Pre-heresy emperor's children 10th company

I've been working on this army for quite a long time, with a 2 and a half year break from the hobby in the middle, but I finally have enough done to play actual 1500 point games without having to proxy half my army. I've made them to be the 10th company of the emperor's children (Saul Tarvitz's boys). I have a model that I am going to paint as Saul, but I'm putting it off because it involves doing greenstuff sculpting that I'm not too confident with yet. Anyways, I hope you guys enjoy these pics. Also I know there's quite a lot of mk 7 and mk 8 armours in here, I have more mk4 suits that I'm going to eventually mix in there, but for now this is how I roll.

As said the purple is amazing and so is the gold.

The only two criticisms I can see are that you have some mark 8 armour in a pre-heresy army and that when looking at the tactical squads it looks a bit like a mass of men, not 10 individual heroes of the Imperium. A little conversion or freehand details would really set the models off and help to present the Emperors Children mentality to show off their deeds and how win they each are.

Oh, god... When I clicked the thread I was a bit tired and didnt really think they would be much to look at. A few min later I was picking up the peices of my jaw from the floor...

I LOVE the gold and the purple is very well done. The use of Mk IV-kits, grey knight arm and the commander model is great. It all really fits my favourite legion. How long did you work on getting your NMM Gold ('cause that is what it is, right?) so perfect? I am reluctant to try it myself for fear of failing, and the new army I'll have to build if it turns out I can manage it a 10th as well as you do.

Long commentary and all that, but I just want to heap praise on you, 'cause the models you show here are awesome. Really, worthy of awe.

ps: I take it the Vindicator is not done? It seems a bit plain/bland considering the shiny gold details on the troopers and Whirlwind. ds.

Thanks for the kind words guys, makes all those hours I spent worth while. The vindicator is infact still WIP, it still needs all of the detail work and a final hilight layer, but it's in a done enough state that I didn't mind showing it.

@Koran: I totally agree that my troopers kind of have the identical drone thing going on. I plan on adding a lot more flare and freehand to at least the sternguard models, but I'll have over 50 infantry models in my finished list, so I don't really have the energy or drive to personalize every marine.

The gist of how I did the purple was:

- Prime black

- Basecoat of 2 or 3 thinned down layers of GW liche purple

- Go over joints and grooves in the armour with black

- Wide hilight with a mix of approx. 75% liche purple and 25% GW tentacle pink. Two points here; 1) I eyeball my colour mixes, so numbers are approximate, and 2) GW tentacle pink was discontinued, Vallejo game colour squid pink would be equivalent.

- A hilight with 50% purple and 50% pink inside the first hilight

- Third hilight with 25% purple and 75% pink inside the second hilight layer

- Super narrow hilight with pure pink (this part is a real pain for vehicles)

When I'm less busy I may post up a more detailed tutorial.

I'm currently working on some devastators, hopefully I'll have pics up in the next few days.

Thanks for the details on the purple, its very nice.

Good to know on the freehand. Please do a little bit for each marine though.... I promise everyone here (including me of course) will lump on LOADS of praise when you do if it helps to motivate you :P Personally I find those little details actually give me more drive to continue as its a nice break from the monotony of highlighting armour :P
