Starting a new chapter...

Lord Scytha

Recommended Posts

Starting my own DIY chapter and just need help making sure that it is unique. Been browsing old codices, miniature catalogues and so on trying to see if anyone come up with a similar colour scheme.

I've think I've seen a similar in an army showcase in WD but it was in paler colours and quartered instead. Couldn't find it when i searched through all my old issues though.

sm.php?b62c=@iagtx_hk8Yt.hcLAt@@@@@@@hXbsb@_@@__@@@....@@@@.@.@@@@@@@@@@@__@@@@@@@@@@@@@__&grid=TRUE

(You always see halved, or quartered colour schemes or where one or two arms or hands is in a diffrent colour but you never seen a one where just one leg is diffrent so I decided to make one. After playing around with the painter, this is the result.) (Got to love the painter)

I also had a name; Heralds of Dorn but unfortunately I saw that it was taken. ;)

Like Heralds though. Have an idea that the chapter is of a compassionate type, like the Salamanders during 3rd Armageddon and Heralds sort of conveys a positive, less martial feeling. Sort of a herald of a golden future or the like.

Other Herald names I've considered.

Heralds of the emperor/empire. Taken.

Heralds of Terra. Too arrogant.

Heralds of Humanity. Too bombastic.

Heralds of Mankind. Too weird.

Heralds of Man. Too discovery channel and too non-pc.

Heralds of Pax. Actually love this one. A SM chapter named the messengers of peace, classic. If I ever make a peacenik chapter with the anti-atom logo as chapter badge I'm so naming them that. But I want these guys to be more true to the 40k world.

Why humanitarian in nature? I ask because the Marines of Dorn's stock are some of the most uncompromising Astartes out there. It just doesn't seem all that fitting. I'm not saying that it can't work, because it most certainly can, I just feel that there's going to need to be some explaining to justify it.

Heralds of Harold?

Heralds of Death? (my original chapter form RT era...green and gold...heraldry...hmm...are you in the SCA?)

Imperial Heralds?

A Fistful of Heeralds?

For a Few Heralds More?

Star Heralds?

Space Heralds?

Angels of Heraldry? (HAH!)

Marines Pursuivant

Arthur

Cornets of Doom

Death Trumpets

Death Crumpets

Death Strumpets

Strumpet Crumpets...

...I like that last one. But I digress...I think my blood sugar is low, I'm getting silly....

How about Golden Heralds?

As far as Herald of Man being not PC, isnt the IMerium often called the Imperium of MAN? Besides, the setting of 40K isnt pc to begin with, it full of meeting races other than your own and killing them to take their stuff.

I dont love the one leg different color thing. I dont particularly hate it but it just doesnt seem to work for me.

I know I dont like Green and Yellow as my most hated (and respected) Pro Football team use those colors ;)

I agree that the one colored leg looks a little out of place.

That said... Go Pack Go! :P

Darn, never realized that it was the same colours as the packers or aussies used. Ah well.

Short answer. Because the Salamanders doesn't have any known successors according to the SM codex and I wanted the chapter to know it's origin. Besides Heralds of Dorn had a nice ring to it. Plus yellow armour.

Long answer. The idea that I have floating around is not that they wouldn't be uncompromising but that they would be driven by a noblesse oblige of not only protecting the citizen of the imperium but also giving them aid. Sort of the Knights Hospitalers whom besides making war to protect pilgrims also built hospitals to give them succour and aid.

Yes, they would fight with the same relentlessness as any other chapter including virus bomb a planet if that was the most logical option but they'd rather fight hopeless holding actions against a foe to give civilians a chance to escape where most chapters would just abandoned a planet to conserve their strength.

Just like the story about the Salamanders in 3rd Armageddon the chapter would not just settle for destroying the foe but also assist with the rebuilding once the war was over.

It's more a sense of nobility and the ideals of chivalry where a knight was expected to be a accomplished warrior and protector on one hand and at the same time be noble and compassionate on the other rather than the pacifistic humanitarian ideals of Betrand Russel and the 20th century.

Of the loyalist legions that imagery would most fist Salamanders, Ultramarines and Imperial Fists. As for Salamanders see short answer and I admit the Ultramarines would probably fit this ideal best but after the obsessive pandering GW have done during the latest codices to make Ultramarines stand out like the only existing loyalist chapter I'm just filled with antipathy towards them. Which is a bit sad because I suspect I'd quite liked them if they would just have been first among equals as they would have been without GWs campaign to make them first without equals.

So that only left the fists, which I've always liked, to model them after. Plus Yellow armour

Heralds of pax?

Cross of English and Latin?

Heralds of peace?

Not the best choice for a SM chapter.

I know but then again the irony would kill. ^_^

Anyway, I take it that at least the colour scheme is unique and I'm not copying it unintentionally.

Heralds of Woe?

They could be Salamanders descendants. It only mentions in the official background that there were no 2nd founding successors. The latter ones are still good.

I like the idea of them being nice in a chilly distant sort of way. They could be seen by the citizenry as embodying both creation and destruction.

The Marines themselves would not have to get too involved with the actual rebuilding of the worlds they conquer. They employ experts and savants to requisition what is needed and employ local denizens to do the grunt work (providing temporary jobs in the post-nuclear aftermath) whilst browbeating the Rouge Traders to bring food from the nearest Agri-world to support the populace whilst it gets back on its feet. The Rouge Traders could be bought persuaded to join when they point out that if they don't the Mechanicus is going to refuse to trade them spare parts for their ships because the Mechaicus make use of the chapter in some of the more volatile situations the Explorator Fleets get into.

