Quick question

Just looking for a spot of advice;

I have a friend leaving games workshop in feb, so I won't be able to get any discounts on the New Grey Knights models.

I was wondering if I should "hedge my bets" by purchasing some models that are likely to be used in the codex now.

Such as:

Rhino/Razorbacks

Stormraven(s)

Predators ?

Depends on how much you are willing to bet on the rumours, literally! :P

Well, Stormravens are a for sure thing so nothing wrong with that. You could go for other established, like dreadnoughts or landraiders. The rest are supposed to be in there but you never know, Grey Knights do their own thing. I know that I am putting together a couple of dreads and a stormraven in anticipation. Also, I didn't think that the GW discount wasn't all that great but it's been awhile since I've hung out w/ redshirts.

Predators not so much for some reason. But I'm willing to make a bet on the top three. It maybe the only reason these were left was because transport wasn't such an issue in 3rd Ed. Now GW has gone all mech-crazy with MEQ lists and GKs are still playing catchup. I just hope they don't change the formula again too much too soon.

What annoys me most about this is that some naive players have taken this as being a 'fluffy' weakness of Grey Knights. Perhaps not helped by their preference to deep-striking.

Land Raiders, Storm Ravens, and Razorbacks.

The Grey Knights may or may not be able to use a Razorback, but the extra dollar or two for the additional weapon sprue makes it hard to pass up. Rhinos appear in every Marine chapter so I do not forsee the humble APC getting removed as a transport option. Many foot-slogged their Grey Knights and used Rhinos for their Storm Troopers. If Grey Knights keep a Shrouding like effect that tactic may stay the same so consider that before going overboard on buying Razorbacks.

The Land Raider is a staple in many Marine armies so at least one is a safe bet. In high point games you may consider having two. Someone else would have to speak on whether the Redeemer, Crusader, or standard pattern is the best value. I do not recall Daemonhunters having the best long-range dakka so the standard may be the most beneficial gamewise.

The Storm Raven will make an appearance, the pictures on the back of the Storm Raven retail box and the Grey Knight icons on the sprue pretty much confirm it. Investing in a single Storm Raven may be a wise choice, but going with more may be overboard unless you do alot of Apocalypse. When facing Blood Angel opponents I generally see them fielding no Ravens (maybe because no model exists) or on a harvest moon a single Raven. See if you can check out the Storm Raven stats in the Blood Angels codex to see if you might field it. I would assume cost and ability would stay the same with upgrades being slightly different.

This may seem like a strange answer but why not just get anything and then get it exchanged for GK when they come out. Maybe get a pile of eldar and then explain to the guys in the local store that they were an unwanted gift from a friend or something. And then get them all swapped. The excuses can be endless, I've even seen someone try 'someone started a facebook group to persuade everyone to get me a tau army for my birthday because they know I hate them...' and it's worked, it just depends how convincing a liar you are and whether your ethics will support such a move. Also this probably is best done with GW stores as it's advertised on the web that they do exchanges and refunds etc there, independant stockists might have thier own rules etc.

Otherwise only vehicles that are certains are land raiders dreads and stormravens. So you could try and pick up a couple of each. From what I've heard we will NOT be getting the rhino or any rhino chasis vehicles for the grey knights themselves but other units will have acess to them. One of the biggest differences we have currently is the lack of them and gw don't just want us to be grey marines. You could always get yourself a few of the metal terminators to be your 2 wound guys as well if you liked, and I suspect the inquisitors, henchmen and assassin models will all be valid in the new codex.
