Well first post as a topic here, have finally completed my first BA Tac Squad in what will eventually be a force based around the 5th Battle Company, the 'Deamonbanes', at its core. These are the first completed pics that i have posted and are the first that have come out alright when photographed ( Now if i can just work out what the hell I did perhaps I can replicate it next time I am taking a photo lol).

Please feel free to add an constructive c&c on the painting and especially any advice on photography - and for those that may ask im using an Olympus Utough8000 on the macro mode and have no additional light sources. oh and anyone who can tell me how to make these bloody photos smaller that would be appreciated too lol.

Many thanks for the c and c guys.

In reply to the points:

Losfer - You did indeed, its a cracking box set and has sooooo many good bits that can be used across the range. Now I just need a load more lol.

Jimbo/Ebsolom/Vahouth - many thanks, I'd love to be able to take full credit for it however its a combination of a red technique blogged by Ironkobra on CMON and my own spin on it which I'll list below. Defo on the yellow chapter badge, totally missed that one lol.

Demolious - as requested.

Just as a pop quiz, i took this photo at a lower mb setting on my camera and it seems to have come out better, what do you think and for those budding photographers out there does this sound right? Or is my camera just mental. (Or indeed is it just me and the phot actually looks dog toffe lol). My main issue with my photos is that I want them smaller on the page itself - any ideas?

Bradley - I know what you mean about the cropping on the photos, drama is when I crop in that far the pictures get really grainy. Dunno what the answer is really.

Angelof sorrow - curse you, I had hoped no one would notice lol. TBH this is due to a modelling error when I put it together - there is a winged blood drop on his other shoulder which pushes the pack around. By the time i realised what i had done i'd sprayed the model and couldnt be doing with the fuss of changing it lol. But point taken and lesson learned.

And finally for my Red recipe.

Undercoat - GW Black

Basecoat - GW Mechrite red.

Wash - GW Devlan Mud.

Drybrush - Blazing orange then vomit brown.

Overbrush - 50/50 mix of Mechrite red and Blood red as swiped from IronKobra on CMON. When I do this I leave the last bits of Drybrushing visible.

**Optional at this point you can edge highlight Vomit Brown if you wish but I tend not to**

Wash - Baal Red.

Works for me like :P

If you can set white-balance manually with your camera, use it. Usually there's a bunch of presets like "indoors", "outdoors" etc and then there's usually manual. Set up a background thingie with a white cloth (I use a white t-shirt:P). Then set up your light-source, I use a regular desklamp which I cover with a thin shirt as the light is too bright otherwhise and leaves too many reflections. Then when you're happy take out your camera, point it at the white area and set the white balance manually. Then take you're pictures, it's important that you don't change the lightning in any way once you've set the white balance though. You wont get buy-this-product-quality-pictures, but you get descent pictures:) And then there's i.e photobucket which lets you crop pictures and use something called "auto-leveling", which basically checks what's the brightest part of the picture, descides that it's white and adjust the rest accordingly >SORT OF<. I don't know how to explain it properly:P

Anywho, here's two examples of mine that's been photographed by using the method above. A Wip and a finished mini.

By not changing the lightsource or the position of the camera I've managed to get descent pictures with the same "coloration" from different angles.

Sorry about the huge image-sizes but it's all I had to show at the moment. It just shows that with a lousy and a bunch of year old pocket size digital camera, some consideration to lightning you can get descent shots:) And as you can see on the larger model I'm having issues to get focus on the entire model, there's always something out of focus. Extremely annoying, so can't help you there:P

**EDit** Sorry for the traitor examples but I recently started on my BA-army and had nothing else to show, it's just about the photography itself anywho so I'm sure no one will mind:P

Bradley - I know what you mean about the cropping on the photos, drama is when I crop in that far the pictures get really grainy. Dunno what the answer is really.

I know what you mean about the grain. That said though, the grain is there whether the picture is cropped or not, it's simply more visible because you blow the image up (by looking at a smaller portion of it). There are two solutions to the problem, and both will make you pictures better in general.

1: Frame your shot. Basically, set up your picture so that the minis fill most, if not all of the frame. This will get rid of the need to crop the image, which will make any grain in your image less noticeable. Ideally, you can use a tripod, or even a stack of books to set your camera on.

2: Lighting, lighting, lighting! The more light you have hitting the lens, the less your camera will have to "work" to produce an image. When you are lacking light, your camera changes a number of settings in order to create a good photo. Unfortunately, most cameras don't work very well when the setting is dark. With some cameras, you can get away with shooting in poor lighting situations, but they're expensive. The cheaper, easier solution is to simply buy some desk lamps, set up a bright white background (tshirts, printer paper, whatever) and go to town. There are also some how-tos online about building a miniature photo studio out of a cardboard box. For a couple of dollars, you can take dramatically better photos.

If you have any questions, let me know!

One more thing. Zoom is not your friend. Instead of using the zoom function to get in closer to your mini, just move the camera closer. The zoom (particularly on cheaper cameras without high quality lenses) tends to screw with images.

New additions to the Strike Force from the 1st Company Vetrans in the form of Terminator Assault Squad Raphen.

Again any C and C welcome, though i should point out I am aware of the black spot on one of the knees, it will be fixed lol.

These are also part of my LPC 2011 vow, only the DC squad and the Drop Pod to go now.

Yay an honourable mention :D now I know how dudes like Seva, Ebsolom and Vahouth feel!

Coming along Nicely Cowboy, glad I was of help :D

No dramas Kobra, made my life soooooo much easier lol and I'm a firm believer in credit where credit is due. Glad you think they're looking ok, I'm fighting an internal battle with the perfectionist on my shoulder in order to get some bloody models painted rather than just started lol.