Your chapter does not turn into a chapter of Bob the Builders. They do not help people, they teach people to help each other.

Just ideas.

I would definitely go with the Sally route. Also, for the colors, 1) They happen to be Packers colors, so Steelers fans will naturally disagree with them, and 2) on a more serious note, the one different leg really bothers me for some reason.
I like the paint scheme, especially the brown eagle, for some reason.

It's supposed to be charadon granite. A greyish black. I blame the painter.

Will prolly change the colours since all I can think about now when I see them is Aussie national teams. Darn it.

Hmm... Never thought of that. That Sallys could have successor chapters that was founded after the 2nd founding, just that they didn't have any during the second founding. (Wonder why not more SW players have used that excuse.)

Wasn't really thinking that they should do any actually building themselves. More give advice and technical assistance along with providing supplies and equipment.

First, someone has definitely used Heralds of Woe. I remember Octavulg making a comment about it. Something like HoW now, green cow.

Second, the reason Space Wolves haven't used that excuse is that their geneseed is too flawed to be used(See Wolf Brothers), so naturally, they don't use it.

Plus yellow armour.

I don't know where this info came from but.... The word yellow can be used as an adjective meaning cowardly. ;)

Sort of the Knights Hospitalers whom besides making war to protect pilgrims also built hospitals to give them succour and aid.

Other way around. The Knights Hospitallers were at first monastic hospitaller order and later changed into armed force.

No exactly.

Currently there is no known Salamaders' successor.

Tell that to Rogal Dorn and the Imperial fists. ;)

True but it doesn't change the fact that for the majority of their existence they were a knightly order that both waged war mercilessly and did humanitarian work at the same time.

No second founding but both Black Dragons and Storm Giants are suspected to stem from Salamander stock according to GW even if it isn't certain.

Anyone know why the Salamanders didn't have any successors at all. To badly mauled at Istavan?

While not officially stated, it is widely accepted that the Salamanders can have successors. There aren't any known problems with the geneseed that would stop the use of it, and they probably still have the resources to form a veteran cadre to train the new chapter.

I like the scheme, though I'd make the green darker since the overall color is yellow.

It could be a crouch/aim thing, left leg angled on the ground while the right leg is angled to steady the aim. I think its nifty to see a line of green right legs before the muzzle flashes, but that's just me.

@ringlancer - I'd use half those names on your list for a DIY chapter B)

Not a bad idea about the leg.

However, I've dropped the colours at least because whenever i see that green and yellow i can't stop seeing the Australian national rugby team uniform.

Have come up with a couple of new colour schemes. Just one question; what's the forum policy of spamming posts with images from the painter?

As for names, played around with the name generator and got the following:

Doom Hippos

Star Destroyers

Dancing Fists

Omega Sisters

Shrieking Amazons

and my personal favourite: Battle Sisters!!!!!!!

(should i take that as a sign and change my allegiance perhaps?)

It did come up with a few good ones though.

Blood Hornets

Iron Eaters

Storm Guard

White Eagles

Though at the moment I wouldn't mind a name referring somehow to wardens or similar. (Not latinzed though for obvious reasons.)

Is it okay to post several pictures from the painter to show off different suggestion for colour schemes?

How many images can you spam in a post/thread before some mod gets irate?

Ferrata already answered this in a PM. Ta for the reply Ferrata.

Right after the Aussie colour fiasco I've come up with a few new colour scheme variants.

I've found I really like halved schemes or were the upper body is in one colour while the limbs a contrasting one.

The first ones is Hawk turquoise and Sunburst Yellow

1. sm.php?b62c=@iaj0o_hd3IG.hozqS@@@@@@@@@.@@i8TzJiakk7@@@____@@@@__@@_____@@@@@.._____________.iakk7&

2. sm.php?b62c=@hd3IG_iaj0o.hozqS_@@@___@_.__i8TzJiakk7___@@@@@@@@_@_@@@@@@@@@@@.._________@@_@.iakk7&

I really like the colours on these next ones and especially the halved one.

Unfortunately they are extreemly similar the the colour schemes of Children of the Light SM's by Neil Dutton showcased in the 2nd Ed. Space Marine Collectors Guide. Think his are quartered though. It's kind of hard to determine.

3. sm.php?b62c=@iaj2F_h81dX.hozqS____@__hGxVO_.__i8TzJiakk7___@@@@____@@__@@@@@_____..@@@@@@@@@@@@@.hTugi&

4. sm.php?b62c=@iaj2F_h81dX.hozqS@@@@@@@hGxVO@.@@i8TzJiakk7@@@________@_@___________@.@@@@@@@@@@@@@.iakk7&

Then finally a halved Hawk turquoise and bleached bone variant. Only trouble with it is that it has a very close resemblance to both Marine Errant and Angles of Redemption.

5. sm.php?b62c=@iaj2F_hd3IG.hozqS@@@@@@@hXbsb@.@@i8TzJiakk7@@@____@@@@__@@_____@@@@@..@____________.iakk7&

So what do you think. At the moment I think my favourites are 3, 4 and 1.

But as I said they are very close to plagiarism at the moment. <_<
