Death Company Stormraven

Plague Angel

Recommended Posts

GW posted this picture and it got me thinking:

Sure, a transport of any sort is a good idea with Death Company. And it makes sense to have black Rhinos and Razorbacks and Drop Pods. But Stormravens and Landraiders are much more rare and valuable. Stormravens in particular seem to be highly mobile and used for deploying and re-deploying everyone — pun maybe kinda-sorta intended, but they aren't used as dedicated transports the way other vehicles are.

So how much sense does it make, fluff-wise, to have a 'raven sporting the red X?

Note that I'm not condemning people who have done so. Your models are awesome and you should feel awesome. I'm just wondering if I would do so, and I'm not sure.

Maybe they rampage inside the vehicle. So they have a special one for the DC to keep the interior of the others in an acceptable condition.

: D

Read this and the first thing I thought of was Battle Brothers "bitching" about having to ride in a SR formerly "used" by the DC

"Man, they tore the seats to hell and spilled soda everywhere."

"Not to mention not returning thier seats to the upright and locked position"

I think it's a good idea to let the rest of the battlefield know where the crazies are. Especially allies.

I think it would be pretty crucial for mid to high DC count chapters to have at least one specifically for them. It's the best way to deliver the most DC (& DCdread) in one go with precision... while keeping them contained in the mean time.

I'm with you Plague Angel. A stormraven is supposed to be a transport, so when they've dropped the crazed lunatics that is also known as death company they might have to get to another location and pick up a squad of devastators. I wouldn't paint a raven black (but it sure looks good) but I don't mind if someone else does. I don't have a Land raider yet, but if I do get LR's I'll keep 'em red.

It feels like the vehicles that belongs to the Armoury should be red. A rhino or maybe a razorback can be black, drop pods also, but the bigger vehicles I'd paint red. If I am to buy a SR or a LR thats dedicated to my DC I would probably give it a squad marking that shows whats inside it from the start. Just a small, black square with a red x in it.

But thats just me.

So the DC is like teenagers on speed? :)

Imperial Armour volume 2 has a Flesh Tearers Baal Predator that was painted entirely black (no red crosses tho) by order of a Chaplain for unspecified ritualistic reasons.

In EPIC whenever I'm throwing Thunderhawks around I always take an empty one to go in first and draw of the enemies fire, I can certainly see the BA doing something similar with tanks or storm ravens in the face of overwhelming odds, and might not some Chaplains decide that such a 'sacrificial' vehicle might not itself be worthy of induction into the Death Company even if it has no members on board?

I do not see the chapter sacrificing one of 51 stormravens unless the battle is truly epic.

Honestly it's kind of whatever you want my death company is white which I think is the coolest! :) A white storm raven with red x's would just be awesome! Because the storm raven is a transport in general, I'm not sure if I want to paint it red or white.

Chapters can house thousands of support staff, so painting of a vehicle on the eve of battle shouldn't be too much trouble.

Sorry I'm not much help but I am enjoying this thread. There have been some very funny posts so far.

IMHO, the most cowardly and dishonourable way to deliver our DC is via anything other than a black vehicle with red saltires (or in the case of our bizarro brothers - white with red saltires)!!! ;) Second only to painting one with DC heraldry and having nothing aboard!?!

I have one of each transport in my All DC Strikeforce (1750pts) - my Stormraven is soon to be enroute via a 3rd party vendor. I relish the look of dread when I deploy a BLACK rhino with Captain Psycho aboard; a BLACK Redeemer with 12 nutters aboard; a lone BLACK drop-pod with a DC Dread aboard; and soon, a BLACK Stormraven with Astorath, Lemartes and their 8 nutter-brothers.

I plan to play this list as soon as I get my SR assembled and blinged, and hopefully I won't have to tweak it too much to get maximum scary. I suppose, in the immediate future, a BLACK Stormraven will elicit that intent quite nicely.

I expect my storm raven will carry DC more often than it carries anything else, but I just don't know if I'm going to paint it black. I really don't want to have to buy a second one, and I don't know how often I'll be using DC anyway.

The real reason DC Stormravens are black:

So here's the deal. The Blood Angels have techmarines. And techmarines, like all Blood Angels, love laser tag. But the laser tag place onboard a strike cruiser has a limited set of hours, so the techmarines have to find other things to keep them entertained. Like getting wasted and painting stuff. When they know that Lemartes, or Astorath, or a significant number of DC will be coming along to tear things apart, they figure why not paint a Stormraven black?

More in line with canon:

Chapter techmarines paint Stormravens assigned to the Death Company to prepare the machine spirit of the mighty vehicle for its upcoming battlefield role.

;)

I should have a storm raven by the end of the month... Just gotta bring it back from Spain :D But when I have it, it's DEFINATELY getting the DC Treatment. More of a display piece than anything since I don't get much gaming these days. I have started a thread somewhere about it, starting off with my Lemmy. Gonna do a whole squad with sang guard packs, a Dc dread (possibly my Moriar) and a Storm raven all in the same scheme (LOTD blue/black style). See it finished in about a billion years ;)
