BA Battleforce...Is it *really* worth it?

So I'm a new 40k player, I started getting interested around Christmas when I got the AoBR starter box. I, unsurprisingly, wanted to go with SM but hadn't heard of the Blood Angels until later so I put in an order for an SM Battleforce, 10 Man Tac box, Razorback and Devastator Squad...shortly after this I looked into the whole Blood Angels chapter, bought a Death Company box and I was hooked. I'd found my chapter!

I was also excited to hear of the new BA boxes being released (well, apart from the Stormraven :P). The Vanilla Battleforce was unquestionably great value so I assumed the BA Battleforce would be of equal value. But, the more I think about it, the more it puts me off. If we look at it in terms of value I'm not so convinced anymore.

The BA Battleforce contains: 10 Tacs, 5 Assault, 5 DC and a Rhino. If you break it down separately you basically get the Tac squad and Rhino for free. Free is usually(always!) good of course, but do I *really* need another 10 Tacs to add to the 30+ I already have? Do I *really* need another Rhino (for which I'd inevitably have to buy another stupidly overpriced "Razorback Upgrade Sprue" for? Or, should I just forget about the Battleforce and pick up 2 Assault Boxes and an extra DC box and paint them all up as RAS to total 20 assault marines?

While it's obvious that the Battleforces are aimed more towards getting people into the hobby, they're also aimed at long term players too. Let's just say that if it was a Razorback rather than a Rhino then maybe I would have pulled the trigger.

well the dc box can make assault marines as well, but you already figured that out :P tbh, if you dont want the bodies (they could make good sternguards for example with some work) or DC bodies then id indeed just buy what models you need. alternativly you could use that devastator box that tyou already have and turn these into devastators? i dont know man...

It comes down to what you can use and will use.

for me, no, i have 5 full tach squads, and plan my new rhinos to be able to be razors. what i need, becuase my army is still basicaly optimized (as much as 7000 points can be optimized) for 3rd, is a lot more assult troops... so i won't buy one. but if i was starting fresh, maybe, as i do like my tacs:)

The BA Battleforce box should be looked at as a conversion kit, really.

Turn the Tactical Squad into Devastators (use Hunter Killer Missiles from your vehicle kits to convert 3 of them to Missile Launchers).

Convert the Rhino to a Razorback. Make sure you magnetize the top hatch though, so you can switch it back and forth as needed.

Bash the Assault Squad and the Death Company boxes together to make a 10 man Assault Squad.

As far as value goes, we got the short end of the stick on that. Usefulness is also dubious, but if you need Devs and Jumpers, it's not a bad way to go (you get the Rhino "free" for use later if you decide to go mech).

This has me really intrigued. You have pics?

To stay on topic, if you are starting out, I would say its worth it. Like a lot of other people here, I have more Tacs than I know what to do with.

I'm working on one right now. I don't do the best conversion work, but I'll tack the thing together and take a pic of it later today.

I think it's definately better then the codex Marines Battle Force and the tactical marines aspect can be used to get some special weapons what not. Personally I am disapointed in that there are not more assualt marines, replacing the scouts with another pack of assualt marines rather then removing the scouts altogether would have been favourable and I don't feel tacticals do the set justice.

It's a pretty good starting set though I would say, not quite as flexable as the space wolves battleforce but at least it does not suffer from a plasma overload and packs some real special weapons.

Just buy the battleforce and get Combat Weapons + Pistol arms from other people. A friend of mine has 25-30ish pairs leftover from his chaos force. Space Wolves players will also have a tone of extra bits.

What BA are lacking is a 10 man assault box. Or even 10 man one without the jump packs would still be great. Just look at the SW 10 man Troop box http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/...dId=prod260003a

It has enough to make 10 close combat marines or 10 bolter marines. It also has thunderhammers, powerfists, powerweaspons, lighning claws, plasma guns, plasma pistols and a LOT of extra bits for conversions.

