Sons of Dorn Tactical Marine

Polus Lichius Alexandros the Great

Alexandros rose from humble origins on Archea to become the greatest hero of the chapter. Upon becoming Chapter Master he led the fledgling Sons of Dorn on a crusade across two segmentums to the Eye of Terror. Here he campaigned for centuries on end, returning to Archea a mere eleven times, although individual companies cycled through other war zones and their homeworld for refitting during this period. Alexandros was finally mortally wounded on the field of battle by a poisoned blade of the arch-enemy, but slaughtered its wielder and countless others before finally falling. He was rushed back to orbit to be taken home but died during the months long voyage. On arrival his body was placed in stasis as was his last wish…

T
he Sons of Dorn were created during M34 from Imperial Fist gene seed, although the original marines who started the chapter hailed from the Crimson Fists. The newly created chapter was given the planet of Archea as their home world to draw new recruits from. Their name was not heard by many until the conquests of their second Chapter Master, Alexandros, known by some as the great. He was the first master to have been born on Archea, and therefore the first master that was part of the honored lineages. He re-conquered many worlds from the clutches of the heretic and the xenos, but his largest conquest was near the Eye of Terror.

Several sectors were brought back into Imperial control near the Eye and now are considered to be under the protection of the Sons of Dorn, who have left a guarding contingent there for millennia. Alexandros served for almost 600 years before he was brought low by an infected sword of a champion of the plague god, Nurgle. He did not die instantly but instead survived for several months before the infection broke down his superior Astartes defenses. His body is now kept in stasis at the chapter’s fortress monastery on Archea, some say waiting for a cure.

T
he Sons of Dorn’s home world of Archea is a mostly temperate world, similar to Terra’s ancient Mediterranean area. It has very few large land masses and is mostly made up of island chains. The world never progressed far beyond a feudal state and most technology is reserved for the larger cities and the ruling elite. The cities are described by many as being majestic and breathtaking, built mostly of white marble with an architecture similar to that of Macragge’s or the ancient Romani of Terra. The social structure is that of a Republic, although the Sons of Dorn themselves are known to take emergency control when necessary. Family lines or Lineages play a very important part in their society and even extend into the chapter itself. Their culture has often been described as that of a Renaissance, with wealth prevalent through out most of the society (except of course for the indentured servants). The government for the planet is located in the capital of Capuas, a city described by the prominent traveling scholar, Danius Abnuss, as one of the 1,500 wonders of the Segmentum Solar. Its streets spiral out from a central court yard or forum which
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/40k_map-1.jpg
houses the mansions of its wealthiest citizens and the soaring towers of the political sector. Every building is carved out of marble and inlaid with intricate reliefs and sculptures depicting heroic battles from the Sons of Dorn's history alongside mighty heroes.

A popular attraction for its citizens and visitors is the Gladium, a towering amphitheater which is home to brutal shows of combat. Often criminals or slaves are tested in the Gladium by being thrown in against viscious Chrono-Gladiators, favored champions or sometimes even an Astartes. The latter usually only participates to fend off boredom, hone his battle skills or punish those he sees as particularly unworthy. It has been known on occasion however for an Astartes to be thrown into the Gladium as punishment for some failed task. He is stripped of his rank, armor, war gear and most prized of all, his name and therefor Lineage. If he survives for a certain number of games (for even an Astartes can fall to skilled enough opponents if enough are thrown at him at once) and shows proper penance for his failure he will be allowed to rejoin the Chapter with his rank and honor intact. While in the Gladium, or The Pits as members of the Chapter call it, they are shown no favoritism and are typically hassled by the crowd and shunned until they can prove their worth.

The Chapter's fortress monastery resides deep in the impenetrable mists of the World's Peak mountains, which according to ancient tradition was the home of Archea's gods before the enlightenment of the Emperor. It is both majestic and menacing at the same time, a strange blend of Archea's beautiful architecture, the Imperium's Gothic aesthetic and the bare bones functionality of a fortress. Very rarely has the entire Chapter been present at once and at most times there are only a few companies present. The Apothecarium dominates a large portion of the fortress and is kept under heavy guard as it contains many dangerous strains of disease, several of which are warp touched, which the Apothecaries use to further enhance their knowledge of the enemy and strengthen the immune systems of their Brothers. Attached to this in a weird mesh of religion and science is the Son's Temple of Resilience which houses the body of Alexandros the Great in stasis. The rest of the fortress is given over to armories, training grounds, Astartes' quarters and the usual assortment of facilities needed by such a building.

