Coverfire
I am looking to build an Imperial Navy Airfield gaming table, possibly based off this image. http://www.ifelix.net/gamingblog/wp-content/img_1641.jpg What I would like to know is what would the Imperial Navy use as transport carries for command units and diplomats, and what other aircraft would be used to escort them and what size should I make the landing zones? Growler67
I can see the use of Chimeras as ground transports for the most part. Wheeled and relatively fast and secure. Anything more "diplomatic" can surely be constructed and if used in for gaming purposes, VDR'd. Scale wise, I guess that would depend on the kind or the sectin of the airbase. Fast attack rearm and refuel, then scale it for Valkyries. More utilitarian, scale it for ThunderHawks. Perhaps just one pas and then a collection of buildings/hangars/supply bunkers opposite with an appropriate amount of space between. If you are planning for bigger games or whatever, a pair of landing pads, one on each end. Any intentions for Air Defense emplacements and whatnot scattered about or are you concentrating mstly on the generalities? Perhaps you could make sandbag improved emplacements for mobile Air Defense aparati should an occupying unit bring them along or otherwise requisition them. They could also be used by troops assaulting/defending as a bunker or foxhole equivalent kind of thing. Aquila Lander, I believe it was called. There was a terrain piece that came with 4th Edition of one that had crashed. Escorts could be Valkyries or Vendettas, or maybe Thunderbolts. Some of the names of IG air/spacecraft escape me right now. Bergtorp
That depends alot on what kind of airfield. An airfield for planetbound aircraft like maraudrers or valkyries, like the one on the pictures, then you it would be scaled for those planes. Skyshield Landing Pad from GW could be a good start for that. My take on a starport is big open fields with big fat walls to protect the backwash. Love the idea. Hope you make it, and is waiting for pictures. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/220443-imperial-navy-airfield/#findComment-2631282 Share on other sites

Theres also the Arvus lighter, a small unarmed shuttle. The ones in that picture are Marauders or Marauder destroyers- the imperials version of the B-52. Coverfire
So roughly what size should I allow for the landing zones? and Yes I do intend to have generators and AA turrets and hopefully an interactive air traffic control tower. Most of which I will purchase through forgeworld, though the traffic control tower will have to be scratch built with foam core and Manufactorum parts. Also looking to build a couple of air hangers that are not for this table but hopefully will be used as an extension of the airfield, and will include super heavy storage hangers, barracks and load docks, and will be used as a separate table and for apocalypse battles. Grey Mage
The marauder class planes are about 15-16" long. Wich looks to me like those landing pads are about 24" long overall. Coverfire
Has anyone else had Pitch Black flashbacks after looking at the Arvus Lighter? http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Images/Product/AlternativeFW/large/ArvLit7.jpg http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Images/Product/AlternativeFW/large/ArvLit8.jpg Could be a cool Kill Team mission. Desert table with skeletal remnants of large beasts. Mission to to transport powercells from the main cruiser (that has crashed) to the only way of escape off the planet before nightfall. Each turn a cumulative amount of Spinegaunt brave the perils of what light remains to attack the kill team. Anyways, getting back to the original table. If the landing zones are 24" in length, then thats would be around 19.2" in width by my estimation. a little big to have three or four landing zones on a 6 by 4 table. As for the craft that I would most likely use. That would consist of the Aquila Lander, for dignitaries and possibly an Arvus Lighter for supplies or the dignitaries personnel. They would have been escorted in by either the Lightning or the Thunderbolt, perhaps both, but that is a little much for this table. I'll should also have a Chimera for transporting the officials but I just want to focus on scale and layout at the moment. hendrik
how about these; http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/...odId=prod20007a they seem capable to me to land arvus lighters, aquila landers, and valkyries. maybe you could include one lager landing pad to show this is just an outpost landingpost/refuel base(you could use sodacans as fuel depots or go for the more expensive forgeworld material... here's a list of utility vehicles i think one could spot as such a base: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-4000...MPLETE-KIT.html http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-4000...OWERLIFTER.html http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-4000...ERA-TROJAN.html gaint searchlights to search the skies during night attacks as well as providing light to your own base. http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-4000...AND-PLYONS.html http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-4000...Y-STUBBERS.html http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-4000...EARCHLIGHT.html http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-4000...E-PLATFORM.html first of all i'd think you need to decide what function this base will have, will it be a part of a great heavily protected airport? or will it be a smaller outpost, used mostly to bring in supplies and refuel?
