Scultping medium

Hey all, I am thinking about embarking on a rather large project, sadly it is not my original idea, but something none the less I would like to do. I recently purchased a 1/6 scale "Cable" statue/model kit that I would like to convert into a Space Marine, here is a link to the kit I got, not from ebay though;

I found a link on the internet a while back of a guy who did the same thing, never could find a picture of it completed though, so not my idea, just going to do my own thing with it.

I will mostly definitely keep the pose the same and build the power suit around him. I am feeling like I need a challenge and I think this would definitely tax my skills. Now I dont have a lot off experience in sculpting, and I am trying to decide what medium I want to sculpt with. I would prefer not to use green stuff as that would make this build really expensive and heavy, not to mention to experience in using green stuff far have not been fun...Also, it has to be a self hardening medium, as I will not be able to "bake" the model once it is done, that would melt the vinyl.

So I turn it over to you, the good people of the B&T :blink: , what other mediums are out there to sculpt with?

People of Dakka? Why do I get the feeling that you just copied/pasted this post while you were also posting on DakkaDakka's forums?

Well, I for one, would suggest Greenstuff or Gray stuff (ProCreate, an epoxy putty similar to Kneadatite.) If you do some shopping around, Kneadatite (again, Greenstuff) isn't super expensive when you buy it from sources other than Games Workshop. You can buy a large ribbon, or two "tubes" of blue and yellow in a single package, for usually less than $20. Much more cost effective than buying a 6 inch ribbon, blistered at the local GW store. ProCreate has properties similar to greenstuff, but is gray in color. Both of these are epoxy putties that do not need to be baked.

There are other putties, such as Milliput, MagicSculpt and Aves ApoxieSculpt. These are also epoxy-resin in nature, but have different consistiencies. Some of these dry to a rock-hard state. The trade off is, that they are a bit more brittle, and sometimes don't hold such fine detail as green/graystuff. (That is one of the benefits of green/gray... It's slightly flexible when cured!) In their favor though, these harder putties are easier to sand and file when cured.

I would definitely steer away from Sculpey, SuperSculpey, Premo, or Fimo. Those will all require baking of some sort, which will destroy your Cable vinyl kit that you're building on.
