Pre-Heresy Iron Hands

Doghouse

Recommended Posts

Using the Space Wolves codex to put together a 1500pts army for the annual Ammobunker Bash to be held at WHW on June 11th.

As I am a bit of a pre-heresy/heresy era fan I'm using the new FW Mk II and Mk III to create the Iron Hands with the army being set somewhere around five years after being reunited after the discovery of their Primarch Ferrus Mannus.

This setting is important to the theme of the army as it will limit what I can and can't use in the army in terms of models and will dictate which around variants I can use.

So like I say the Mk IV armour is long off in the future as are the use of Terminator armour with this army being set somewhere around forty to sixty years into the crusade so I'm going to be relying on plate armoured marine to do the fighting for me.

These are the two suits I have available to me:

Mk III

Untill the fabled FW pre-heresy dreadnought is released I'm using the Mk IV Ironclad as the basis of the force leader. I've gone with the twin lascannons option to give the force a bit of punch.

The army itself will consist of the following:

Venerable Dreadnought (Bjorn the fell handed)

First Sergeant Torren Mordecai (Wolf Guard Battle Leader)

Iron Father Saargen (Iron Priest)

Nine Astartes with one flamer (Grey Hunters) x 2

Ten Astartes with one flamer and one melta gun (Grey Hunters) x 3

Five Devastators with four missile launchers (Long Fangs)

Landraider

Once this is out of the way I'm going to be backing them up with an Astartes Super Heavy in the form of a converted Gorgon. I may later make a model of Ferrus Mannus to lead them and haven't completely ruled out the chance that a Warhound from one of the titan legions might make an appearance.

These pictures have come out a little darker and blurrier than planned but give you an idea of what I'm up to (really need a new camera...). What I'm doing is rather than go for hard highlights on the edges, which I'm not that great a fan of, I'm using washes to hopefully create a more natural look.

For this apothecary I'm going old school RT with the original colour scheme for iron hands medics. He'll just be a regular marine in game terms but thought it'd be a fun little conversion to stick in one of the squads. :)

Cheers guys! :HQ:

Had a change of plan for the Mk IIs. Rather than paint them as IHs I've decided to include some Emperor's Children as there were strong bonds between the two Legions at the time of the great crusade. The 1500pts will still be Iron Hands all in Mk III but these twenty will be used as back up if needed.

He's still a bit too dark at the moment and I think that I need to add some Warlock Purple to the mix in order to lighten the scheme up. I'll be adding FW etched brass aquilas to the torso to make them a little more authentic.

Irons Hands are one of those Legions in which you can't stray away from the main theme (the whole boinics on every model thing) however you've manage to do that with a great finish.

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread

Cheers guys! ;)

Korvydae: Welcome aboard mate, great to see you here. :) Yeah I'm hoping the brass etch will work well, might have to do a bit of trimming of the torso to get it to fit.

Bewley: Well if they do turn around and say they had a full on bionics obsession from before the time I set my army I can always say that the bionics are under the armour.

Pulse: Yeah the legs are painfully thin which is a real shame, they're even thinner than regular plastic marines which kind of makes them a little top heavy. Other than that they are nice models.

Reyner: Unfortunately it's likely to be a one off. Had a bucket load of overtime come my way with a fair whack left over after bills were sorted. I thought I should spend the cash on something worthwhile for a change rather than just flitter it away here and there like you do. :P

monkeyninja1988: Yup, they will definitely one hundred percent have aquilas ;) (The EC that is...).

Mr Malevolent: The bare head is from the Cadian Command Squad. Quick and easy way of making the armour more imposing by just using the smaller guard heads.

Brother Marasiel: :(

Blindhamster: Cheers mate, I did have to part with a lot of internal organs to do so. Mk III were totally worth it though, seriously nice models when you give them the Phobos pattern bolters as well.

Just got to wait for camera to charge then I'll whack up some progress on my apothecary.

Cheers mate, it's simple trick but seems to work really well.

Quick update

Got a bit more done on the Apothecary and have started to basecoat the bolter.

Think the camera might be on the way out though as the pictures aren't great.

Don't worry mate there will be more updates over the weekend. Been doing eleven hour days at the moment and am shattered. :D

Next week I'll be on normal hours so will be able to get loads done. ;)

I'm still playing around with the transfers at the moment but the first twenty guys are undercoated and ready for me to start basecoating.

Bit of an update.

Still going with the worn look I've got a bit more done on the land raider. I'm going to go old school and add a small banner from the top.

I've also done a little more on the medic, rather than use the standard symbol I'm using the black version of the clan icon.
