Rune Priest JottW - Best Death Toll to date!

I think what people don't fully take into account with Jaws is how powerful it is against ANY army. So many say, "Oh it's useless against high I armies like Eldar/DE," but is it really? How many weapons can you name that have a 1/6 chance of killing an Archon hidden in a unit of 10 Incubi... in cover... with FNP... from 24" away? Um... I'm out of ideas. Even the BA Blood lance only has a 1/12 chance of killing him (1/36 if he has a shadow field). Maybe an assassin, but that's it!

Even against other Librarians, you're still looking at a 1/12 chance of killing any non-vehicle non-flying model in the game. That's pretty absurd. Oh, you paid for Terminator armor? Don't care. Storm Shield? Don't care. Eternal Warrior? Don't care.

I'm not saying the ability is broken either, but it's just one of those Deathstrike missile type weapons that can win or lose games for you. There aren't many ways to snipe characters in 40k, but JotWW can do it better than pretty much anyone else... and can snipe multiple models at once. Also, never underestimate the psychological side of 40k, losing a 200+pt model that you thought was basically invincible on turn 1 can really screw with someone.

Like the Nightbringer :P... down into the ground you go you noxiously-bad-cheese-smelling-thing!

same can be said in tyranid games with DOoM... no one i safe with that either, spore pod in and cause massive army radius damage, for about the same points.

the same tyranid players who don't use DOoM are the same wolf players who don't use JotWW (not exactly, it's just a badly written metaphor), and the ones who do use either/both should not be treated any different than the ones who do.

i don't use Rune Priest at all nor do i use DOoM... but that's just me.

Basically, JotWW is an ability that condenses rolling drastically.

It has a fairly high expected value for kills, but you're not using it enough even if you cast it every turn to expect to see much of that play out, so it's a crap-shoot.

Oh, and on a sidenote, there actually ARE armies against which it has no effect. Remember that it doesn't affect Jump Infantry or Vehicles, and if your opponent isn't fielding anything else, it actually has no legal targets (besides your own stuff). I would say "oh this is a gimmick list nobody actually plays," but Blood Angels have turned that gimmick into a reality that I have to play against from time to time. So yes, sometimes it is literally useless.

On the topic of the original screenshot: Awesome.

how did you pass your phsycic test when you were so close to the prime?

I got very lucky and rolled a 9 on 3 dice. The turn before I didn't get so lucky and failed the test. I get why people say Jaws is too powerful, but every codex has powerful characters/weapons and as a general it's your responsibility to decide on target priorities.

The first time I came up against mephiston I hadn't read the new BA codex and focused on other targets. Mephiston single handedly handed me my arse on a plate, destroying 700+ pts over the course of the game. The 2nd time I played against mephiston I threw EVERYTHING at him and put him down on turn 1 and went on to win the game.

I'd never tell anyone, or expect anyone NOT take mephiston, a Jaws Rune Priest, a tervigon, or any 'too good' model. I'll simply assess how much of a threat it is to me, and if it's a big threat, then I'll prioritize that target.

But if you know what Jaws can do, and you don't deal with it and it hurts you, then sorry but it's your own fault. I think there is a massive difference between a 'cheesey' model and a 'cheesey' army list... twin-prince-lash-oblit lists are 'cheesey' because the whole army is a one trick pony, and you can't take away the threat with some turn 1 focused firepower on a single model. A single Rune Priest IS something that you can easily deal with, and I don't think any SW player should be ashamed of playing with it (at the very least point out the potential damage it can cause at the start of the game).

As many have said before, the guy was EXTREMELY unlucky failing that many rolls, it'll never happen again but was a real fun moment ;)

Regarding the images... yes they were taken on Vassal.

Cheers all

.... And if you play relatively low point games with SM vs Necrons all the necron player needs is that darned nightbringer and nothing can take it down.

...Or you're a Tau player, and your only real high strengh weapon on the hammerhead is ripped off you have no chance at all to even stop a low AV12 dread....

The game is filled to the brim with things that seem overpowered because it happened to you in that particular game, but in the end it's all circumstantial.

Just look at how beastly even the simple Khorne Berzerkers are when they chare :cuss...

...Or how incredibly strong the "cheesy" 2 DP with Lash and 6 Obliterators with Plasma Cannon combo really is against pretty much any army using moderate to high numbers of infantry models.

It's EXTREMELY rare to have an opponent miss such a deadly thing as placing all his/hers most vital units in a 24" inch straight row away from a rune priest with Jaw, most of the time you'll only hit 1 vital unit and some fodder..

Oh and also, please spell and compose correct sentences, sometimes it's difficult to follow the writing (don't take this as an insult, just makes it easier to make yourself understood correctly by others, thus enabling a good debate to go on without misunderstandings ^_^ ).
