The Fists of the Fourth

Is he perhaps going to be hit by a rather large bike?

Shush, the person who came up with the concept isn't allowed to guess. It ruins the fun for everyone else :P

So I sort of zoned out last night and started progress on one of the Honor Guard. I wasn't planning on making progress until I finished something else, but I guess the subconscious mind knows what it wants.

That explains the sharp pains and shallow cuts on my fingertips. Also explains this lovely tutorial page.

With the legs started, I picked out bits today. The chest is only in layout phase now, so please excuse the sloppiness of it all. The helmet is almost done, but it requires sanding and engraving before it is picture ready. The camera seemed to pick out the worst of the details, so expect a real photo once that gets sorted out.

I have enough shoulder pads for 2 full marines, and an extra right pad for a third. The edging needs gs to fill in those chaotic chips, but I'm surprised how accurate they actually are to mk3. Chaos marines are so generous with what bits they come with. I still have to do the Fist logo, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to squeeze in my usual design. Every Guard will have a small heraldry shield with the BT cross, with my reasoning being that the armor dates back to the days when that symbol was just a badge of honor in the Fists army.

The arm with the sword will be used, though I'm thinking of throwing the axe on that arm instead of the blade. It looks so much more characterful than that boring sword. I still need to pick out the other arm and sculpt the vambraces. Oh, and attach the auxiliary 'nade tube. Wait, wrist mounted whatsits?

Threw it all together with tac today. I still need to clean up the helmet, put on one of those wacky mk3 cod pieces, add the GS blobs to the feet, and add rivets to the vambraces. From there it's just a matter of adding decoration and that 'nade launcher.

More work on the first Honor Guardsman. I've noticed the chest is a bit wonky, but luckily the bolter fully covers it.

I haven't forgotten about the biker captain, I just haven't been in a speedy painting mood. Until the mood strikes, I have the bike itself base coated.

  • 3 months later...

I put off 40k hobby work for a few months, but I guess I'm a back for a bit. I have only worked on the honor guardsman in the past week, so once I'm sick of that and Kroot I'll get back to finishing the base for the Captain.

Luckily the helmet pictured previously was ugly, because I dropped it and have yet to find it. I made a better one in its absence, so that's always nice.

Don't worry, the paint isn't near finished yet. I still need to smooth out the Sun Yellow before I apply the fluffy yellow duckling highlight. The spots that are white with black wash will be painted my silver/stone color, and everything else white is undecided.

I need some opinions now. The riveted collar and ankles need to be colored, and I was going to paint each model with a color that would represent one of the the Company's the champion came from. I don't feel like busting out the green yet, so besides that one any suggestions on what Company this model came from?

The Forth still stands undefeated in the Field of Battle!

I love what you have done, and wish I had refound this tread sooner. Can't wait to see more, and love your painting style and the Yellow you built. Also have to say again LOVE THE HELMET!

To be fair Tybrus, you were only late to the party by a couple hours. Luckily much didn't change between my posting and your finding. :)

Hello Zincite. I'm glad some original posters refound this. These newer whippersnappers in the WIP forums wouldn't know yellow if I came up and spat in their eyes.

Do either of you, or a random viewer have a suggestion on what company this guard came from?

Well... 7th company pink would go well with your fluffy duckling yellow...

On a more serious note, 5th black would probably look good, but might be seen as just a different colouring instead of a company colour. Perhaps a deep-ish 9th company blue such would go well?

Though now that I think about it, pink might actually look good...

I've done some final modeling work before fully-on paint commitment. I've glued shoulderpads down, added rivets to the right wrist plate, a strap over the grenade launcher on the left wrist plate, and grenades to the right leg strap. Expect to see no more plastic bits showing after tomorrow.

Zincite: I just checked, and 7th is more of a Lavender color. I loves me some purple painting, but I think I'll hold off on the 7th on this model. A dark blue does sound nice though...

I'm just going with the colored box lines from How to Paint Space Marines. They didn't actually state the color, and I didn't remember seeing any examples of 7th company.

Please believe me when I say that today is hot. I believe my room alone is in the upper 90's. This usually isn't too much trouble, but the higher heats are actually causing the paint to dry at an accelerated rate. Perhaps I'll get to the second layer of yellow tonight.

Congrats Zincite, I am going with your suggestion. Pink/Purple it is. The pose on this model is screaming "tactical awareness", surveying the battlefield and some other such. Guardian-Brother Zincite will come from the 7th Tactical Reserve Company.

Rathul, Leonidus, Zxyogi, Tybrus, and 1000heathens: Stumble onto this thread and supply general input, posing suggestions, and company choices.

All that remains for this model is to test if the purples and tentacle pink are still fresh, and go out and buy some blue paint for the eyes.

" And lo, did the King of One Thousand Heathens, resplendant in his terrible armour of carmine plate and siren-mask, stumble upon the path of the IV Company of the Imperial Fists, confusion writ upon his brow. And thus, he spoke..."

Dude, green would be beautiful on this guy. Why question it? lol.

