Virus on homeworld?

The Shiny One

Recommended Posts

Now and then I ask myself if its a good idea to include a virus in the backstory. So now I will ask you, what you think of it, so that I am sure:

Is it a good idea to involve a virus infection/plague, that kills all or a lot of inhabitants of a homeworld? Or any other world in general?

Clearly there are some very powerful virus in the 40k universe, like the ones used in the virusbombs, or warp virus...

It just seems nice for a change to have no one to blame, for the chapter involved.

It isn't a stupid idea - which is good. The question is why are you including it? If you are just including it for no reason, then yes it is a bad idea because it adds nothing to the chapter. If you are wanting the chapter to fight a battle it could never win against something it couldn't see/blame, then it is actually a pretty good idea. Ideas are about context.
The one thing I would point out is that the Imperium always finds someone to blame. If a virus/disease wipes out a planet, Nurgle would be the obvious suspect, and given the incredibly robust and virulent nature of his diseases, they would probably fire bomb the planet into oblivion, just to be safe. If you Chapter is infected and is slowly dying to a disease they cannot fight or cure, then you can expect the Ordo Malleus to show up and either A.) Quarantine you forever, or B.) Destroy you down to your component atoms to ensure you can never threaten the rest of the Imperium. Still, if it's something they encounter multiple times throughout their history, perhaps on worlds they are attacking/defending, and they have to confront it's unstoppable horror each time, it could be an interesting twist?

I dont have a concret concept. As the current chapter I'am working on hasn't even really contact with planets.

But it would be cool to have a homeworld die for no obvious reason and the only ones surviving are space marines because of their über immunsystem. forcing them to search for new recruitment ways and so on.
