Wolf Lord Ragnar Blackmane, the Allslayer

Black lining is the painting of black into crevices, joints, gaps between armor plates, etc. so as to define the various parts. The resulting effect looks like black lines have been painted in, thus black lining.

Here's an example of a model I painted many many years ago (whenever Battle for Macragge was released, 2004 I think) that illustrates the effect:

I've been trying to do that lately, but all my lines come out way too thick. What kind of brush and technique do you use to get them so sharp and crisp?

do one of two things

use a black wash before you start blending up and if your neat you wont have to

or

use a fine/detail brush, water down you paint and get some on the brush

roll it into a nice tip and paint in you black lining.

try using just the very tip of the brush, and you should avoid you linbe thickness issue.

hope this helps

I gave this a try last night and it worked much better! For those wondering, here were the things I changed from when I did it wrong:

1. Water down the paint - not too thick or it will require too much pressure to apply and thus give you thick lines, not too thin or it will "wick" down the bristles and run, it has to be "just right"

2. Make sure the brush has a nice sharp point - recheck this and reform the tip after every "dip" in the paint

3. Apply with a very light hand - don't put any pressure on the brush or the line will be too thick, just go put more paint on the brush tip if you need to (I needed several "dips" for each line)

Your tips really pointed me in the right direction! It's very much a practice/muscle-memory thing. I'll keep practicing. Thanks!
