Space Wolves "Horde" Style Army?

Recommended Posts

Probably too many wolves to model, and obviously not super competitive, but I was I thinking that a horde type list could be made with Canis Wolfborn and a lot of Fenrisian Wolves. Say 4 squads of 15 wolves, plus a couple squads of Grey Hunters... maybe one or two small Cavalry squads thrown in?

Not competetive at all because you'll end up with a maximum of 2 scoring units in your army. Fenrisian wolves also tend to die to just about anything, even lasguns. And a smart opponent will just shoot away your scoring units and then go for holding one objective. If you can't contest that, you can't even draw. And a draw is the best you can aim for in almost all games. I would imagine you'll get over that pretty quickly and stop playing the list. If you get very good with it, I'd say you can pull off some wins. But honestly, missing out on grey hunters (best scoring unit in the game, la-di-da - you've heard it all before) is not ideal, unless you replace them with scoring wolfguard. I have 5 squads of the chaps in my list, and they do extraordinarily well for me.

I agree that the list is not competitive, but for different reasons.

Sure you only have two scoring units but the Fenrisian Wolves will be able to assault easily on turn 2. Meaning most players will shoot at them first. But without ATSKNF Fenrisian Wolves don't have the ability to hold up combats like they use to in EOT.

The way I see it that you'll need units to crack out transports, because the Wolves can't do anything about them waiting for Thunderwolf Cavalry to do so isn't very efficient. So you'll be looking to add a Rune Priest or 2 and 2 Long Fang Packs.

Now you're very likely over 1500pts. This puts us in categories of 1750+ which is a different style of play altogether and your opponent will have more ways of coping with your onslaught of Fenrisian Wolves.

I'll try and think how this list could be balanced though, but I think the points squeeze is just too great to make it work.

One thing that might help out balancing it is that, seeing as wolves aren't fast attack any more, you can grab up to 9 landspeeders (or 6, and some thunderwolves). Equip them with multimeltas and heavy flamers and you've got the anti tank part covered. You'll still struggle against MeQ armies, though because the S4 attacks do a poor job of getting through T4 power armour, let alone terminator armour.

Your elites will also be free to use your elites for dreadnoughts who can bring plenty of OHS-approved plasma cannons to the battlefield.

Heavy support I'd leave well enough alone because they'll be sitting back unsupported, and those are the kinds of units that my bikers love taking out first. Splitting your army isn't a good idea at the best of times, but in this list I can see it having the potential of being game breaking (for you). You need to hit in one place, and hit hard. And the place to hit is where your opponent's troops are concentrated. If you're both sitting at <2 troops choices, the game is back to even and potentially in your favour if you play it right.