If you remove all the bolters, and spare bits there`s enough room and plastic left to fit the jump packs in there. So yeah, GW dissapointed me a little.

For me, the new BA Battleforce is definitely supplemental to my current Lamanters army. That, and since I already own ten Death Company models, the Death Company out of the Battleforce will have parts scattered through the rest of he force. The primary pieces available from them, will also go to flushing out more Assault Squad members. So in turn, it works out for me as I'll gain 10 Assault Marines, a Tactical Squad, and a Rhino out of the deal; all of which will look very unique and individual on the tabletop.

I don't find this battleforce useful to me. I have already bought enough RAS and Command Squads (Special weapons, powersword, chainswords and Apothecary!). I want to make magnetized back/jump packs, but the bolters are of no use, so the 10-man tact is totally useless. The Command Squads and DC have enough regular backpacks to replace the jumppacks.

But overall, if you are a beginner, and you do not have a particular army list in mind, this battleforce could be handy. If you have decided, which list you want, you'll inevitably find useless bits there.

It's a bargain! There are so many bits in the DC sprue that you can create some really nice kit-bashed units. One possibility is the DC is constructed with backpacks and bolters. You then have jump-packs and close combat arms to put together another 5 Assault marines from the tactical legs and torsos. The 5 man tac squad is pretty good to have in the fast rhino, or there are probably enough arms knocking around, depending on the special weapons you use with the Assault squad (any of the special pistols are in the set, plus the flamer with the tacticals) to make them Assault troops too. If you really don't want the tacticals at all, put an ordinary torso on one of the DC (the bolter will cover most of it) and make a captain or a sanguinary priest out of all the left over bits of bling on the DC sprue.

I'm buying it just for the DC, assault and Rhino (cheaper) and the tacs as some-one notes are a free gift.

If you are running them as BA then the amount of parts you get in the DC kit means you can spice up almost every one of the other 15 Marines with something displaying the BA iconography.

But as I said, you are *probably* better off just buying what you do need through discount retailers online

For *certain* people 10 tactical marines and a Rhino are just not very useful.

As plague angel said, it is entirely subjective.

You can buy the Land Raider Terminus upgrade for £10.50 from GW and have the parts for a Razorback Turret, which leaves you at a profit of £12 still. You can buy plenty of BP and CC arms from Bitz sites for good prices as well.

In the end to get the most out of it, you will probably have to spend money to supplement all the gaps in the battleforce which will mean you aren't saving anything in total. But if you actually want to run a Tactical Squad in a Rhino in your army then it is great value for you.

I'd advise going onto Dark sphere, found here.. You can buy a Space Marine battle force and some Death company for £60. In this bundle you'll get:

1x Tactical Squad

1x Assault Squad

1x Combat Squad

1x Rhino

1x Scout Squad

1x Death Company squad

Scouts are awesome, plus you can use the combat squad to boost you death company or assault squad.

completly understandable, some people build tac marines though:)

pretty much the battleforce isn't really for the internet savvy, or people wanting to have an assault oriented BA (yes surprisingly not everyone does this, though i will admit more oftent they do) people wo only go into the store and shop, i can see the value, people who have several armies or freonds who need parts, i can see the value:)

in general, i wound't recomend it as a starting pont for a ba army:)

I can see myself buying this set in these circumstances:

1. I buy 10 jump packs from a bits dealer and use a lot of the bits I already have to turn the tacs into assault marines. In this scenario I'm up a rhino which I can keep, or sell it.

2. I use the bits I already own and turn the tac squad into a mounted assault squad. This isn't the best option for me, as I run my assault guys with jump packs.

3. If I played mech, I'd get some normal backpacks for the assault marines and/or death company. I have enough bits that arming 5 guys with assault weapons is possible. I could probably kit bash a razorback turrent. Seeing as how I have 3 razorbacks and 3 rhinos already this option isn't likely for me.
