amrogers3
Hello, I would like to do the following conversion but have two questions http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...howtopic=150948 not sure what size guitar wire to buy and where to buy it online (I don't have a store here in town) If someone could help me out, I would appreciate it. Brother Valerius
I would buy a whole pack of strings. Buy a pack of 10s (that is, the high E string is .010 gauge), which will give you a good variety of string sizes to play with. Strings do come in different gauges, so if you aren't entirely happy with the size, buy a pack with different gauge string in it. I'd also maybe consider getting nylon strings as well as steel strings. Nylons are, well, nylon, and so might be softer and easier to work with. As far as places to get them go, anywhere that sells music stuff. Ebay would probably do OK. Also check out Musician's Friend and Guitar Center, both will have a good selection of strings. If you know anyone that plays guitar at all, or even a friend of a friend or something, ask them to give you their old strings when they change them. They aren't good for playing any more, but they will do just fine for modeling purposes, and they'll be free! If you haven't worked with steel strings before, fair warning: the ends are surprisingly sharp and poky. I've jabbed myself a few times while stringing my guitar, and it can hurt quite a bit if you do it hard enough. I've never heard of anyone getting seriously injured, but it can be painful enough to merit caution, even without risk of serious injury. :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/220235-question-about-guitar-string/#findComment-2628766 Share on other sites
WingsOfTheFalcon
I'd avoid Bass strings, they'll be far too big for what you're looking for. 10s sound about right. Lexington
If you want ribbed tubing, but without the hassle of guitar string (it's really hard to bend right), I'd recommend getting a couple packs of these. Put a paper clip through the middle, and they become heaven to work with. Only one size, tho, so take that into consideration. Ironwulf
Seriously, my advice is to avoid the guitar wire altogether and order some Power Cables from Dragonforge. They're cast out of pewter and work soooo much easier than cutting and bending guitar string. YMMV. One of the previous posts said go with a "G" string but you are saying buy a different set. Would this set work: http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r213/amrogers3/Picture5.png Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/220235-question-about-guitar-string/#findComment-2629770 Share on other sites
Brother Valerius
That is right on the money. The three bigger strings will be wound (that is, have the ribbing around the core), so those are probably what you want for power cables and such. One of those strings will probably be good for your conversion needs, and a pack shouldn't be that expensive ($5 or $6, if my memory isn't failing me... but it's been a couple years since I've bought strings). Cool, thanks for clearing that up. I didn't want to go out and buy something that wouldn't work. I checked with the store here and it is right at $6. I'm going to go out and buy it tomorrow. WingsOfTheFalcon
One bit of advice, don't use your best set of citadel clippers to cut sections off as it will actually damage the clippers! (An expensive mistake!) You should make sure you buy yourself a cheap set of clippers so the damage is mitigated. I'd also advise caution/eye protection when cutting the sections off as they do tend to fly away with some velocity, I actually had the main length of wire whip around and embed the tip about 3mm into my hand when I clipped a section off. Be careful! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/220235-question-about-guitar-string/#findComment-2630153 Share on other sites

I need to go buy a set of cheap clippers. Good advice brother. Thanks.
