attendance, but I have done a fair bit of brainstorming on what to add. So far the best idea that has come up was making a highly converted Honor Guard. As much as I love the FW Iron Armor models, ordering overseas just isn't in the budget. I guess I'll just look up tutorials and give it my all. I'll start out small, will just a champ and 2 guards. Standard gear, but everyone will have a wrist-mounted grenade launcher. When I expand the squad, I'll throw in a few more marines and a banner.

I've also had plans for possible conversions, but until the contest organizer posts up a theme, I'll keep it to myself.

I'm really lovin' that storm shield for your bike captain, it's turning out very nice. Where's that aquilla from? Plus it's always great to see any yellow painted army, especially an 'eye-bleed' shade like yours. Beautiful. Any chance of a vehicle in the future? It'd be great to see a Land Raider or a Pred burning out the retinas of it's foes with sheer awesomeness...

P.S. Hells yes, Michigan! I'm from Alpena originally.

I have a rhino with whirlwind/razorback bits that I painted in the old yellow and old brushes. It's the closest thing to botched retinal surgery you can get to. I'll throw that on my list, but probably after a storm raven if the rumor for official rules for all chapters comes true.

Alpena? I have a buddy who lives up near there. Not a 40k person though.

Looks like you beat me to my idea. I was also planning on escaping the big mitten after school gets out, and run to one of the Carolinas.

----edit-----

The aquilla is from an IG chimera kit. Came with 2 winged skulls, and 2 aquillas. I have one of each left, but luckily both of the used ones weren't wasted.

I started painting up the main body of the captain and his shield to keep myself busy. I won't start on the arms until I man up and purchase the Crimson Fist command shoulder pads from GW. I also took pages of my steps if anyone is interested in seeing how the color is done.

1: Start with grey primer or Astronomican Grey, and then give the model a full coloration in Marigold Yellow.

2: Wash the model's crevasses with Baal Red.

3: Re-paint the entire model with Marigold Yellow again, leaving the edges and gaps red. This would be a good time to paint the details and eyes their base color.

4: Paint entire model in Sun Yellow, leaving lower and shaded areas still Marigold.

Slideshow

This is where I stopped because I couldn't stand all that yellow. I think I'll hold off on the Lemon Yellow until I get other pieces up to speed.

In the modeling side of things, I collected bits to work on the Honor Guard. Mk3 armor seems like it's going to be a real pain to get it from standard bits to FW quality.

While I'm here, I wonder what this blurry chaos marine is for.