The rest of the planet is dotted with several other large cities but is mostly covered by small townships and farming villages. Of course each of these is usually dominated by a sprawling villa belonging to some member of the upper class. Truly Archea is a world of beauty with its rolling green hills, crystal clear seas, deep, luscious forests and majestic cities, however almost all of this is now nothing more than a fond memory after the Tyranid invasion. The world has been left bare and ravaged with only a few cities remaining and only a small defense force of Astartes left, most of the chapter having left to prowl the stars in their new space borne fortress.

L
ineages play a key role in the society of Archea and the Sons of Dorn themselves. It is a matter of great pride and honor for an Astartes to say he hails from an ancient lineage. Where most marine chapters try and distance their recruits from their lives prior to being inducted, the Sons of Dorn strongly encourage the family ties. It is not uncommon for great grandfathers, uncles, cousins and even brothers to be amongst the chapter’s numbers. The only relation not allowed is that of father and son as it is seen as too strong and usually the father was inducted into the ranks before his son was even born. This can lead to the son believing there to be a relationship that the father has no wish in being part of beyond the honor of a shared Lineage. Due to family names being possessed by many Astartes in the same company, sometimes even the same squad, it is custom to address their brothers by the first names. This is only allowed within the chapters ranks though and is seen as a slight against their honor if addressed this way by an outsider.

There are fears amongst other chapters that this practice could lead to nepotism, but this has never occurred. In fact the most famous lineage, that of Alexandros, has had many marines never pass above the rank of a common brother, however its two most famous descendants have both risen to the rank of Master and played a very pivotal role in the chapter’s history, something that many rival Chapters are quick to point out.

T
he Sons of Dorn are renowned for their advanced medical practices, mostly focusing on disease and how to combat it. The Apothecarium on Archea is vast and houses some of the most deadly strains of disease known to man. These are used to hopefully find vaccines to combat them and further strengthen the immune systems of the Sons. The plague of unbelief and the destroyer hive are the two greatest strains possessed by them. The Apothecaries have worked for millennia to find cures, but so far have been unsuccessful.

One of the trials upon initiation into the Chapter is to be exposed to a particularly nasty strain of disease and see if the neophyte can overcome it. In reality it is impossible for non-Astartes to actually survive, but that is not expected. If they can survive for a pre-determined amount of time they are then administered the vaccine and considered to have passed. Due to this and many other operations and procedures, Brothers of the Sons of Dorn are extremely resilient to most forms of disease.

One of the greatest secrets of the Sons of Dorn is the process to become Chapter Master. When Alexandros was on his death bed he made one final request, no future Chapter Master was allowed to be as weak as he had been. He perceived it as his greatest failure to succumb to the failure of his own body instead of a respectable enemy in combat. To fulfill this request his body was placed in stasis upon arrival at the fortress monastery to preserve the ailment that had killed him. Whenever a new Master is chosen he must pass a test similar to the one he took upon initiation to the Chapter, he must drink a small portion of Alexandros’ tainted blood. If his body can overcome the deadly toxins he is deemed worthy to lead the Chapter. It is unknown how many have failed this test, for the aspirants are given no help from the Apothecaries and must pass the test on their own.

Ah i see. Well many chapters have blazed a trail around the Eye and other locations but you don't always hear of them. Also this huge trail they blazed was way back in M34, history becomes a little muddied in the Imperium the further back you go, it is very possible that most knowledge of this has been lost or forgotten outside the Chapter.

Don't get me wrong, I like your fluff. I truly hope your "poor record keeping of the Imperium" defense works better than my attempt. Of course my attempt may not have worked because it was applied to gene-seed. Keep up the Good work.

Madwolf

It's happened before - see Deathwing, where Cloud Runner meets his grandfather when recruited.

Hawk Talon was his grandfather's grandfather, but yeah. ;)

This should be somewhere in the article:

"This is the work of fiction, any similarity or likeness to any events, places or persons living or dead is purely coincidental." - A little disclaimer never hurt, right? :cuss
