Decoy
While we all know Loganwing is prevalent (Hello to you lurkers from damned near every other army out there playing Space Wolves but painted like the Rainbow Warriors... ;P ), I'd actually like to sit down and throw around some ideas for (what appears to be) a semi-new concept: Powerarmored Logan's Heroes. Or, for laymen, Logan leading up to 6 squads of just straight PA Marine, with each squad custom-built thanks to their wargear, perhaps one per squad taking T-armor (or something) to act as a Commander. Has anyone aside from myself tried this, or even given it a thought? If not, what are your thoughts on it now? I'll type up my own after a bit of intel-gathering from you awesome folk here in the fang. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/221704-logans-heroes-list-type/ Share on other sites
OnlyInDeath
I was actually thinking of this last night as an apocalypse army...I think to truly make it shine, you would need that points ceiling. but seriously, imagine 10 dudes with wolf claws led by a wolf priest charging out of a LRC, maybe toss in some dudes with SS's for some invulns. Pref enemy from the priest, rerollable attacks....i cant think of much that would be able to stand up to that kind of 40+ power weapon attacks. You would just be looking at a 1000pt unit. and as far as shooting, yeah, a standard marine with a combi bolter at 23 pts ea. Just a standard "shooty" unit in a pod coming down, maybe throw in a fist or two for come CC capability, and you are looking at sternguard on crack for one round of shooting (20 plasma/10 melta/ridiculous crazy gouts of flamer hell) and then still have beefed up marines for combat thereafter. I love love love the idea of a list like this....just not exactly sure how to make it work, and there would be a TON of conversions to do. It's also a good poor man's 13th Co. list. Customize some drop pods to look like warp gates (my idea was using 2 of the support beams for the pod to form a frame, make it look like it's bursting from the ground, put some sort of funky portal-lookin film inside of them, treat the storm bolter or DWML as "electrical discharge from the gate) and you have an all pod army with custom made "grey slayers" and "stormclaws" bursting out from portals all over the battle field, led by runepriests and supported by some longfangs on the cheap. The Son of Russ
See you would have to go to the lengths of getting the bits, and then maybe even magnetising them, and then making them fit in army lists. Of course, it is ridiculously powerful, like the wolf claw guys mentioned last post, but extremely costly on a unit with a 3+ armour save. Quillen
I have used it about 5 times. It works ok. You have more weapon options and they do not cost too much. I won the games I played except for one in which I Drop Podded and got eaten alive. I went with 5 Cannon fodder gaurd and 3 Power Weapons and 2 Power Fists. This seemed to really shine and could eat just about any other marine squad it bumped into. That said it runs about 295 points. With Rhinos. Still I have awesome success. With more specail gear they cost way too much and you start getting low in model count. And sence your using Logan to do this it gets expensive fast. And they look really cool with all the specail gear. Alot of people will get frustrated at all the power weapons and moan a bit. lol Still they see it's legal and your losing a few models to make those few beefer and usually accept it as balanced. Did I mention they look all sexy geared out. lol I also tried a mixed Pod List. 4 PA guys and 3 TDA guys in a pod. 5 Pods of them. This was interesting, but expensive and had few pods. So they were easy to cripple. Still with 3 pods showing up you could dump a ton of fire on some things and cripple them. But you model count is low. So if he gets lucky on counter fire you will have a hard game. I had 2 wins and 2 draws with this list. Once on the ground they are foot slogging and it is hard on objective missions to get enough to compete. chino
I was actually toying around with this idea last night, but with less of an assault focus. Instead, I tried to take advantage of the massive amounts of special weapons Wolf Guard can take - specifically the Combi-Plasma and Combi-Melta. Most of them were smaller squads mounted in Razorbacks with the Lascannon/TLPlasmagun turret, save for one ten man unit of 5 Combi-Plasma, 5 Combi-Melta, and a Wolf Priest with Saga of the Hunter. I have a personal favourite as far as Wolf Guard only squads go: 6x Wolf Guard w/ 6xCombi-Plasma, 2xWolf Claws(Separate) Razorback w/ Assault Cannon or Lascannon/TLPlasmagun I've never seen another squad simply tear into heavy infantry like these guys. You could drop the sixth man to round it out to a nice even 220pts as well, which works amazingly for taking mid-field objectives and keeping things away from it (like pesky Terminators). Of course, there's the Combi-Melta Drop Pod setup which is pretty straigh forward, but are somewhat of a suicide squad. Alternatively, you can give this same squad Terminator armour and a Wolf Claw each and throw them in a Drop Pod for 250pts - I love this en masse, especially against other Terminators, Crisis Suits, and even AV 10-13. I think a Wolf Guard army in general makes the best use of either Land Raiders or Drop Pods, seeing as how we can mix armour within out Wolf Guard squads to take advantage of the superior weaponry Wolf Guard can take. Couple this with the ability to take all sorts of close combat weapons, and you can put together some of the most devastating units in the game, in my opinion - at a cost, of course. ORKILL
A friend of mine runs Logan, a Rune Priest, and 5x 10 man WG squads, each squad has 2 TDA w/CML and stormbolters on the rest...and I think he has a few combi-meltas in the mix.
