Stormraven : The Skinny

The forward turret placement is best for maximum field of fire and gets the weapon barrels closer to the target (assuming most will be in front of the Stormraven). With the rear intake/air scoop left off there are limited arcs between the engines and tail.

The first battle with my Stormraven wasn't auspicious. Last weekend the local GW Store held a multi-player Apocalypse game to conclude a 2 month 40K campaign. The Stormraven came on in turn 2 carrying a squad of 5 Deathwatch terminators, a terminator Chaplain and a Red Hunters Ironclad Dreadnought, plus a locator beacon. Two squads of Red Hunter terminators were on the ground advancing toward the objective through cover and a second squad of Deathwatch terminators was waiting to teleport in.

The plan was to unload close to an objective surrounded by battling Space Wolves and Necrons, use the beacon to bring in the second DW terminator squad and leave the Stormraven free to provide gun support for the embattled Imperial Guard at the next objective. After moving onto the board the Stormraven fired at a Renegade Guard Valkyrie with a missile but only knocked out a weapon.

In the Disorder phase a Khorne force with 4 Obliterators arrived. The Obliterators walked on, fired lascannons, penetrated the Stormraven and caused an exploson. All passengers survived unscathed but became ground sloggers. Without a ranged weapon the Ironclad contributed nothing significant to the battle. Engaged in later turns by ranged weapons fired by Imperial Guard troops, vehicles and Obliterators the Stormraven passengers were short of the objective at game's end.

It remained contested by the few surviving Space Wolves, the Red Hunter terminators having fallen to Obliterator plasma cannons and close combat with Khorne berserkers at the objective. The reserve DW terminators had to walk on due to the board being too congested for safe telporting without the Stormraven's beacon. They killed an Obliterator attacking the rear of a Stormblade then fell to a Demon of Khorne.

The original transport plan of a Landraider for the first Deathwatch terminator squad and chaplain, and a Dreadnought drop pod for the Ironclad would probably have been a better choice.

If I was going to take storm ravens, I would take at least 2. One, right now at least, is too big and scary. When the opponent sees it, they get that "must kill' look in their eyes. If you field more than one, you raise their panic higher and divide their attentions between multiple targets. Don't give up on the SR. :HQ:

I haven't given up on the Stormraven. It was the only good target the Obliterators had when they arrived and was a priority target for the Khorne player who'd heard scarey things about its potential.

Like you I've concluded two Stormravens should be fielded simultaneously. Other SM gamers agreed so a second Stormraven building/stretching project is about to begin. The first one took 3 weeks to seamlessly lengthen 2.5" and paint - tedious but the result was worth it.

i'd love to see pics/ instructions ..... (hint, hint)

There are half a dozen photos showing how the hull and tail were lengthened. This morning I photographed the nearly completed model but several shots of details were out of focus. The photos have been downloaded to my computer - I'll try to post the good ones this evening.

The bright morning sunlight showed the dry brushing was not up to my usual standard. It looked OK under indoor lighting but under natural light doesn't look good enough for me. I'm going to mask the decals, cockpit and engines and respray with chaos black primer. This time I'll restrict the dry brushing to hard edges. The effect I got by doing the entire body with Caradon Granite looks too dusty. You'll see what I mean.

By Throne.... I just ordered FW Landraider Doors and the top part of the assault ramp for my SR...

Does this mean I can't use any of it??

Seems like the side doors are the smaller Rhino sized ones, so the larger Landraider sized ones won't fit without modifications. Unsure about the assault ramp door.

Came across this picture from a German Stormraven contest:

Seems like the assault ramp is just a Rhino rear hatch?
