Thunderhawk scratch build

Recommended Posts

Ive been working on a little project recently acting as a distraction from my Spears of Ultramar (bad bad distraction!) and (as you might have guessed) its building a thunderhawk.

The main body is mostly done now (well the main lower portion at least).

Hope you like:

But as Im sure many of you know, it gets to the point in most projects where you have to do something that you worry you're going to regret in the near future. And now is one of those times, as you can see:

ARGH..... Well here's hoping this isnt something Im going to regret....

Not so much interest (Thanks pulse) but I will carry on

I havent had loads of time but Ive managed to get the mold of the cockpit done and the a first cast. As it is you are seeing it after comfortably under 5 mins of clean up and a quick soapy bath to get the release agent off it.

Original scratch build:

The mold:

And the cast:

And why cast it? Well why would you want one thunderhawk when you can have a whole fleet of them :D

Really nice job.

Even chopped up roughly with a saw, it's likely that your version when cast up will be a quicker and easier to assemble and clean up than the FW kit. I've looked at a few casts (FW) of it in the Warhammer World store and the moulds really are in a poor state, with some very obvious tearing around vents etc.

Firstly I should apologizes for the quality of the pics. Dont have a better light right now and the resin doesnt photo well. I might put some black wash on it see if that makes things clearer in the future.

Secondly, thanks for all the replies guys. Its really nice to have the encouragement.

Ive got the top of the tail made, molded and cast up so heres some pics of the original and the new version (one straight out of the mold with literally nothing done to it and another after about 2 mins of work to tidy it up.

And Ive got one of the back halves of the hull cast as well. You might not be able to see on the pics but all the detail is still there which is cool. You should be able to see that Ive cast it up so that the extra material is on the side that will connect to the other half of the hull. This was so that I keep all the detail as crisp as possible and without any flash and the flash that is there can easily be filed down. Cunning 'ey? :teehee: Again there is the original first so you can compare (not that the photos make this easy)

Ive got the front of the right hull cast up. This meant dipping into my new resin and slanesh has obviously been at work as it has a slightly pink tinge! ;p

I got some better pics so you should be able to see the detail a little better. Annoyingly there are two small areas that didnt come out amazingly from the mold. The first was just something a little stuck in the mold and should not be fixed (which is the tubes on the side) but that shouldnt be a problem in the future. The second is a little bit between the riveted "bar" and the armour around the bar. Its only 1cm long and easy to cut so Im not redoing the mold (something that would cost me a good bit) when I can fix it easily. But it just goes to show everything cant always be perfect....

As always, thanks for the support guys!

Ive been a bit busy recently so didnt have a chance to get a lot done. But I finally had a chance to get the molds for the rest of the lower hull done and cast. Annoyingly I not have to buy more silicon to make molds from which means waiting till I get paid.... Oh well, gives me a chance to work on my Spears of Ultramar who have been lacking some love recently.

Back to the thunderhawk. As I said I have the lower hull pieces cast and in the typical way of resin they werent perfectly straight as you can see:

Urgh.... UGLY! But a quick dip in hot water and a little bending and they are pretty acceptable (there was always going to be a small gap to fill with milliput so Im fine with it).

Ive managed to get some of the gaps in the front sorted but (and I imagine I had a horrified look on my face as it happened) as I was carrying the left side I dropped it! I was expecting it to do a typical forgeworld resin and turn to powder but instead just the back corner came off. Instead of casting up another one I decided that I would just milliput that as well instead of wasting resin (you can see the result at the back).

And with the cockpit.

So most gaps filled now so I will continue with that and wait for money and then silicon to arrive :)

Hey this looks great! I'm getting ready to start spring break and well this is going to be my project. My question is, if you dont mind me asking, how much money have you put into the mold making? I know that once I build one I will want more and so will the other gaming buddies... The other question I have since I attempted a thunderhawk before and ended up not liking the template, so it became a cool terrain piece, what are you doing about engines?

Again awesome work!