Seriously though, If you really don't want to bust out the green yet, I'd probably go with III company colors (red), or zincite's suggestion, just because no one does pretty pretty pink, lol. As for the pose, he actually looks cool right now, but I'd tilt his head down just a notch, so he looks more like he's searching for the next heretic to gut. Right now, he looks like he's looking for squirrels in the trees. Filthy, chaos-worshipping squirrels....

Good to see you back, man. Can't wait to see what else you got up your sleeve.

Actually I was asking you bunch on suggestions on the next set of marines. I've been saving green for a specific member if you must know. I've already settled on a purple/pink theme for this guy though, and I just put down the primary base coat. After this model I will retire my Liche and Warlock Purple. I'm pretty sure at least one of those colors is discontinued, so today is a sad day.

I was thinking about making a guardian with just a hint of the ferocity that all of your models show. Which company's colors would you like to see in this next, most heathenistic of marines?

Oops, misunderstood. My fault. A ferocious marine, you say? Oh, 8th company (grey) without a doubt. Nothing says furious and crazy like strapping a pair of rockets to your back and launching yourself into a horde of foes with a chainsaw sword in one hand, and an automatic mini-missle launcher in the other.

After looking at the bits and deciding what would fit well with an assault focused marine, I'm going with Corvus armor. As for weapons, I'll opt for the relic blade instead of the grenade launcher. I did a fit testing, and boy is this model going to be busy. Ignore the pistol, I don't like the bezerker feel it's giving off.

See that chainsword? Now double it in length. Add in some runes and glyphs, and you have yourself a relic eviscerrator. The serrated shoulder pad will have it's base thinned out to just the blade bit, and I might even sand it down so there's just a thin layer between the spikes and the shoulderpad.

Not pictured: a holstered pistol, a sheathed sword, a bolter with a big ol' bayonet, a damaged helmet, the heraldic shield, and a mohawk. Just use your imagination to figure out where it all goes. Once you finish, please tell me because I haven't a clue.

I did a sloppy job with keeping the paint within edges, so I'll have to go back and redo some yellow. Not pleased ^_^

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r120/Jaffar_Hasad/Dark%20Angels/HPIM1305.jpg

I'm also fearing flak from the Son's of Dorn community, but I'll probably opt out of the red head stripe and paint the helmet white. I haven't started though because I need to buy that blue and work up from that base coat.

I've also had a change of heart on how to position the shoulder spikes. The standard pad isn't man enough to handle the full glory of the serrated rims, so I'm upgrading to a terminator pad. Please ignore the Deathwing gibberish, it will be sanded off and replaced by a glorious fist.

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r120/Jaffar_Hasad/Dark%20Angels/HPIM1304.jpg

For bits and positioning, I think he will lunge with the jumbo left handed chainsword, and hold the bolter in the right in a rested position. I honestly don't feel like strapped it over his shoulder because I can never seem to find any room. Hopefully there is a tabbard with grenades and pistol in holster in the CSM box, as that would kill two birds with one stone.

I get to be a pink marine? Cool...

I like the spiky shoulder pad, it seems to fit nicely into the slightly (?) brutal nature of the Fists. Is the damaged helmet going to actually be on the marine, like the terminator one, or on the ground?

I get to be a pink marine? Cool...

Yup. That just happened.

I think I'll just strap the helmet to his waistline. To be honest I keep changing my mind on how to position it, and whether or not I should take the relic blade. I would look cool, but It wouldn't exactly flow well with the rest of the squad. I'm thinking instead I'll just have a wicked bayonet and having the marine lunge with it. I can later have an extravagant movement tray where it turns out he's actually slitting the throat of an Iron Warrior.

This is all in the concept phases. Trust nothing I say.

Quick update:

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r120/Jaffar_Hasad/Dark%20Angels/HPIM1311.jpg

I have blue! I've never gone from this blue to white, so this should be a neat experience. Just thought I'd show off Mr. Pastel. I used up all them money I'm willing to spend on hobbying on a mini Sturmgeschütz, so I had better not mess up the purple rims.

  • 2 weeks later...

Three in a row, my favorite.

I've been busy with spring classes and summertime activities, so progress hasn't been progressive. Luckily I have become incapacitated socially, so thank you human physiology for being so easily crippled. I found the right mix of colors to get a soft shade of blue from the Sapphire bottle, and the head/shield are about halfway to being the right shade of white. From there the only thing left is the small detailed bits, NMM bits, and bolter bits to paint. I stumbled over a nice tutorial on how to freehand the Fist onto a shoulder pad but it was in a Crimson Fist blog in this WIP subforum, and this section gets bogged down with a dozen new threads daily. If anyone else can remember this thread and the details, I would be be thankful.

The 8th company assault marine is getting a bit of love. I'm going for a cross-check pose with the model using the bolter's bayonet to slice an IW who will be added later on a display board. One issue I ran into was the name though. Brother 1000Heathens doesn't have the certain ring to it that I was hoping it would have had.

Pictures hopefully within the next 12 hours.
