Imperial Missionary/ Hierophant

Brother Captain

Seems I'm on a painting spree lately! I think Inquisitorial minis are accepted here so I'll post him now before they remove henchmen from the new Daemonhunters Codex. :o Let me know if you think I should alter anything before varnishing.

Thanks Jeffy.Gee! I was expecting some criticism about the plasma gun but TBH I can't bring myself to paint a glowing effect on any plasma weapon unless it seems the the weapon is about to be fired. I always imagined that the coils would light up as the weapon is charging to fire. I know it's slightly absurd to try being realistic on a 40k mini but I just think it would look odd. On the other hand I never wondered how 10 marines can fit in a Rhino. Go figure. :o

Myself I would assume that the plasma core is kept glowing constantly because it is powered up fulltime when on the battlefield - why else would you keep the plasma core out in the open if it wasn't for it to cool down?

When it fires, it'd ofcourse give off extra light as it heats up, but I like to think that it is glowing as long as it is "loaded". On the other hand, it is still plasma in there, and isn't plasma more colourful than grey? ;)

That is just what I think, however! It is a wonderful model. Is the robe red with a very heavy wash or? And the face is wonderful, is the eyepatch greenstuff or is it actually from somewhere?

Hmm good point. I always imagined that the plasma core is under these iron vents. You're correct that it must be switched on at the battlefield but this mini looks more like a wandering traveler and less than a warrior. It may also be that this mini is going to be a hierophant in an Inquisitor's retinue and since he can't take a plasma gun it'll be ceremonial (aka just for show) so I didn't want to draw that much attention to it. :)

Now about the robe... It was the result of a failed experiment with a new recipe for reds (started with a mix of Scab Red & Chaos Black and highlighted all the way to Blood Red - works well on power armour though) so after the highlights appeared too chalky I washed it with Badab Black, rehighlighted it and then glazed it with undiluted Baal Red. I liked the dark colour so I kept it. And yes the eyepatch is a part of the mini itself. Cause horrific scars covering most of his face are not enough to show us what a battle hardened missionary he is. B)

In case you wana try the recipe for the face:

- Basecoat with Talarn Flesh

- Wash with Ogryn Flesh wash

- Highlight with Dwarf Flesh

- Highlight with a 1:1 mix of Dwarf Flesh & Elf Flesh

- Highlight with Elf Flesh

- Glaze lower lip with Baal Red

- Wash Scars and a little bit of the surrounding area with Baal Red

- Rehighlight scars with Elf Flesh

Great model, it oozes character!

As for the Plasma gun i think it looks fantastic as it is. People have said that it should always be active when on a battlefield, but what if he isn't on a battlefield? You'd only activate something like the weapon as you close to battle.

Very much like the flesh tones, i have saved your recipe so i hope to try it out soon!

Varnished and ready to enter my display cabinet!
