DA Thunderhawk - Warning picture heavy!

okay here we go - as in my introduction i'm currently scratch building a Thunder hawk to take my DA army over 8K points!

For most of the fuesalage & wings i used 2-3mm thick Plastic card (sorry have NO IDEA what that translates to in fractions of inches!) and for the detailing I used 1mm thick plasticard

Build and plans call for 3 Sub assemblies - Cockpit, Fuesalage & Wings - It started off that way ... but i got so excited I just had to put it all togetehr! lol!

Detail is fantastic on the plans but it will take patience to cut and assemble!

The plans also calls for the interior of teh bay & cockpit.... in the interest of my sanity i skipped these sections! (I may possibly build another one that will inclide this in the future)

this look fantastic how much did all the bits cost and where did you get them from please and how easy was it to build . sorry for all the questions

No Problem Crazy8

At the moment i got the Plasticard sheets from Modelzone (a UK model store) at about 99p a sheet (JV20, JV30 & JV40 - this relates to the thickness of the plasticard as per thier supplier) so far i've used 3 sheets of the 2mm (JV30 / JV40) and about 3 sheets of the 1mm (JV20) - note that i kept all the cut offs and tried to use as much of a sheet as possible - the cut offs are being used for the smaller detailing.

So far i've been working about a month or so on it - for an hour or two - (soem days more - some days less)

for the plans see the link at the top of the page - it will take you to a whole stack of PDF's - and just download the three for the thunderhawk.

PS: thanks for the comments!

Thanks for posting this up here! It is looking great so far  You need to hurry up so you can rub it in the faces of those BA players who just got Stormravens :D

I do have a quick question, this is the most detailed set of TH plans I've seen and while I've got a lot on at the moment I may have to give them a go at some point.

My question is do you think it would be possible to use magnets on the wings and hull so they can be taken off for transit? Do you think the model has suitable surface area?

It is a possibility - There is enough surface area and as there are a lot of hollow sections in the model it would be viable with strong enough magnets - you eould have to plan ahead of time as i think you would need to make recesses for stabalising rods etc.

I may do that in a future build.

@ Mud Duck - no problems with the plans - only sugestions - the wings (the thickness) could be a bit thinner but are great as is. Also you need to be accurate! measure twice cut once aand make sure both sides are the same! - and finaly check that your wings are level! lol!

most of the problems i encountered (as mentioned above) is due to my impatience! and rushing to get it done

Very cool! I know what my Wolves are getting soon!!! :P

EDIT:: I downloaded the Thunderhawk, 1,2, and 3 files, what is the one called Thunderhawk.cdr? Do I need that one?

.cdr format files are used in the Coreldraw program. It might be for people who use that program, instead of downloading .pdf files.

On the measuring side for a little extra cost it might be worth people having the plans printed straight onto the plasticard if they know anywhere nearby that is able to do so.

I used the same plans for mine, didn't put quite the same amount of effort in to all the detailing though. Wanted to see if the plans would work first, so now I can see a second one with all the details will be worth the effort.

Nice work on the T-Hawk. Must be pretty detailed plans you are working from for them to have all the panels etc on them.

How are you doing the heavy bolter mounts, using Razorback turrets? And you going to use a Shadowsword barrel for the turbolaser?

@ Korvydae - Thanks - unfortunately with a small 'Watcher in the Dark' on the way i cant aafford to sopend money on bits..... so the Bolters and barrel will be made from scratch as the plans include them - Luckily it will give my sculpting skills a challenge ;)

@Shadow - Thank you - (i have to admit there has been some filing as well! lol!) so far its taken me about 4 weeks, taking into account that there are days that i dont work on it at all.

Update: last night added final detail to the hatch on the back (bottom) of the cockpit as well as some detailing on the cockpit base - deciding if i should do landing gear or not! Also started on the main Turbine - and i can see LOTS of heart ache theer - may have to see if i can find the appropriate pipe sizes for that! as trying to cut a half circle from 3mm thick plasticard is tricky to say the least!
