Sorry if this is a silly question but why do most people take the captain instead of like Gabriel Seth? they don't differ much points-wise. Why do people always pick Captains/Reclusiarch's/Libs as an HQ choice instead of the "named" ones? Also why do some people take Honour Guard instead of Sanguinary guard?

Some people like to take unnamed characters because its easier to name that character and pretend he is you! :P

Fair enough ;) i guess that way you can slap yourself when you don't perform well on the battlefield!

That, and there is also the thing, that not every local tourney allows special characters.

A lot of it depends on the style of list.

If you want a DOA/jump heavy list, the special characters either don't work (Tycho, Seth) or are very expensive (Astorath, Dante, Sanguinor), though to be fair my jump heavy list almost always uses Astorath as HQ. If I want a cheap jumpy hq, I go to a librarian.

In a mech list, Seth or Tycho would be far more likely to be used by me.

As for HG versus SG, the main difference to me is the built in priest. But overall I tend to like Vanguard over both. I do need to test SG more though.

For me I love fluffy armies and therefore feel compelled to have a captain leading my company into battle, then i read the BA list and cried, The special rules are annoying to lose but i feel from a purely fluffy perspective that the loss of artificer armour and glaive/relic really hurts. My Heresy era captain is gonna be counts as Dante now (I am re writing his rules, not changing them but re doing all the fluffy explanations etc) not because Dante is the best choice but because his wargear fits best with my captain. I am not even using the dante model as my captain has a sword but he looks kinda simillar, It just sucks that the actual entry for the captain is, I'm not gonna say lame but, kinda flat and un inspiring.

I"m confused as to how a captain not having a glaive or AA makes him un fluffy, and how if the power of the itesm doens't matter, why you don't just call them power armor and a power weapon...

not trying to get in your face about it... it just doens't add up as to why you'de use dante rules, maybe i'd need to see the mini.

I hate being a naysayer here, but...

— and this is just me:

I don't really like the idea of using the rules for a death mask to represent a model from a time when Sanguinius is still alive. I don't see how Dante's rules work for a Heresy-era Captain at all. Especially since you complain about the lack of a glaive, and Dante doesn't have a glaive either? His wargear is: power axe, melta pistol, death mask. Nope, don't see how it fits more than a Captain would, artificer armor aside (and you could take Astorath or Tycho for that).

Also I'm with Weasel: if you want a Captain to lead your army for fluff reasons, model him as fancy as you like. He just gets a 3+ armour save. No big deal.

and if you're reading this thread then please feel free to check out my new army list in our Blood Angels army list section. My 1500 pt army, The Reclaimators! is a list I've made to combine theme and effectiveness to make a fearsome army.
