Stormraven + Furioso WIP + proper Dreadnoughtstowage

Edit: I added pictures of the basecoat.

Hi folks.

Here is a bunch of pictures of our Blackbox Stormraven plus matching Furioso. As I was not satisfied at all with the solution provided for transporting the Dread I chose to find my own way. I like the result quite a lot actually. Materials used were Plasticard, the parts of the landing gear that were left over and some magnets.

Additionally I strengthend the fuselage and attached an additional landinggear to the backfin. The original connection between backfin and fuselage seemed too thin to me thus the reinforcement. The additional landing gear makes sense to me as the main landing gear does not appear to be able to support the fully loaded Stormraven. It also helps to round up the shape of the Ravens back imho making it as square at the tail as at the front. ^^

Painting starts tomorrow as long as the temperature is not too low for basecoating.

I do like the Armypainter Spray a lot. I had some problems with their white basecoat in the past but obviously got a bad can. I did a two stage basecoat in order to achieve a brighter red. The Pure Red itself works quite well on its own but as I will use Quickshade on the Raven, it will get darker and so I wanted a brighter red.

I am eager to hear your opinions. :)

Nice, but hen I do like both models. Good idea with the extra thickness on the tail.

My only 2 crits are, the "foot" at the back of the SR looks a little out to me anyways, and the holding clamps for the dread look like they are going to block off exit/access to the back ramp.

Other than that good job.

Hey, nice work! :P

My only criticism is that the plasticard work stands out as such, in that it doesn't have the detailing or shapes that the rest of the model has. I'd suggest putting a few unobtrusive bits and bobs on to give it the same multi-layer armor effect that the rest of the Stormraven has.

Also, I'll note that these pictures make me realize just how freakin' big the Stormraven is. Holy cow.

Beautifull modification. Your solution to how the Stomraven carries the Dread is very ingenious with the magents used to lock it into place. But with the Dread hanging there like that I hope he dosn't suffer from vertigo. I wonder what a screaming Dread sounds like?

Painted and weathered, that is going to be a great piece to swoop down onto the table.

Thank´s all. :P

Dreadnoughts are fearless, so no problems with vertigo and the like (I suppose^^). The access to the rear door indeed is blocked. I just imagine that the arms rotate to the side or something like that after the Dread was dropped off.

@ Lexington

The extra landinggear indeed has additional detailing which I think works well in matching it with the rest of the Raven. Cutting out the squares was a pain to get right. You are right on the fuselage though. A cut out rectangle on each side would have done the trick I suppose. I didn´t really notice this to be an issue until you mentioned it. It is too late now but with the next SR I build I will take that into account. I think it works well enough though with the paint on. Yeah, the bird is big, slightly shorter than a Vendetta but bulkier with the Dread loaded.

Looking very good, can't wait to see the next stages of painting! Would be nice to get something similar going with mine, but not willing to risk my shiny new model!

Quick question though, how is it with the Army Painter spray? Spray it GW white then AP Red, ink, highlight, detail and job done? And do you paint the marines in the same way? I've had a ton of trouble getting Blood Red to look good on my marines, if AP Red can fix my problems, that'd be fantastic!

That's the spirit, Debauchery101. :(

@ Rinion

Well, it is GW white, then AP Pure Red, then paint details and highlight (one step Fiery Orange in this case), then AP Quickshade Strongtone and finally Vallejo matte varnish.

I did two test pieces here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/cplhicks/sets...57623591653202/

Those were painted GW Blood Red though insted of the spray. The result should be the same though. The white undercoat is not necessary as I wrote above but I like a bright red. The grey of the plastic dulls the red a little. I am really satified with the result of the AP spray. Make sure to use very short bursts from not too far a distance and you should be fine. As the instructions say.

What makes you dissatisfied with your red?

I'll be keeping an eye on this. I've basecoated a couple of test minis with AP Dragon Red and dark tone dip and it provides excellent coverage, but I forgot to buy any anti shine, so my tests are really...erm, shiny.

But I was more concerned with how it would take to a vehicle. There is a notable absence of big, single colour pieces on the AP website, except an old dreadnought, so I thank you for being my guinea pig for me before I dip a £41 stormraven with disasterous results... :(

You're welcome. It is my first try as well so I am glad that the Raven is from our Store's Black Box thus no expenses besides the work itself for me. ^^ The key is to apply the Shade quickly and thinly enough so that it gives an even coverage without too strong buildup in corners. Their website actually has big models now, look at the Ork gallery from some weeks ago where they used the Shade on some Bad Moons Battlewagons and Trukks. The recommend to thin down the Shade a little with turpentine. I tried that (my can is slightly old now) and it works well.
