The Chosen Sons of Lorgar

_Maelstrom_

Recommended Posts

Evening ladies and gentlemen, been a long time since I last logged onto these boards ( 3 years I think :D ). Back then I put up a few pictures of some Word Bearers before getting side tracked and then settling in over on the Ammo Bunker.

Speaking of which some of you might know me as Maelstrom over on the AB

Now what brings me back to the boards I hear you cry, well towards the end of last year I stumbled upon the log of Dan the Daemon and was amazed by his Nightlords. I liked the way he upscaled them so thought I would give it a crack. Now being to scared to start hacking up my word Bearers army I first made this guy:

A Raptors marine, out of spare parts to test out the method. I was impressed and with the result and surprised that the upscaling wasn't as time consuming as I was expecting. So I set about updating my Word Bearers, which brings me up to date.

I'm a big fan of the Word Bearers with them being my favourite army mainly because of their background. This whole project was spurred on by the fact I didn't feel that I had done them justice first time around. I have decided to adopt some of the terms from the Word Bearer Novels such as "coterie" etc to give them a little extra character too.

Just after Christmas I finished updating the last members of the first squad dubbed the "45th Coterie":

A scale shot next to a regular marine:

I've added a lot of pouches to them to give them a bit more of a realistic look as well as a few trophies, again inspired by Dan the Daemons work.

Currently on the Desk is a mix of things:

I've started to convert a plastic dreadnought into a chaos one, looking to the forge world dreads for inspiration:

been doing a few test models for some Bloodletters(summoned Generic Daemons) mainly to try and get the colour for the horns pinned down:

With these guys I have painted their skin to look like is wet with blood, and given them sort of molten magma effect swords just to try and give them an un wordly appearence

and last but not least I've been working on getting the spacers into the next squad of Word Bearers:

I'm not bothering to strip them as the paint isn't particularly thick or anything from the first time I painted them, and it will just add more time onto each squad.

well thats the end of a rather long winded opening post ^_^ I hope to stick around on here longer than I did back in the day and seen as I have a whole army to update and add a few units too I think I will be quite busy -_-

comments and suggestions are more than welcome ^_^

cheers for the comments guys :)

Can i ask, when you say upscaling do you mean true scale? If so what method have you used?

true scale I guess yeah, though I haven't gone to the lengths of bulking out their armour like I've seen other people do, my main aim was just to get them to stand a bit taller to look more intimidating :) as for method I used, I followed what Dan the Daemon had done with his night lords but added an extra spacer to the torso.

so its just cutting the legs at the thigh and shin then cutting the torso in half. The spacers are 1mm thick plastic card

hope that helps, I'm kinda crap at explaining stuff :(

That dread is amazing!! How did you get that detail?

Thanks sir :) Its mainly just down to practise and also the tools I use, the daemonic face was made largely with clay shapers which help to keep it smooth. the other details were made with a mix of sculpting tools and a good old craft knife.

The head is based around a bead which was just glued into place and I then sculpted over the top of it. For the daemonic face around the lascannons I mixed up a big batch of GS and did it in one sitting using a picture of the FW arm as a guide. It does still need tidying up and a few extra details adding possibly some horns :)

That Raptors Marine is epic

cheers dude :) I was originally planning on doing a small force of them to tie in with a Badab group log on the ammo bunker, but they have now taken a back seat behind the word bearers. I do have some pics of the other 2 I converted up but never got round to painting if your intrested:

I'm currently painting up 3 more word bearers so they should be up in a day or 2.

One question whilst I'm here though, do you guys thing that the plastic vampire counts ghouls with some GS additions would work well as like generic daemons? As I've got 20 of them that I brought cheap that have been lying around for a couple of years and thought I would try do something constructive with them :)
